Special presentations

Derek and Brenda Annable were presented with a special piece of crystal ware to mark their joint lifetime dedication to motorsport and more recently Drag Racing. Derek has been in motor racing for 55 years and is now retiring from all forms of motorsport. Brenda has of course supported him every step (1/4-mile) of the way! We presented Brenda with flowers and Derek with a framed picture of himself and other WB cars, kindly provided by Bill Sly of Badboysimagin. They have just initiated a new trophy for couples who do a lot to benefit Drag Racing and embody the team spirit of the Wild Bunch, and this will be a fitting legacy to their dedication and commitment. We will miss them greatly.

Dick Sharp & Bunt Willcox were presented with a framed picture each of a montage of the "Dorset Horn", to commemorate Dorset Horn Mark 006, which was sadly totalled in the crash. We wanted to recognise the fact of how great the car was Personal Best E.T.s (after 30 years since the first race car) "Best Engineered" and "Best Altered" on many occasions, 2002&3 Wild Bunch Best Altered, and they are the current holders of the "Don Garlits" shield.
Fastest MPH

Chevone Charman-Osborne and Tara Nicholas, WB 44, "Destinys Angel"
Chevy ran a 143.31 mph at the Hot Rod Drags (The winner has to back up the speed during the year by 5%, which she did with a 142.86 mph, also at the Hot Rod Drags - in fact Chevy ran all four passes over 140 mph at that event). Tara has also run over 140 mph, 141.96 mph, at the Nostalgia Nationals, where her efforts ensured the team qualified to run at the Hot Rod Drags, as one of the 10 quickest Wild Bunch cars from the Nostalgias, so very much a team effort on this, with their well-maintained car and professional appearance.
Quickest E.T.

Dennis Hawkins, WB 40, "The Wicked Lady"
Dennis ran a 9.231 (Personal Best E.T.) on his first qualifying pass at the Sportsman Finals at Santa Pod in September. He had Dialled in at 9.84, so really surprised himself with such a strong run, after a recent engine rebuild. (The winner has to back up the time during the year by 5%, which Dennis did with a 9.316 in his second qualifier at the same event!).
Big Bang Trophy

Clayton Round, WB 50, Rebel Racing Slingshot
Clayton had been running the slingshot with great success, gradually lowering the E.T.s to the low 10s and putting in a couple of 10.5s at the Nostalgia Nationals in June, when he unfortunately threw a rod out the block, plus all the oil, causing damage to the block and comprehensive damage to the engine. He came back strong with a new engine and injection system, and ran a 9.761 straight off the trailer at York in August!
Best Newcomer

Sid Slattery, WB 147, "Destiny"
Sid is a very keen, enthusiastic new driver and fielded his beautifully turned out slingshot "Destiny". He attended 3 events this year, his rookie season, and has gradually started to iron out the teething problems of a new car. He ran a Personal Best E.T. of 12.158 seconds at York, after pulling a huge wheelie! He shows promise for next season, and is sportsmanlike and friendly to boot. Welcome to the Wild Bunch Sid!
Best Slingshot

Chris Hartnell, WB 3, "Backdraft"
Chris slingshot is always well turned out and conforms strictly to all the up-to-date specs. He is constantly trying to improve the performance, and first topped the 140 mph mark this year. The car pulls regular wheelies on launch, and has run mid to low 9s all season long, winning several "Best Slingshot" Spot Prizes.
Best Altered

Dick Sharp & Bunt Willcox, WB 86, "Dorset Horn"
What can we say about this car? It was a really beautiful, well-turned out feat of engineering and always clean and well-presented. It ran consistent mid 9s at over 140 mph all season, and the team were lowering the E.T.s further all the time and developing the cars potential. The team won several "Best Altered" and "Best Engineered" Spot Prizes during the season.
Best Radical/Rear-engine dragster

Dennis Hawkins, WB 40, "The Wicked Lady"
Dennis has really improved on his performance this year, especially towards the end of the season. The car is always well maintained and tidy and runs consistent low 9s at over 140 mph, winning a couple of "Fastest MPH/Best E.T." Spot Prizes, as well as several "Best Radical/Dragster" Spot Prizes.
Best Turned Out

Team "Cunning Plan", WB 2
The team are very smart in their new pink and green team shirts. They have made a real effort this season to improve the car and its appearance with a brand new smart paint job. The team have maintained a strong presence at the racetrack and have altogether raced at 9 events this season, at all three tracks. Tony and Dave finished in 4th place in the Wild Bunch Series this season, and won many Spot Prizes. They have shown professionalism and a positive attitude to improving performance whenever they race.
Best Achiever

Gareth Kent, WB 21, "Hot Dog"
Gareth has worked hard to run a well-presented, well-maintained car and the whole team look professional with their uniforms. In this, his first full season, he had succeeded in winning his first MSA event by the middle of May, and went on to win another one at Santa Pod. He has participated in 7 events this year and won Spot Prizes at several of them. He succeeded in finishing in 2nd place in the Wild Bunch Series, despite doing one less event than everyone else in the Top 10. He also finished in 3rd place in the Real Steel Series. Both are great achievements for this young driver who has also just become a Dad!
Perseverance Award

Dr Tony Wynne-Jones, WB 29, "Welsh Raider II"
Tony faced problems all during the season but bounced back time after time, still trying and smiling! No matter how many times he had the bonnet off the Corvette roadster to fix a problem, it never suffered a scratch!! Perseverance typifies his attitude, and he takes any breakages in his stride, even managing to be matter-of-fact about his engine seizing mid-run at 100 mph at the Allstars, suffering rod and crank damage!! He rebuilt the engine and kept trying and tuning until he achieved his Personal Best E.T., an 11.824 at the York August event. He still managed to participate in a total of 8 events, despite the problems and finished 8th in the Wild Bunch Series, two higher places than 2002, a great achievement, overcoming breakages and getting performance out of his beautifully turned-out car, which won several "Best Radical" Spot Prizes.
Daddy Cool (Sags) Personal Achievement

Martin Holgate, WB 43, "Paranoia"
Martin is an easy-going racer who fits his racing in with many family commitments, as he helps partner Janice look after her foster kids and is always keen for them to join in up at the track. He is still trying to chase that elusive 8-second pass, and at the Nostalgia Nationals suffered a blow with the timing chain letting go, causing damage to the engine. He had qualified as one of the Quickest 10 at the event, to be invited to the Hot Rod Drags, and really worked hard to repair the car and get it running for that event, all the while keeping up his strong family commitments, supporting Janice through some difficult times in August. The rebuilding of the engine and running of the altered at the Hot Rod Drags was a testament to his persevering attitude. Unfortunately, there was more engine damage at this event, but he was, as ever, philosophical.
C & C Sportsperson

Dr Tony Wynne-Jones, WB 29, "Welsh Raider II"
He has been a great behind-the-scenes sportsman, and is always pleasant towards everyone. He maintains fair play and sportsmanlike conduct to fellow racers, and has helped many other racers this year when they have had breakages, as he always makes himself available to lend a hand. He travelled to both York and Santa Pod, and despite his own bad luck with tyre deflation and other breakages and having to work hard on his own car, he is always eager to help everyone else to keep on racing. He shows dedication and commitment to the Wild Bunch and Drag Racing in general.
Derek & Brenda Annable trophy

Roy and Angi Wilding
This is a brand new award initiated by Derek and Brenda to be awarded to a couple or partnership who are committed to Drag Racing. It can go to various different types of people, from racers, to commentators, to photographers, to crewmembers, to marshals and officials, to spectators and fans, to Wild Bunch associate members, to parent/child partnerships, or any pair who demonstrate the family spirit of the Wild Bunch. Derek and Brenda chose the first recipients, and they will in turn chose the following recipients, and so on.
DON GARLITS SPIRIT OF DRAG RACING SHIELD

Tony Smith and Dave Williams, Team "Cunning Plan"
This years winners display all the qualities of the Don Garlits Spirit of Drag Racing ideal. The driver has been an active member of the Wild Bunch for 8 years, and has always shown himself to be dedicated to the Wild Bunch and the promotion of drag racing. Though not having much in the way of funding, the team strive to present a well-maintained car, and constantly look to improve performance, one step at a time, within a budget. This season saw them re-vamping the paintwork and tidying up the whole car and team appearance. They are true sportsman and always demonstrate fair play to other racers. They had a few minor breakages during the season, but showed their ability to persevere throughout, get the car fixed, and carry on racing; at the same time still supporting the rest of the Bunch, and lending a helping hand wherever they could. They are committed to developing the full potential of the car, and ran several Personal Best E.T.s this season, reaching the goal of an 11-second pass, and doing some cracking burnouts along the way! The car and team have won the "Best Appearing Team" award this year, showing the presentation that has gone into the running of the altered, which is also reflected in the smart new teamwear. They have a great team spirit and the driver is given a lot of support by his wife and crew chief (also a co-driver at times) who are both vital members of the team. They travelled some distance to both events at York, as well as Santa Pod, and were keen to put on a good showing, always being good ambassadors for the sport and indeed the Wild Bunch, and befriending new Wild Bunch members and showing them the ropes. They have a great enthusiasm and love of drag racing, and during the off-season the driver runs a "guess who" competition on the team website. They also help out behind-the-scenes, and have assisted with marshalling and track work weekends. The team have competed in a total of 9 events this year, both MSA and RWYBs, and achieved success, together finishing in the Top 4 of the Wild Bunch, Real Steel and Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series. They are always friendly and ready in the pits with a laugh and a joke and are much-liked, well-respected members of the Wild Bunch!!
