Saturday & Sunday were qualifying days with 4 qualifying rounds scheduled for Saturday. In the first two rounds of qualifying, 13 and 11 drivers took part, with 12 taking part in the third qualifier. But time ran out for our 4th qualifier, which took place on the Sunday, along with the 5th qualifier, where 13 cars ran in each session. | |
WB 1 | Tony Smith was running in “The Cunning Plan” Minivan altered. He began with a Dial-in of 11.52 and ran an 11.682 @ 112.07 mph for his opening bid. He then changed Dial to an 11.65 and ran an improved 11.504. He reduced the Dial to an 11.48 for the third qualifier, and ran an 11.808, keeping the same Dial for the fourth round, he recorded a great 11.466 @ 112.90 mph. For the fifth round, he modified the Dial slightly to an 11.44 and ran another good 11.476 @ 113.12 mph, and qualified in 3rd place overall. |
WB 3 | Mike Cresswell Dialled in at 11.25 in the “Living the Dream” slingshot, for his first qualifying run and put in a strong 11.007 @ 119.13 mph, near his best speed and a good run for the start of the day. He reduced the Dial-in to 11.00 even for the second qualifier, but unfortunately broke off the launch. On returning to the pits, he discovered he had bent one half shaft, and sheared off the other!! The car had been running really well, so it was unfortunate that Mike was then sidelined for the rest of the event. Hope he can get it fixed and be back out for the Hot Rod Drags! |
WB 6 | ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was hoping for some more 8-second passes in the “Backdraft” slingshot, and Dialled in at 8.80 for the first round, and ran an 8.956 @ 149.14 mph, so was pretty pleased with the first run of the weekend. He kept the Dial-in for the second round, but lit the tyres off the launch and ran a 9.118 @ 148.33 mph. He kept the same Dial-in again for the third round, and lit the tyres again, recording a 9.487 @ 146 mph. He increased the Dial slightly for the fourth round to an 8.82 and put in an 8.971 @ a new Personal Best Speed of 151.49 mph. He then increased the Dial to an 8.88 and broke out with a strong wheels-up 8.782 @ 150.63 mph, his quickest run at Shakey. He qualified in 7th place overall. |
WB 29 | Tony Wynne-Jones’ was back in MSA competition with his beautiful “Welsh Raider 2”, and he put in an opening qualifying pass of 17.058 on an 11.25 Dial-in, having some misfiring problems. He worked on the car during the second and third qualifiers, and then came back out for the fourth, dialling in 12.97 and running a much improved 12.425 @ 108.99 mph. He then recorded a 13.281 on a 12.30 Dial-in for the last session, and qualified in 12th place overall, after getting rid of some of the teething troubles. |
WB 34 | Alec Coe was back in his and Kev's “Shy Talker” blown slingshot and their ambition for the weekend was to run over 160 mph, and deeper into the 8's. They dialled in at 8.70 for the first qualifier, but unfortunately had a problem. Alec came back out strongly in the second qualifier, keeping the same Dial, and running a new Personal Best E.T. of 8.528 @ 164.49 mph!! Already achieving two big goals for the weekend! The team amended the Dial to 8.40 for the third round, and ran another good pass of 8.895 @ 159.08 mph. They had another problem in the fourth qualifier but again came back strong with an 8.604 @ 163 mph on the 8.40 Dial-in. Alec qualified 11th overall and the team were really chuffed with the car's performance. |
WB 38 | Helen Smythe was raring to go in the hotseat of the Team Twisted “Hell's Belle” altered. She dialled in at 10.15 for the first qualifier but did not record a time on the board. She kept the same Dial for Round 2 and posted a 10.943 @ 118.41 mph. She adjusted the Dial-in to 10.25 for the third qualifier and put in a great 10.295 @ 124.04 mph. She then increased the Dial slightly to 10.29, and ran a strong 10.087 @ 130.25 mph in the fourth qualifier. For the fifth round, she reduced the Dial to 10.08 and ran a good 10.147 @ 130.62 mph, and qualified in 5th place overall. |
WB 40 | Darren Law had brought the beautiful sparkly “Wicked Lady” Rear-engined dragster to the track Friday and got his pit all set up. On Saturday he went to his nephew's wedding whilst the team got the car scrutineered and all ready for the Sunday qualifying. Darren posted a 9.75 Dial-in for the 4th round, and unfortunately had transbrake problems which sent him off the line early so he did not record a time. He kept the same Dial for the fifth round, and recorded a 13.137 @ 104.32 mph, with a slight problem. But he had still safely qualified for the show on Monday! |
WB 44 | Sarah Howells was running in Bernie Nicholas’ “Destiny's Angel” altered, and hoping to maintain her lead in the Ultimate Power Series. She Dialled in at 9.63 for the first round and ran an oh-so-close 9.625 @ 141.79 mph. She reduced the Dial for the second qualifier to a 9.55 and ran a 9.721 @ 142.01 mph. She then modified the Dial to a 9.60 and put in a brilliant 9.610 @ 141.82 mph in the third qualifier to finish the day on top. There was a slight problem with the Dial-in on the fourth round, and Sarah posted another good 9.658 @ 143.34 mph. She kept the same Dial-in for the last round, and recorded another strong 9.560 @ 144.31 mph. Sarah emerged Number 1 qualifier, and this put her in good shape for the eliminations, as she earnt a Bye in the first round. The team were also awarded the “Best Altered” for the lovely well-maintained car, and it's strong performance. |
WB 54 | Phil Sweeney was in his first ever MSA event in the “Antisocial” slingshot. He dialled in at 13.40 for the first round and surprised himself with a 13.271 @ 98.89 mph, very near a PB. He then changed the Dial to 13.25 for the second qualifier and recorded a new Personal Best E.T. of 13.059 @ 100.27 mph, his first time over the ton! He lowered the Dial to a 13.05 for the next round, and posted a 13.191 @ 99.13 mph. He kept the same Dial for the fourth and fifth rounds and ran a 13.272, and a 13.168 @ 100.38 mph, a new Personal Best Speed. Phil qualified in 6th place overall, so was quite pleased with that. |
WB 57 | Neil Ward was back in the “Andromeda” slingshot. He pulled a deep red on his first qualifier and did not record a time. He then dialled in at 9.50 for the second qualifier and ran a 9.747 @ 133.76 mph. He kept the Dial for the third round and posted a 9.692 @ 135.20 mph. For the next day, Neil and the crew had decided it was time to turn on the NOS!! They dialled in at 9.00 and didn’t really have any idea how well it would go. Neil recorded a new Personal Best E.T. of 9.320 @ 145.45 mph, also a new Personal Best Speed and his first trip into the 140's. He kept the same dial again for the fifth round and recorded another PB of 9.186 @ 145.19 mph, and qualified in 9th place overall, but the team were thrilled with how well the gas worked! |
WB 67 | saw the welcome return to MSA competition of Darryl Howells in the D.A.S.H. Racing “Chemical Reaction” slingshot, after one successful Run-What-You-Brung event with the newly built engine. He dialled in at 11.00 even for his opening shot of 11.253 @ 132.01 mph, a new Personal Best Speed. He then lowered the Dial to 10.90 and ran a great new Personal Best E.T. of 10.734 @ 133.42 mph, another new PB speed. Darryl then lowered the dial to 10.50 and ran an off-pace 11.280. He stuck with the Dial for the next round and recorded another new PB of 10.702. He slightly increased the Dial to 10.60 for the last qualifier, but blasted this out the window with a great new PB of 10.187 @ 136.60 mph, yet another PB for speed. Fair play, Darryl! He qualified in 10th place and was really pleased with the car's performance. |
WB 76 | Steve Field was hoping for some more good runs in “The Black Pig” altered. He and Lesley dialled in at 10.05 for the first qualifier, and posted a great 10.090 @ 140.80 mph, to take the #1 spot after the first round. He kept the Dial for Round 2 and recorded a 10.133 on this pass. In fact he stuck with the same Dial all through qualifying and carded a great 9.896 in the third round and a 10.190 in the fourth, before recording a brilliant new Personal Best E.T. and Speed of 9.698 @ 141.42 mph! Steve qualified in 4th place overall. |
WB 100 | saw Roy Wilding back in the “Chariot of Fire” altered, after a complete engine build, after the last one was sadly destroyed at the Mini Nationals in July. Roy started off with a slow checkout pass in the first round of qualifying, and had to miss the second with an oil pump pickup problem. He was back for the third, where he dialled in at 12.00 and ran a 12.501 @ 111.85 mph, to fully open his qualifying account. He kept the same Dial for the fourth round and ran an improved 11.951. He then dialled in at 11.80 and ran an 11.964 @ 116.43 mph, and qualified in 8th place overall, and was just pleased to be back out racing. |
WB 147 | was the first ever MSA event for Sid Slattery in his beautiful “Destiny” slingshot. He dialled in at 11.10 for the first round, but had to shutdown with a minor oil leak after the burnout. He joined back in at the third qualifier and dialled in at 11.30 and ran a great 11.321 @ 111.32 mph. He kept the Dial for the fourth and fifth rounds and recorded an 11.998 @ 117.20 mph in the fourth and a great 11.195 @ 119.52 mph in the fifth. Sid qualified in 2nd place overall on only his first ever qualifying sessions, so fair play, Sid! |
WB 464 | Tracey Froome and the team had brought the “Sunburst” Radical Funny Car, hoping they had cured the teething troubles from the last event. They spent much of the day Saturday in the pits ironing out some problems, and joined in at the third qualifier, posting a 9.75 Dial-in and running a troubled 14.780 @ 80.24 mph. Unfortunately, after this the team diagnosed some starter motor and flywheel problems, and could not fix them at the track, so were very sadly sidelined for the rest of the event. Hope they can be back out at the Hot Rod Drags! Good luck to them all! |
Monday (Race Day)
15 Wild Bunch cars had qualified for race day and there were due to be 7 good races and a Bye in the first round, and we were called down to the pairings lanes shortly after 11am. Sadly, Darryl and Sarah Howells had to leave the track that morning, due to a family emergency, so there was a big hole in the Bunch, and we really missed having them there and our thoughts were very much with them. Fortunately things improved and they were back later in the day and supported all the rest of the Bunch, cheering everyone else on!
Round 1 This round should have seen 7 races and Sarah's bye, but due to the unfortunate circumstances, and 3 racers having broken, we only had 3 pairs in the round. Sid had unfortunately found some pieces of cam followers when he warmed the “Destiny” up in the morning, so he had to miss his first ever round of competition. Hope he can be fixed soon, and be back out for the Hot Rod Drags! Tony Smith had been due to face Darryl in his pairing, and he dialled in at 11.44 and ran an 11.561 @ 111.72 mph on his solo run. Tony Wynne-Jones was matched with Helen Smythe and it was a real close race. Tony dialled in at 12.30 and ran a 12.366 @ 100.41 mph to Helen's 10.127 on her 10.08 Dial. Helen took the win by .082, but there was consolation for Tony when he won the “Best Radical/Dragster” Spot Prize, as well as the toolbox prize from the Mad R's team for the Closest Runner-up in the first round! Chris Hartnell had been due to race Tracey Froome, but as Tracey had broken, Chris had a single, and dialled in at 8.74 and ran a 9.360 @ 146.97 mph. Darren Law faced newcomer Phil Sweeney, and Darren had further problems recording a 12.435 on a 9.75 Dial-in, handing the win to Phil who ran a 13.327 on a 13.12 Dial to advance to the next round. Neil Ward had been paired with Sid who had also unfortunately broken, and Neil made further progress with the NOS, dialling in at 8.80 and running another PB at 9.141 @ 146.24 mph, another PB for speed. Steve Field and Alec Coe was going to be a great matchup, until Steve suffered some wheel problems on the burnout and was forced to push back.. Alec had dialled in at 8.40 again and ran another strong 8.699 @ a new Personal Best Speed of 165.11 mph! And Roy Wilding also took a solo pass, as his opponent was due to have been Mike Cresswell. Roy ran an 11.983 on an 11.94 Dial-in which showed promise for the next round. Quarter-Finals The first pairing saw Roy paired with Alec. Unfortunately Alec lost fire after the burnout, and had to be pushed back, leaving Roy to run a single. No time was recorded for Roy on this run, and he advanced to the Semis. Alec and Kev's beautiful slingshot was awarded the “Best Engineered” Spot Prize by the scrutineer, so they were very pleased with that, and the car's strong runs over the weekend. Helen also had a solo, as she would have faced Sarah in this round. Helen dialled in at 10.08 and ran a 10.202 @ 129.47 mph. The next race saw a classic matchup of Tony Smith against Chris Hartnell. Tony dialled in at 11.44 again, and ran a similar pass to the first round, an 11.569 @ 111.39 mph. Chris had posted an 8.95 Dial and recorded a 9.045 @ 149.13 mph, with a slight reaction advantage to take the win, his first competition round win for over a year! Neil Ward and Phil Sweeney rounded off the quarter-finals, with Neil posting an 8.95 Dial-in and running yet another Personal Best E.T. of 9.057 @ 145.65 mph, his fourth PB in a row! In the other lane, Phil had dialled in at 13.12 and ran a 13.418, but took the victory by virtue of a good reaction time! Semi-Finals The first semi-final saw Roy taking on Phil. Roy dialled in at 11.95, and ran his best pass of the weekend, a breakout 11.915. This meant that Phil took the win with a 13.281 on a 13.15 Dial-in. In the other Semi-final, Crazy Chris was due to race Helen, but sadly Helen could not fire-up in the pairings lanes. The team later diagnosed a problem with the starter motor, so many commiserations to them! Chris again dialled in at 8.95 and ran a strong wheels-up 8.928 @ 148.57 mph to reach the Final. Roy finished 3rd for the event and Helen took 4th place. This was Roy's first Top 4 placing with the new altered, so welcome back, Roy!! Final The final saw newcomer Phil matched with ‘Crazy’ Chris, now in his second decade of racing. This was a great race, and Chris dialled in at 8.95 and again brokeout, with a nice wheels-up 8.916 @ 145 mph. Phil had the startline advantage with a Wild Bunch “Best Reaction” of .101, to Chris’ .205, and Phil went on to record a Perfect 13.180 E.T. on his 13.18 Dial-in! Pretty impossible to beat, and he took the eurodragster £50 award for a Perfect Dial at the event! (As well as the Wild Bunch “Closest to Dial-in” Spot Prize!). This was Phil's first MSA competition win in his first ever MSA event! Great result! The team also took home the “Best Slingshot” Spot Prize for their great showing in their first competition! Many congratulations to Phil and the team! Another great weekend for the Bunch, where we enjoyed more good weather and a well-prepped track, with lots of other activities taking place as well as the great racing. Really good to see the stands so full on Sunday! Congratulations to Phil on his first win, and to all the teams for their performances and professional appearances and PB's in many cases. All the Top 5 qualifiers were within 5 hundredths of their Dial-ins, and the Top 11 were nearly within two tenths! And for the statistically minded amongst us, here are a few facts....out of 73 timed runs, we had 18 runs in the 11-second range, 11 in the 10-second range, 17 in the 9-second range and 9 in the 8-second range. And as for speeds, we had 9 runs in the 130 mph range, 18 in the 140 mph range, 3 in the 150 mph range and 3 in the 160 mph range! We would like to say thanks to all the hardworking marshals, officials, fire crews, promoters and organisers for a great event and all their efforts over the weekend. Many congratulations to Sarah Howells, who has won the Ultimate Power Series for Wild Bunch. And to Tony Smith for second place! Tony still leads both the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series, with one round left in Wild Bunch and two in Real Steel. We are now really looking forward to the “Hot Rod Drags” at Shakey on 17th & 18th September, the final round of the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series, which is currently lead by Chris Hartnell, with Joe Stevens in second place. This should be another great event with a big field of Wild Bunch, and we are planning to have group photos taken to celebrate our 10th Anniversary season! Can’t wait! |
