Saturday This was a qualifying day with 3 rounds available. All 8 cars ran in the 1st round with Paul Croston setting an early benchmark with a 13.077 on a 13.00 Dial-in. After the run, he experienced a bit of top-end wobbliness and found that a crack had appeared on part of his front axle, so he was out for the rest of the day, knowing he had qualified (the crew obligingly put up an explanatory sign, next to their new mascot, a worryingly lifelike 'guy' with a "Team B-Sting" shirt on and a little poem about how they hoped to win!! [You're bound to see pictures soon in magazines and on the web!]). [The team later took the axle to Roy Wilding's machine shop, who promptly sorted out the problem!!] Second closest was Chris Hartnell with a wheelying-slightly-left-turning 9.482 on a 9.35 Dial-in. Ed Yates again ran under his Dial-in with a strong Personal Best E.T. of 10.371 on a 10.50 Dial-in! Team member Andy Gosling also broke out with a 13.517 on a 13.70 Dial-in! Andrew Willcox was making Observed runs in Vince Andrews' "Just Another Toy" red and flamed Funny Car. In the 2nd round of qualifying, 7 cars ran and Andy Gosling set a great qualifying mark with a 13.407 on a 13.40 Dial-in, just 7 thousandths off! He also ran 100.90 mph, the FIRST TON ever in the "Nutcracker" slingshot! The team have been trying to do this for a few years!! (Well done, Andy!) Newcomer Tom Coe, back in his car after lending it to his Dad at Super Series 1, set a Personal Best E.T. of 11.932 on an 11.95 Dial-in (quicker than his Dad's Personal Best of 11.941). Chris Hartnell ran a 9.506 @ 133.93 mph (taking "Fastest MPH" Spot Prize again with the exact same speed as at Super Series 1!). The 3rd round of qualifying saw 6 cars running with Chris running a 9.567 and setting "Best Reaction" of the weekend with a .533 time. Due to a mix up with an upside down chalkboard, Tom did not get his correct Dial-in (Tower saw 16.11 instead of 11.91 (!), which made it look like he was a great 4 seconds under his Dial-in! Still, it didn't affect his qualifying place, but did cause him and Andy some confusion on the line!). [The scoreboards had not been working correctly also, so Dial-ins and MPH were not coming up regularly at the top end]. Colin Aldred, once again running in the Pro E.T. class as well, came out of nowhere and surprised everyone with a brilliant 10.683 on a 10.68 Dial-in (just 3 thousandths off to pip Gos for the #1 qualifying slot!). Andrew Willcox ran a steady 15.427 pass in the Funny Car, but did not yet get his license signed, so was unable to take part in eliminations on Sunday, although he did put in another Observed run at the end of the day. Sunday The first round was the Quarter-Finals, and Colin Aldred had a Bye-run, but still put in a great 10.646 on a 10.64 Dial-in (.006 off to take "Closest to Dial-in" Spot Prize). Andy ran a 13.539 on a 13.40 beating Darryl, who narrowly broke out with a 12.769 on a 12.81 Dial-in. The race between Chris and Ed was once again very close (as it had been in SS1); Chris ran a 9.338 on a 9.45 Dial-in, breaking out by .112 and Ed ran a Personal Best E.T. of 10.254 on a 10.37, breaking out by .116 and taking the "Closest Runner-up" Spot Prize! Tom ran a 12.025, beating Paul, who didn't mind as he had run his Personal Best E.T. of 12.580 on a 13.00 Dial-in! (Again an explanatory note from the crew for people wondering why they had the day off!). Semi-Finals Two tough races made up the Semi-Finals, with Chris red-lighting in his attempt to get a good reaction against Colin, who had been running so well. (This was only the 2nd red light in Chris' 6 years of racing! And, yes, he has been trying! The "B-Sting" trend has been catching on as Chris soon put up an explanatory note of his own about liking the colour red!). Colin ran an excellent 10.558 on a 10.61 Dial-in, setting his Personal Best E.T. (in Wild Bunch). In the other Semi, Andy ran a 14.256 on a 13.40 Dial-in, while Tom ran a 12.119 on an 11.92 Dial-in to take the win. Finals The finals saw Colin Aldred breaking out with a 10.561 on a 10.60 Dial-in, with young newcomer Tom taking the win with a 12.008 on an 11.92 Dial-in. Many congratulations to him and Welcome to the Wild Bunch to him and his Dad, who are both enjoying their racing! Another good weekend of racing at a very busy Super Series 2. Once again thanks to all the hard-working marshals and officials who enabled the event to be completed ahead of time, with all eliminations held and some good close exciting racing again!! See you at the Test n'Tune in June!! |
