This event was the Nostalgia Nationals RWYB at Shakespeare County, and it was the third round of the Wild Bunch Series, as well as Real Steel Series Round 6 and Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series Round 2. There was a field of 11 Wild Bunch cars participating: 6 Altereds and 5 Slingshots.

Saturday The day started off dry and cool and cloudy with some wind, and remained that way for most of the day. The track was not open for slick-tyred vehicles until around quarter to 1. This was a practice day and may drivers got in 4 or 5 runs, despite the delayed start, as there was quite a lot of track time. Sunday (Series Points Day) Sunday's weather started off in a similar way, and at some points there were some grey clouds around, which dropped the smallest of showers at one point, causing a delay of only around 10 minutes. With the weather holding, we were able to run all 4 rounds of Wild Bunch action.
WB 1	saw another turn in the hotseat for Dave Williams in The Cunning Plan minivan altered. Dave made 4 runs on the Saturday, including consistent passes of 11.50, 11.51 and 11.49, before experiencing a hairy run, slowing to a 14.2. Dave dialled in at 11.50 for the rounds on Sunday, and began with an excellent pass of 11.496, just 4 thousandths off the Dial. He bettered this on the second pass, with an 11.502, recording the Closest to Dial-in of the day in the process. He then ran an 11.464 @ 113.85 mph, and an 11.541, going either side of the Dial but never far from it. This consistency gave him the win for the event! Dave was also awarded the Best Burnout Spot Prize by the commentators for his smoky efforts! Fair play!
WB 3	Darryl Howells was running the DASH Racing Chemical Reaction slingshot, and the team made a change in the fuel system at the start of the weekend. Darryl ran an improved 10.595 @ 125 mph for starters, but then had to back off on his second pass of the day with a wheel vibration. He then recorded a 10.216 @ 130 mph, followed by a new Personal Best E.T. and speed of 9.919 @ 138.95 mph! Fair shout! He finished the day with a 10.268 @ 131 mph and was real happy to be back in the 9's! Darryl dialled in at 10.10 for Sunday's rounds, and started with a 10.300 @ 131 mph in the first round. He then posted a 10.282 @ 131 mph in the second round. In the third round he was paired up with Andy Gosling in the RamRaider slingshot and had to back off his run when Gos drifted over into his lane in front of him. Both were a-ok! Darryl recorded a 10.410 @ 129 mph in the fourth round, and finished the day in 8th place overall. Darryl was awarded the Best Slingshot prize by the commentators for his well-turned out car and getting back into the 9's!
WB 6	‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was keen to run some good numbers in Backdraft after the pair of encouraging 9.1's at the Pod. This weekend, Claire was on back-up duty with a difference sporting a period ‘Jungle Pam’ style outfit, complete with red metalflake top! On the first run Saturday, Chris pulled a nice wheelie and recorded a great 9.065 @ 144.68 mph, his quickest and fastest for over a year! This also earned him the NSRA ‘Quickest Wild Bunch’ spark plug trophy for the weekend, and the team were really chuffed with the run! The second pass of the day netted a 9.117 @ 142 mph. The third run started well with a strong launch and wheelie, but on landing, the revs went up and Chris lost drive, coasting over to the side, and having to be recovered. Back in the pits, further inspection showed that the pinion coupler shaft had broken! Unfortunately this was not repairable at the track, and Chris was sidelined for the rest of the event. There was some consolation in that the team were awarded the Best Appearing Team Spot Prize by the commentators! Chris will be able to fix the damage and be back for the Minis!
WB 9	saw Andy Gosling taking his first turn in the RamRaider car for nearly a year. The team had just had the gearbox rebuilt after problems at the Summer Nationals at the Pod, and the car was ready to roll by the Thursday before the event. Andy had an excellent start, running a new Personal Best E.T. of 9.105 @ 144.95 mph on his first run Saturday! He followed this with a 9.221, also at 144 mph, and a close 9.107 @ 145 mph. He posted a 9.444 @ 118 mph on his fourth run of the day, but bounced back with a strong 9.114 @ 144 mph on the fifth. The team dialled in at 9.11 for Sunday, and again Gos made a great start, recording a 9.122 @ 146.87 mph in the first round. He followed this with another strong run, just 5 thousandths off Dial-in and equalling his PB, a 9.105 @ 147.00 mph, which turned out to be the fastest of the Bunch for the weekend! But in the third round, he drifted out of his lane across the centre line, and did not record a time. This was a great shame as he looked set for a Top 4 placing! Andy and the car were both perfectly fine, and he came back out for the fourth round, and posted a 9.341 @ 126 mph.
WB 17	saw Scot Durrant in the GAS Racing Tiki Munki Pinto-powered Ruby-bodied altered. Scottie made a great start to the weekend, recording a new Personal Best E.T. of 13.960 @ a new best speed of 91.46 mph on his first run Saturday. This also earned him the Wild Bunch Most Improved E.T. award, as he sliced .244 of his previous PB with the car! He then ran a 14.033 @ 90mph, and an 14.027, and an off-pace 14.79. Back in the pits, the team suspected gearbox damage, and set about dismantling the car. Gina's brother Mark was dispatched to Reading to pick up a spare, in the hopes of making the swap overnight. But in the meantime, Scot and friends realised the problem was with the flywheel, and cured this and reassembled the car! Many thanks to all who helped! The team then dialled in at 14.00 for Sunday's rounds, hoping to be consistent around that mark. Scottie made a great start, recording a 14.016 @ 92.03 mph in the first round, and a 14.090 at a new best speed of 92.83 mph in the second. He then ran an identical 14.016 in the third round, with a Best Reaction of .043, which he duplicated in the fourth round, where he posted a 14.185. Scottie finished in 4th place overall, and the whole team were very happy with their weekend!
WB 25	Terry Clifford was back out with his golden Ratcatcher Resurrection slingshot. He was another driver who had a great start to the weekend, as on the first run, he recorded a new Personal Best E.T. of 10.023 @ 130.94 mph, his first time over 130 mph! And getting oh so close to the 9's! He then ran a 10.139 and a 10.162 at another best speed of 131.06 mph. The team chose a Dial of 10.12 for Sunday, and Terry made another strong run of 10.074 @ 131.12 mph in the first round. The second round was somewhat off the pace, with a 10.269, but still at 130 mph. For the third round, he posted another good 10.027 at another best speed of 131.77mph, before recording a 10.176 @ 130 mph, and finishing in 5th place overall, and just missing out on the Top 4. Terry and Ruth and the team were really chuffed with the performance, as all 7 runs had been over the 130mph mark!
WB 43	Martin Holgate had a new starter motor in the Paranoia altered (and a spare in the trailer!). He put in several passes on the Saturday, beginning with a 10.058 @ 124.23 mph. Unfortunately, the car was shut down on the line a couple of times with leaks, but Martin and Herb cured the problems, and dialled in at 9.50 for Sunday, as they were hopeful of a tuning change they had made. Unfortunately, Martin did not record a time in the first round, as the car left before the lights ran! He then posted an 11.220 in the second round, and the team decided to sit out the rest of the rounds, to err on the side of caution, and take the car home to check out any possible cause. Martin has been enjoying his racing recently, and glad to be back out more often. His well turned out car also earned him the award for Best Altered, nominated by the commentators, so a bonus to the weekend! Hope to see him back out real soon.
WB 44	saw Dave Rowlands in the Destiny's Angel altered, fresh from his Runner-up placing at the Pod. He recorded good runs of 9.81, 9.76 and 9.89 during Saturday's practice, and the team dialled in at 9.78 for Sunday. This proved to be a good choice, as he started off with a 9.790 @ 139.021 mph in the first round! He then posted another close 9.803 @ 143.58 mph in the second and a good 9.793 in the third. He was a little further away in the fourth round, recording a 9.874 @ 142 mph, but his overall consistency earned him 2nd place for the event! Well done, Dave!
WB 76	Steve Field was back in The Black Pig altered and made four passes on the Saturday, including a 10.015 @ 137 mph, and a 9.86. He dialled in at 10.03 for Sunday's rounds, and was real close, with a 10.043 @ 132 mph in the first round. He then made a strong run of 9,906 @ 128 mph in the second, before getting real close to Dial again in the third, with a 10.020 @ 126 mph. Steve finished with a 9.948 @ 127 mph in the fourth round, and finished in 3rd place overall, his first Top 4 finish of the season, which the team were real happy with!
WB 95	Mark Richardson was back in the hotseat of his Pony Express altered. He made a few runs on Saturday, including a solid 9.633 @ 131.98 mph, not far off his best run. He dialled in at 9.75 on Sunday, and started well, with a 9.708 @ 130 mph in Round 1. He then posted a 9.676 in the second round and a close 9.777 in the third, which looked promising, until an uncharacteristic 10.407 run in the fourth round. Mark finished in 7th place overall, but was pleased with his earlier runs.
WB 142	saw Mike Cresswell and Hula P sharing the driving in the Living the Dream slingshot. Mike began with the car's best run of the weekend of 11.513 @ 114 mph. P then recorded an 11.62 and 11.64, showing good consistency, with Mikey running an errant 12 at the end of the day. The pair dialled in at 11.57 on Sunday, and Mike made the first pass with an 11.881. P then ran an 11.630 @ 116 mph, alternating with Mikey who ran an 11.910 @ 117 mph. P then posted the team's closest of the day with an 11.556 @ 112 mph, netting 6th place for the team.
It was a good weekend, with plenty of track time, and four drivers running PB's. The first round of Wild Bunch was in fact the closest we’ve ever had, with the closest 7 teams recording .004, .010, .012, .013, .016, .042 and .046 off Dials! Thanks very much to all Shakey and the NSRA for their hard work. We are now looking forward to the “Mini Showdown” on 12th & 13th July at Shakey! This will be Wild Bunch Series Round 4 and Real Steel Series Round 7.
