The weather was very poor on Saturday and the event was almost rained off. Only about an hour's worth of street-treaded tyred cars ran, but the rain returned mid-afternoon and no slick-tyred vehicles were able to make runs. Sunday started off wet but dried out a bit and racing started about noon. By about 2:00ish the track had been sprayed ready for slick-tyred vehicles and racing then carried on until a late rain shower at quarter to five. | |
WB 40 | Dennis Hawkins had brought the "Wicked Lady" dragster and sat out the rain on Saturday. Unfortunately the car suffered from a broken starter motor and Dennis had to pack up and leave early Sunday. |
WB 243 | Derek Annable returned in the re-named "Brenda's Life Force" Top Methanol dragster, and was raring to go when the track was ready on Sunday, with the support of Martyn Hannis and Dougie Bond as crew. Derek Dialled in blind at 8.00 seconds and followed the Supercharged Outlaws down the pairing lanes. He performed a great 3-point turn pulling round into the box, and put in a good burnout and launched into the run. The engine started to smoke after half track, but Derek ran a good 8.643 @ 166.05 mph. Sadly though, 3 rods exited the engine at the end of the run, making a window right through the block, curtailing Derek's fun for the day. The team were very philosophical about the breakage, however, and Derek hopes to be back for the Power Nationals in June!! Good luck to the whole team!! |
Being the only driver running on Sunday, Derek took home ALL the Spot Prizes for the weekend: with a "Best Reaction" of .803, a "Quickest E.T." of 8.643, which was the "Closest to Dial-in" at .643 off, and in addition the car was "Best Rear-engine dragster"! After having had the breakage, Derek was very pleased to receive all these trophies, and this cheered him up to look forward to the next event!
We will have to wait until the Nostalgia Nationals at the end of June to see how Derek fares amongst the other results, so it will be quite a wait! And we have the UK Open Nationals May Bank Holiday weekend at York, and the Power Nationals in mid June before then, so looking forward to all those events!! |
