The weather forecast was looking really good and pretty hot for the weekend! Most of the Bunch got in at least 3 runs on the Saturday. And there was plenty of track time available. Sunday was also nice and sunny with a light breeze, and we completed all 4 rounds of Wild Bunch competition. Six drivers ran Personal Best E.T.'s and six ran Personal Best Speeds over the weekend, and once again the Bunch put on a great show on Sunday, running in a group. Really exciting to watch!
WB 1 saw Ray Ford back in the hotseat of the Team Dog's B's “RamRaider” slingshot. Ray opened his account with a 9.363 at 144.13mph on Saturday. He followed this with runs of 9.383 at 144.00mph and a stronger 9.286 at 142.41mph. The team dialled in at 9.32 for Sunday's rounds, and Ray started the day with an excellent 9.169 at 144.46mph! He followed this with a similar 9.175 at 145.92mph in the second round. He recorded a 9.658 at 123.87mph in the third and a 9.223 at 144.24mph in the fourth. Ray finished in 12th place overall. The team are still leading the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series, and are 4th in both the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series.
WB 2 ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was in his sixth event of the season, and started the weekend by tuning the fuel system on the “Backdraft” slingshot. He started the day Saturday with a 9.105 at 145.19mph. He later put in two consistent runs of 9.160 at 142.71mph and 9.149 at 142.41mph. The team chose a 9.13 Dial-in for the rounds on Sunday. Chris posted a 9.110 at 144.06mph in the first round. He then went quicker in the second and third rounds with a 9.095 at 144.08mph and a 9.037 at 144.42mph. He was then off the pace in the fourth round after backing off after the launch, with a 9.390 at 144.87mph. Chris finished in 6th place overall for the weekend. He is still in 5th place in the Wild Bunch Series, 2nd place in the Real Steel Series and 3rd in the Roy Wilding Series.
WB 4 Dave Rowlands was also in his sixth event of the season with his “Destiny's Angel” altered. He had repaired the leak which had prevented him from competing on eliminations day at the Summer Nationals. His first run Saturday was a solid 9.748 at 141.05mph. He only made one more pass that day, a 9.899 at 141.55mph. He dialled in at 9.80 for Sunday, and ran a great 9.804 at 140.85mph in the first round. He remained consistent throughout the day with a 9.853 at 141.08mph, a 9.860 at 141.38mph and a 9.824 at 139.93mph, to take the event win! What a way to bounce back! Fair play! With this result, Dave is now leading the Wild Bunch Series for the first time ever! He has also moved up from 4th place to take the lead in the Real Steel Series and is 2nd in the Roy Wilding Series.
WB 8 Mark Coulsell & Steve Cassisi and friends of the ‘Limited Funz Drag Racing Team’ had been working real hard for the last few weeks to finish off their brand new “Ballbreaker” slingshot. It looked resplendent in its black and orange stripes, and is very well turned out with attention to detail. The team spent the day in the pits Saturday putting on the finishing touches, and trying to get the car fired. There were a few problems throughout the day and they did not get the motor running. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem in the engine, possibly with the rings. The team are hoping that there is no damage, so hopefully they will be able to take the car home, strip the engine and fix the issue, and be back out really quick. They have some very smart uniforms and a very co-ordinated colour theme, so we look forward to seeing the car running soon and the team out on track!
WB 11 saw Dave Williams in his fifth event of the season with the “Green with Envy” altered. He had a couple of gremlins on the Saturday, but posted two good runs of 11.418 at 119.26mph and an 11.453 at 117.55mph. Dave and Linda dialled in at 11.40 for the rounds on Sunday, and started well with an 11.467 at 118.23mph. Dave's next run earned him an equal share in the “Closest to Dial-in” Spot Prize, as he was just one thousandth off Dial, with an 11.399 at 119.31mph. His third round run netted him a new Personal Best Speed when he ran an 11.365 at 120.01mph, his first time in the 120's. He improved on this on his fourth pass with an 11.323 at 120.49mph. Dave finished in 4th place overall for the weekend. He is now in 3rd place in the Wild Bunch Series and 6th in Real Steel.
WB 25 Terry Clifford was looking forward to running his “Ratcatcher Resurrection” slingshot, and practically all of the family joined the team to enjoy the weekend's sunshine. Terry had been really consistent lately, and hoped that this would translate into a good result on the Sunday. He made four good runs on the Saturday: 10.227 at 128.01mph, 10.222 at 128.70mph, 10.346 at 125.94mph in the heat of the day, and a 10.273 at 127.73mph. The team dialled in at 10.27 on Sunday, and Terry promptly went out and ran quicker, with a 10.141 at 128.51mph! He followed this with a 10.235 at 130.26mph. He was again incredibly consistent in the third and fourth rounds with a 10.141 (again!) at 130.19mph and a 10.147 at 130.22mph! Terry finished in 7th place overall. He is in 4th place in the Roy Wilding Series, 9th in Wild Bunch and 8th in the Real Steel Series.
WB 35 Dick Sharp and the team were raring to go in the “Dorset Horn” altered, after the long thrash to repair the body and other damage sustained in the incident at the ‘Easter Thunderball’. The team had managed to make their deadline to display the car at the Xtreme Wheels show 2 weeks before, and the altered looked immaculate. The car is now on version 7.1, and have had many comments that it is the best yet. Dick began Saturday in good form, with a Personal Best E.T. and speed in this incarnation of the car, with a 10.119 at 133.45mph. He then posted a 10.354 at another best speed of 133.51mph. And then, on the third run of the day, Dick ran back into the 9's for the first time in half a dozen years, posting a 9.844 at 139.14mph. Congratulations to him and the whole team on this achievement! The team dialled in at 9.90 for Sunday's rounds, and Dick picked up where he left off the day before, with another PB of 9.815 at 137.99mph. He then had an off pace run of 10.111 at 132.34mph in the second round, but then back into the 9's in the third with a 9.839 at 140.37mph, another best speed, and first time over 140 with the car. He then took another couple of tenths off in the fourth round, recording a 9.633 at 141.39mph, both PBs, and earning himself the ‘Most Improved E.T. trophy for the Bunch, taking a full .750 off his previous best time with the car. Great stuff! The team were also awarded the “Best Altered” Spot Prize by the commentators for the well turned out machine. Dick finished in 9th place overall, and the whole team were thrilled with the car's performance over the weekend. Very well deserved to all!
WB 52 Ant Harris was back in “Frantic” after some recent work done on the front end of the altered. The team were confident of the new setup and looked forward to testing it out. Ant's first run Saturday was a 9.480 at 114.57mph, and the team were all pleased with this. He then improved to a 9.212 at 143.40mph on his second pass. He then aimed for a handle on the Dial-in and put in 3 consistent runs of 9.318 at 142.51mph, 9.399 at 141.73mph and 9.390 at 142.30mph. The team dialled in at 9.40 for Sunday's rounds, and Ant started well with a 9.383 at 142.80mph. His second pass was going well, with a 9.362 at 139.30mph, but then he experienced a problem with the butterfly steering wheel and ended up veering off into the field not far after the finish line. Ant had a very bumpy ride shutting down, but luckily the altered stayed upright and Ant was able to get out of the car under his own steam eventually. Many thanks to the fire and medical crews who were quickly on the scene and did a great job of ensuring Ant was alright, after a checkup at the medical centre. We are all glad to see that he is okay, and the car relatively unscathed after another ‘Wildest Ride’ for him!
WB 54 Phil Sweeney was in his second event of the year in his “Bone Idle” altered, and again Dean Smythe was on crewing duties. He did not record a time on his first run Saturday, but later put in three more runs of 9.672 at 127.20mph, 9.713 at 132.41mph and 9.655 at 138.13mph, to get a good baseline for his runs Sunday. Phil dialled in at 9.67, but promptly went out and obliterated this with an 8.883 at 138.75mph in the first round! This earned him the NSRA Prize for the ‘Quickest Wild Bunch racer’ of the weekend. He then posted a more ‘sedate’ 9.399 at 138.70mph in the second round. He ran a 9.618 at 124.71mph in the third round and a 9.546 at 113.89mph in the fourth. Phil finished in 14th place overall, and was awarded the “Best Burnout” Spot Prize by the commentators.
WB 71 saw Andy Solley out for his first event of the year with his “Repeat Offender” altered. He began Saturday with a pass of 9.766 at 133.84mph straight off the trailer. He followed this with a new Personal Best E.T. of 9.610 at 135.20mph, so a real good start to the season. He then ran a 9.914 at 130.25mph. He and the team dialled in at 9.62 for Sunday's rounds, and on the very first run, recorded an equal “Closest to Dial-in”, with a 9.621 at 135.60mph! he then ran another PB of 9.523 at 136.60mph in the second round, and yet another in the third, a 9.41 at a new best speed of 138.05mph. He finished the day with a 9.506 at 136.57mph, and was in 8th place overall. A great weekend for the team with the car's best performance ever.
WB 74 Simon Williams was looking forward to making more progress in the “Pure Nostalgia” slingshot. He made two runs on Saturday of 9.994 at 139.00mph, and 10.053 at a new Personal Best Speed of 146.85mph, with a couple of wheelies off the line. The team dialled in at 9.70 for Sunday, and Simon opened his account with a 9.807 at 141.64mph. He followed this with a 9.854 at another best speed of 147.35mph. On his third pass, he recorded a new Personal Best E.T. of 9.689 at 147.41mph, yet another best speed. His last round run netted a slower 10.072 at 146.58mph. Simon finished in 10th place overall for the Bunch, and was chuffed with all the quick runs.
WB 76 Steve Field was on his second Wild Bunch event this season with his and Lesley's “Black Pig Too” slingshot. Steve had problems at the last event getting the car to fire up smoothly, and did not make it onto the track. But this weekend was a whole different story. He had the car fired up and timed up, and put in a checkout pass of 10.672 at 112.33mph for starters Saturday, and then ran a much improved 9.841 at 138.85mph. His third pass of the day produced a really strong run, and a new Personal Best E.T. of 9.695 at 139.41mph - very well deserved after all the team's headscratching at the previous event. So looks like they’ve really cracked it! Steve and Lesley dialled in at 9.80 for the rounds Sunday, and his first run was a 9.778 at 140.20mph, a new best speed. His next pass was almost equally the other side of the Dial-in, with a 9.821 at 137.31mph. he then recorded 9.712 at 140.35mph, another best speed in the third round, and a 9.825 at 138.76mph in the fourth round. This consistency earned Steve 2nd place overall for the weekend, and he and Lesley were well chuffed with the performance! And the icing on the cake was that the commentators awarded them the “Best Slingshot” Spot Prize!
WB 78 saw Keith Crampton in his third event this year, with the “Soultown Shaker” slingshot. He started the day Saturday with a run of 11.640 at 113.44mph, and followed this up with an 11.661 at 113.91mph. On his third pass of the day he recorded an 11.368 at 114.09mph, a new Personal Best E.T. Keith dialled in at 11.62 on Sunday, and went straight out and ran an 11.466 at 113.29mph. He ran two very consistent passes of 11.374 at 114.45mph and 11.375 at 113.64mph in the second and third rounds, and then posted an 11.438 at 114.34mph in the fourth. Keith finished in 13th place overall, and was pleased to run quicker than expected in the hot weather.
WB 95 was Mark Richardson's second event of the season with the “Pony Express” altered. Mark's first pass of the weekend was a 9.363 at a good speed of 140.06mph. He later posted a 9.659 at 139.23mph, in the heat of the day. Karen and Mark dialled in at 9.35 for the rounds on Sunday, and Mark ran a good 9.277 at 141.08mph in the first round. His second pass was also quicker than expected, with a 9.315 at 140.60mph, which also netted a “Best Reaction” of .012. He was really near the Dial in the third round, posting a 9.354 at 140.95mph, and followed this with a 9.395 at 141.28mph. Mark was really pleased to finish in 3rd place overall and enjoyed the weekend.
WB 99 Adam Price was in his sixth event of the season with the Team Gridlock “Go Hard or Go Home!!!” Topolino altered, and the team were hoping for more PB's again. They didn’t have long to wait, as Adam's first run Saturday produced a new Personal Best E.T. of 10.788 at 123.06mph. he then recorded a 10.884 at 123.11mph and a 10.794 at a new Personal Best Speed of 124.87mph. His fourth run of the day also netted a PB, with a 10.787 at 124.23mph. The team deliberated the Dial-in and opted for a 10.79 on Sunday. Once again, Adz started the day with a PB of 10.693 at 123.49mph! His second run resulted in another best speed, with a 10.708 at 124.92mph. His third round pass produced another PB of 10.689 at 123.48mph! He finished the day off with a 10.712 at 124.28mph and ended up in 5th place overall. The team were also awarded the “Best Appearing Team” Spot Prize by the commentators for their smart appearance and great performance. And the team were again thrilled to run 6 more PB's!
WB 109 Andrew Murphy was once again back in the hotseat of the “B-Sting” Topolino altered, after Paul's win at the June Shootout. He started the weekend with a 10.725 at 129.59mph. He then put in three more passes of 10.670 at 125.55mph, 10.707 at 126.28mph and 10.675 at 125.01mph. The team dialled in at 10.69 for the rounds on Sunday. And Andy was another driver running quicker than expected, as he recorded a 10.608 at 129.60mph. His second run was quite a way off the pace, with an 11.219 at 126.87mph. He was then much closer to dial on the next two runs, posting a 10.720 at 126.37mph and a 10.676 at 126.93mph. He finished in 11th place overall for the weekend. The team are now in 2nd place in the Wild Bunch Series and 5th place in the Real Steel Series.
WB 142 smiling Mikey Cresswell was driving for the fReQ Racing team's first event of the year in their “Living the Dream” slingshot. The team had changed the colour from blue to black with a pink stripe, and promised that the paint job would be different at each event this year, depending on who was driving. Mikey was really chuffed to be back at the track with the car and team. He experienced a problem on his pass on Saturday, when the brake calliper broke! But luckily he was able to get the car stopped safely in plenty of time. And he hopes to fix the problem in time for the Mini event. Good to see the whole team back, and best of luck with the repairs.
Big Congratulations to Dave Rowlands on the win, and moving up three places in the Wild Bunch Series! And well done to all the Wild Bunch teams, who really did put on an excellent show again all weekend. Congrats to all those who ran PB's! There were a lot of good performances this weekend, with several teams seeing the benefit of a lot of hard work. We all enjoyed being a part of it all!

It was another good event, thanks to the hard work of the marshals and officials and track crew at Shakey, who really helped with the organisation of the rounds too. Many thanks to those who thought to put a table with umbrella and water and squash at the top end for the thirsty drivers. Great idea, and much appreciated! We are now really looking forward to the fourth Wild Bunch Series round and the seventh Real Steel Series round of the season at the “Mini Showdown” at Shakey on July 10th & 11th! It is also our Annual fancy dress party, and this year sees a Medieval theme, so it will be a lot of fun, as well as much more close, exciting competition with a big field of Wild Bunch!
