The weather forecast was mixed for the weekend, and Saturday dawned pretty cool and cloudy. We all knew the forecast was rainy for Sunday, so we again put our back-up plan into action, and by agreement of the majority of drivers present, scheduled our first Series points round for 4pm Saturday afternoon. Many of the teams managed to get in 2 or more runs throughout the day, before the round. Once again the plan worked well as all of the Wild Bunch cars competing completed a round at about 4:40pm late afternoon, and we managed to get a result. And true to the forecast, after a small dry weather window around 5am, the rain started around 7am, and did not let up. It was clear by 10:30am that there would be no racing that day, and again the officials called it off around noon. Throughout Saturday 2 drivers ran Personal Best E.T.'s and one of these ran a best Speed.
WB 2 Dave Rowlands was back in the hotseat of the “Destiny's Angel” altered, after son Warren's recent trip into the 9's with the car. Dave put in just one run in testing on the Saturday, a 9.745 at 141.33mph. He dialled in at 9.75 for the round, and recorded a 9.617 at 143.49mph, and finished in a good 3rd place overall, his second Top 4 finish of the season.
WB 3 Adam Price was in his fourth event of the season with the Team Gridlock “Go Hard or Go Home!!!” Topolino altered. He began the day Saturday with a 9.323 at 134.55mph. He later posted a quicker run of 9.315 at 132.75mph. The team dialled in at 9.29 for the round, expecting Adam to go quicker. He recorded a 9.424 at 134.05mph, at the Wild Bunch “Best Reaction” of .060. Adam finished in 4th place overall, just one thousandth behind Dave Rowlands! He is now 4th in the Wild Bunch Series and 3rd in Real Steel.
WB 4 was the first drive of the season for Andy Gosling in the “RamRaider” slingshot. It was the team's third event of the season with the Wild Bunch, after Ed's two MSA event drives. Gos started the weekend off well with a really strong 9.143 at 146.27mph. Really good for his first drive in over 9 months! He then went even quicker with a new Personal Best E.T. of 9.075 at 146.35mph! Fair play Gos! The team dialled in at 9.10 for Saturday's round, and Gos was a bit out of shape mid-track, and posted a 9.464 at 141.64mph, to finish in 9th place overall.
WB 6 ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was fresh from back-to-back wins with the “Backdraft” slingshot. Going in to the event he was leading all of the Series. Chris began Saturday with a great pass of 8.892 at 148.71mph, which was the quickest and fastest of the Bunch all day! On his next run Saturday, Chris had to back off the launch, and recorded a 9.290 at 145.61mph. Chris and the team dialled in at 8.90 for the round that afternoon, and Chris pulled a double wheelie on the launch (!!) and posted a 9.086 at 146.80mph. He finished in equal 6th place overall. He is now in 2nd place in both the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series.
WB 8 saw Mark Coulsell and the Limited Funz team back with the “Ballbreaker” slingshot, after repairs to a head which was torched at the ‘Easter Thunderball’, and also repairs to Mark's index finger, which was badly cut recently, meaning he had to sit out the Spring Nationals event. Mark and the team prepped the car on the morning, and Mark ran a checkout 10.637 at 123.01mph. Unfortunately, when the team were getting ready for another run, they discovered damage to some push rods. They eventually got some spares to try, but this was Saturday evening, so they had to miss the first round. Hope they did the trick, and that Mark and the team will be back out at the Nostalgias! They were awarded both the “Best Engineered” Spot Prize by the scrutineer, and the “Best Slingshot” Spot Prize by the commentary team. Just rewards for a great looking car!
WB 11 saw Dave Williams in his fourth event of the season with his “Green with Envy” altered. His first run Saturday was an 11.560 at 118.70mph. He later posted an 11.423 at 119.00mph. Linda dialled him in at 11.40 for the afternoon round, and Dave recorded an 11.564 at 117.39mph. He finished in 5th place overall. Dave and Linda were really pleased as the car was awarded the “Best Altered” Spot Prize by the commentators, for the second event in a row!
WB 17 saw Gina Rumble's second Wild Bunch drive of the season in the “Tiki Munki” slingshot coupe. Gina had run low 14's at the last event, and Scottie had made some carb adjustments and they hoped the car would go quicker. Sure enough it did, and Gina recorded a new Personal Best E.T. and Speed of 13.202 at 95.93mph! Over a second quicker than her best with the car two weeks before, and now some three tenths quicker than any of the “Tiki Munki” configurations! Well done Gina and Scottie!! Gina proved to be really consistent throughout the day, as she then recorded a 13.253 at 96.72mph, and a 13.220 at 96.97mph, another best Speed. She and Scottie dialled her in at 13.22 for the round later that day, and Gina ran another 13.2, with a 13.267 at 96.47mph, to finish in 2nd place overall, the team's first Top 4 of the year! Gina was also really chuffed when she was voted the “Driver's Choice” by the majority of the Wild Bunch drivers attending. Great stuff! Gina and Scottie are now in 3rd place in the Wild Bunch Series.
WB 25 Terry Clifford with the “Ratcatcher Resurrection” slingshot was another driver in his fourth event this year, and he was in 2nd place in the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series going into the event. Terry's first pass Saturday was a 10.308 at 130.93mph. He followed this with a problematic 11.042 at 124.79mph. He and Ruth and the team dialled in at 10.30 even for the round. Terry proved more consistent again when he ran a 10.336 at 128.10mph, to take his first win of the season! He also won the “Closest to Dial-in” Spot Prize with this run. Congratulations to Terry and the whole team! This means that he is now leading both the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series, by 3 points in each. Fair play!
WB 78 was Keith Crampton's second event of the year with the Bunch, with his “Soultown Shaker” slingshot. Keith hoped that he had cured his clutch problems, experienced at the ‘Easter Thunderball’ and was keen to test his car. He started the weekend with an 11.918 at 114.15mph, and was quite happy with how the car ran. His next run was not far off this, with a 12.010 at 116.89mph. Keith dialled in at 11.93 for Saturday's round and recorded an improved 11.701 at 115.66mph, finishing in 8th place overall.
WB 91 was the third Wild Bunch event of the season for Bob Hawkins in the “Time Traveller” slingshot. He had recently run his first 150mph+ pass in the car, so congrats to him on that achievement! Bob's first run Saturday was a 9.279 at 141.80mph. He later followed this with a consistent 9.267 at 142.30mph. Though somewhat off his recent pace, Bob is still testing the nitrous settings. He left the set up for the round and dialled in accordingly at 9.20. He ran a 9.386 at 141.04mph, and finished in equal 6th place overall, with exactly the same difference to Dial as Chris! Bob is now in 4th place in the Real Steel Series.
Big Congratulations to Terry and the whole team on the win! And to Gina, Dave and Adz for their Top 4 placings. And well done to all the Wild Bunch teams on some more good close racing. Congratulations to both of those who ran PB's, and to all the Bunch who put on another great show!

It was a pretty good event, though shortened by the weather. Many thanks to all the marshals and officials and track crew at Shakey for their hard work as always. We are now really looking forward to the third Wild Bunch Series round, fifth Real Steel Series round and first Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Car Series round of 2011 at the “Nostalgia Nationals” at Shakey on June 25th & 26th! Hoping for better weather and a really big field of Wild Bunch for that one!!
