Saturday
The day started off cool and overcast, and remained dry all day, despite a huge dark cloud hovering at one point. Luckily, this never dropped its contents, and many drivers got in 3 or more test runs.

Sunday (Series Points Day)
Sunday's weather started off damp, which was unexpected. This delayed the start of racing, which got underway briefly around noon, but a few more sprinkles again delayed the proceedings. We waited around for the track to dry, and eventually got the first round in around 2:30pm, with the second round following after 4pm.
WB 1 was the first drive of the year for Dave Williams in The Cunning Plan minivan altered. Tony had planned to drive, but due to extra officiating commitments, he passed the mantle on to Dave, who made several passes in the 11.7s on the Saturday. Dave dialled in at 11.72 for the rounds on Sunday, and ran an 11.690 and an 11.765, both at 109 mph, to finish in 2nd place for the weekend. A great start to the campaign to hold on to WB 1! To top the weekend off, Dave received the Best Burnout Spot Prize, awarded by the commentators, for his smoky efforts!
WB 3 Darryl Howells was back out in the DASH Racing Chemical Reaction slingshot, hoping to get a handle on the new injection system. He made 3 runs Saturday of 11.235 @ 119.43 mph, 11.071 @ 119.15 mph, and another 11.2. The team dialled in at 10.90 for Sunday, and Darryl posted an 11.519 @ 115.34 mph in the first round. He decided to opt for some more testing and tuning for the rest of the afternoon, so did not take part in the second round. Darryl was awarded the Driver's Choice Spot Prize, as voted for by the Wild Bunch drivers attending the event. A popular win!
WB 4 saw the second WB event of the season for Darren Law in The Wicked Lady rear-engined dragster. The team had just done some rebuilding of parts since the last event, and finished this off on the Friday night at the track. Darren made 3 passes on Saturday, including a 9.7 and had a problem with the transbrake on a couple of the runs. The team dialled in at 9.75 for Sunday's rounds, and thought they had blown it with a 9.703 at 141.36 mph in the first round! (Well, this was a full .047 off the Dial, and meant Darren was in 4th place after the round!). Darren was closer on the second run and posted a 9.723 @ 139.25 mph, and with this took the event win by just one thousandth of a second over the combination of the 2 runs! Well done to Darren and the whole team, who also won the Best Dragster/Radical Spot Prize for the event! Could it be they are shaping up to challenge Tony and Dave?!!
WB 6 ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was looking forward to more wheelies in the Backdraft slingshot, and started off well on the Saturday with a nice wheelie, and a season's best 9.225 @ 141.02 mph. His second run produced another great wheelie, but he had to back off slightly, to a 9.486 @ 140.29 mph. The slingshot suffered some damage on the run, and Chris went back to Roy Wilding's to do some welding. (Many thanks, Roy!). He reassembled the front axle in the morning, but other damage prevented him from running the car on the Sunday. Best of luck fixing it soon, Chris! There was some consolation, in that the commentators awarded Chris the Best Slingshot Spot Prize for his great wheelies!
WB 17 saw the second event of the year for Scottie Durrant and Gina Rumble's Austin Ruby- bodied Tiki Munki Pinto-powered altered. Scottie made a total of 5 passes on the Saturday, including Personal Bests with the new body of 14.643 @ 85.27 mph, 14.320 @ 87.65 mph and 14.255 @ 86.89 mph. He followed these with a 14.311 and a 14.866, both at 86 mph. Scottie dialled in at 14.35 for the rounds on Sunday, and was very pleased with a 14.364 at another new PB speed of 87.78 mph in the first round. In the second round, he ran another PB of 14.204, and finished in 3rd place overall, going one better than one of the GAS racing team's events in 2007. And some nice wheels-up launches to boot!
WB 25 Terry Clifford was running his gold Ratcatcher Resurrection slingshot. He ran 3 very consistent passes on the Saturday, of 10.854, 10.898 and another 10.8 second pass. He dialled in at 10.83 for the rounds on the Sunday, and immediately went one better with a 10.715 @ 120.09 mph in the first round! He then posted runs of 10.898 in the second round, exactly duplicating his second run on the Saturday! Terry finished in 4th place overall and was pleased with the car's performance, but promised there would be more to come at the next event!
WB 43 Martin Holgate was in his first Wild Bunch outing of the year in his Paranoia altered. (Original builder Brian Thomas was at the track on the Sunday and was interested in all the changes Martin had made over the years.) Martin had high hopes for running some numbers, and was just pleased to be back out on the track! He started off with a checkout 10-second pass on the Saturday. Later that day, he went out for another run, and unfortunately a rod let go, and punched a hole in the top of the block! Martin was a-ok, but there looked to be a lot of damage in the engine. (But amazingly, just 3 days after, Martin reported that there was not as much damage as feared, the head was okay, and the block repaired. Apparently the car has been fired up already, and the team are raring to go for the Pod in a couple of weeks’ time! Fair play to them all!).
WB 44 saw the fourth event of the year for Dave Rowlands in the Destiny's Angel altered, hoping to build on his good runs at the last event. Dave made a few 9-second passes on the Saturday, and dialled in at 9.80 for the rounds on Sunday. He went straight out in the first round and ran a great 9.805 @ 141.36 mph, just five thousandths off his Dial, and winning the Closest to Dial-in for the day. Dave went out for the second round and was fired up, when a delay meant he had to shut down. Unfortunately, the car would not fire again, and sadly the team had to tow back to the pits. This was such a shame, as Dave could have been on for his first Wild Bunch win! Better luck next time, Dave!
WB 57 saw the first appearance of the season of Neil Ward and team, with the Andromeda slingshot. The start to their season had been delayed with late arrival of parts, which has affected many racers in the UK. They were keen to get back to their 8-second form. Neil started with a couple of 10-second checkout passes on the Saturday, and the team began to tune the car. They dialled in at 9.10 for the Sunday, having diagnosed some problems. Neil started off with a 9.424 @ 138.40 mph in the first round, with a Wild Bunch Best Reaction of .033! Some more tuning produced a much-improved 9.014 @ 146.99 mph in the second round and Neil finished in 6th place overall. Later in the day, Neil ran another test pass of 9.008, so will have to wait for those 8's at another event!
WB 76 Steve Field was in his second Wild Bunch appearance of the season in The Black Pig altered. He made a few variable passes in the 10's on the Saturday, and Lesley dialled him in at 10.30 for Sunday. Steve ran a strong 10.043 @ 128.58 mph in the first round, followed by a 10.770, also at 128 mph in the second, and finished in 7th place overall. There was a photo on the net of Steve with the wheels up, so the car was charging hard!
WB 78 was newcomer Keith Crampton with the Soultown Shaker slingshot, back at Shakey after his MSA debut the month before. Keith had the car fired up in the pits on the Saturday, and thought that a half shaft had gone. After further investigation, the team realised there was damage to the diff, so were unable to take part in the event, such a shame! We hope Keith can fix this and be back out soon!
WB 81 saw the first appearance for 2008 of Steve ‘Jacko’ Taylor in his Claustrophobic Rear-engined dragster. Steve spent the day Saturday sorting out some last-minute gremlins, and had the car all ready to go for Sunday, when he discovered that some other little gremlins (in the form of mice) had been at work on his race wear! Unfortunately, this meant he could not run the car! Better luck next time, Jacko, we hope to see you back out soon.
WB 95 saw Mark Richardson in his fourth event of the year with the Pony Express altered. Mark made several runs on the Saturday, and dialled in at 9.60 for Sunday. He ran a 9.754 @ 131.26 mph in the first round, and posted a 9.852 at 130 mph in the second and finished in 5th place overall. Mark was awarded the Best Altered Spot Prize by the commentators for his well-turned out popular car.
WB 142 saw Mikey Cresswell and son Andy sharing the driving of the Living the Dream slingshot. Mike made passes of 11.714 @ 114.88 mph and 11.867 @ 111 mph, before handing the car over to Andy, who started with a 20-second pass, and improved to a 12.470 @ 111 mph. The team dialled in at 11.50 for Sunday, but a first round run of 13.464 @ 113.93 mph put them out of contention for the Top 4. The second round produced an 11.717 @ 114.59 mph, and they finished in 8th place overall.
It was a pretty good event, though it was a shame the Sunday was shortened due to a really small amount of rain. Thanks very much to all the hard working marshals and officials at Shakey for their efforts, as always. We are now looking forward to the “Summer Nationals” MSA event at Santa Pod Raceway on June 14th & 15th! This will be Real Steel Series Round 5 and Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series Round 1.
