Qualifying
Saturday
This was a qualifying day and there were scheduled to be 3 qualifiers. The day turned out to be very cold and windy, and though there was about 5 minutes of downtime due to some drizzle, this luckily did not amount to much, so all the qualifiers were completed for all classes. Our rounds took place at 11am, 3:30pm and 6:20pm. All 6 teams qualified, with 5 of the 6 improving to Dial-in on the final qualifier.
WB 1 Ed Yates began qualifying with a Dial-in of 9.22 in the “RamRaider” slingshot. He posted a 9.336 at 142.97mph for starters. In the second round of qualifying, he performed his burnout, and kept going on down the track with a minor problem, which the team soon fixed before the third round. Ed and Gos had raised the Dial-in to 9.33 for the third round, and Ed recorded a 9.351 at 142.08mph, which put him in 2nd place overall.
WB 2 ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell and the team started with a Dial-in of 8.98 in the “Backdraft” slingshot, as Chris had been doing some tuning. He had to back off after his first launch, and recorded a 9.719 at 145.27mph in the first qualifier. The team raised the Dial to 9.18 for the second round, and again, Chris backed off a little after the wheelie, and ran a 9.363 at 147.13mph, his best speed for nearly a year. The team kept that Dial for the last qualifier, but broke out by a long way, with Chris posting his first 8-second pass of the year, an 8.992 at 147.16mph! He qualified in 6th place overall, but the team didn’t mind, as they were chuffed to be back in the 8's.
WB 4 Dave Rowlands was raring to get back in the car, after son Warren had occupied the hotseat for the first time at a recent test and tune, running some very respectable 10-second passes. Fair play, Warren! Dave dialled in at 9.80 for the first round, and was disappointed when he had to shut the car down on the line, after a small leak. The team sorted the problem, and came back out for the second qualifier, where Dave ran a solid 9.758 at 141.14mph. He lowered the Dial-in for the third round, to a 9.75, and ran a 9.822 at 139.80mph. Dave qualified in 5th place overall.
WB 25 Terry Clifford was back for his first event at Santa Pod this season in the “Ratcatcher Resurrection” slingshot. His first Dial-in was a 10.05, and he recorded a 10.125 at 129.57mph in that round. The team kept the Dial for the second round, and posted a very consistent 10.123 at 130.29mph. They raised the Dial for the last qualifier, to a 10.10, and Terry ran another solid pass of 10.137 at 129.52mph. Over the day his 3 runs were only .014 apart! He qualified in 3rd place overall.
WB 40 Darren Law had been running well with “The Wicked Lady” rear-engine dragster and began the weekend leading the Real Steel Series. The team started with a Dial-in of 9.00, and Darren posted a good 9.088 at 144.80mph in the first qualifier. The team kept the same Dial for the next round, and Darren recorded a new Personal Best E.T. and speed of 8.935 at 147.13mph! The team lowered their Dial accordingly to 8.95 for the third qualifier, and Darren earned the #1 Qualifier spot with an 8.964 at 146.70mph.
WB 99 Adz Price was in his third MSA event, with the “Go Hard or Go Home!!!” Topolino altered, and the team were still elated from Adam's first 10-second passes at the ‘June Shootout’ at Shakey. They started the weekend with a Dial-in of 10.85, and Adz ran a 10.910 at 122.92mph for the first round, to go straight into #1 spot after the first round. They kept the same Dial for the second round, and he posted a strong 10.895 at 123.20mph, improving and still keeping the #1 spot. They stuck with this Dial for the final qualifier and Adz ran a closer 10.891 at 123.21mph, but due to three other racers improving as well, this meant he qualified in 4th place overall!
Race Day Sunday (Eliminations)
Sunday dawned brighter, and turned out to be much warmer eventually. And all rounds of all eliminations were completed by about 4pm!

Quarter-Finals
All 6 Wild Bunch cars had qualified for eliminations, so there were due to be 3 good races in the first round, the Quarter-finals. We were called out at about 11:30am. The first race was an all-slingshot pairing between Chris and Terry. Chris dialled in at 9.05, whilst Terry chose a 10.10. Chris had a Reaction time advantage off the start line and posted a slowing 9.250 at 118mph to take the win over Terry's charging 10.211 at 128.82mph. The next pairing saw Darren and Adam matched up. Darren dialled in at 8.95, and posted the “Best Reaction” of the Bunch with an .063, whilst running a 9.006 at 141.58mph, to Adam's breakout 10.845 at 124.18mph on his 10.88 Dial. Adam and the team were still chuffed as this was yet another Personal Best E.T. and speed for the team! The third matchup should have seen Ed facing Dave, but unfortunately Dave had problems with a leak during the morning fire up, and he was just not able to fix it in time for the round. Commiserations to him, but we’re sure he’ll bounce straight back next event! This left Ed to solo to a 9.287 at 142.87mph on his 9.33 Dial-in. Terry earned the 4th place for the event by being the closest to Dial-in without breaking out of the quarter-finals runners-up. And Team Gridlock with “Go Hard or Go Home!!!” were awarded the “Best Appearing Car & Team” Spot Prize by the commentators, who this weekend were Tog and Darryl Bradford. Another bonus to their good weekend!

Semi-finals
After the quarter-finals, there was a bit of a wait, and the teams were called to the fireup road at about 2:30pm. This time it was Darren with the Bye, and he took full advantage of going flat out to run another 8-second pass, with an 8.980 at 146.61mph on his 8.95 Dial. The only race of the round saw Ed taking on Chris, for another all-slingshot pairing. This time Ed had the reaction time advantage, and also recorded a perfect E.T. to Dial, with a 9.280 at 142.49mph on his 9.28 Dial. This combination was unbeatable, though Chris tried hard with a breakout 9.034 at 146.26mph on his 9.05 Dial. A great race! Chris finished in 3rd place for the weekend. And Ed won the “Closest to Dial-in” Spot Prize with that spot on run!

Final
As expected, all Finalists were being called to the pairings lanes as the semi-finalists returned to their pits! But there was some drama for the “Wicked Lady” team, as they had developed a leak in the brake pipe. The whole team set to work, with Karen and Sue and others on the scout for brake flaring tools, and other Bunchers helping, with Crazy Chris obtaining some tools, and notably Gos and Ed pitching in to help the team fix the problem in time to race against them in the Final! Fair play, guys! They managed to safely make the repairs and the call, and went down for the Final round after 3:30pm. Ed lowered his Dial to 9.28, and Darren kept the 8.95. The tension was mounting, and Darren pulled a red light, coasting to a 9.785 at 108.82mph, handing the win to Ed, who broke out with a real strong run of 9.200 at 143.01mph. Many Congratulations to Ed and Gos and the team on their first event win this season!

The results mean that Darren and the “Wicked Lady” team are still leading the Real Steel Series, with Chris moving up to 2nd place, and the Dog's Bollocks team up into 3rd, with Dave Rowlands rounding off the Top 4. Darren and the team have also now taken the lead in the MSA Challenge Series, with Dog's Bollocks now 2nd, Chris 3rd and Dave Rowlands in 4th place. The Top 4 from this event are naturally the Top 4 in the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series, after this first round.

It was a really good event, where the weather was in our favour. All the teams enjoyed the event and put on a great show with some really close racing. Many thanks to all at Santa Pod for all their hard work and their hospitality. And thanks for the great pit space, near the fence, with awesome viewing!

We are now really looking forward to the 3rd Wild Bunch Series round of our 15th season, which will be the ‘Nostalgia Nationals’ at Shakey next weekend, 26th & 27th June. This will be the 6th Real Steel Series round of 2010 and the 2nd Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series round. It will be another great event! Hope to see loads of the Bunch out for this one!
