The weather forecast was mixed for Saturday and promising for Sunday, so we hoped we could get the full 4 rounds in this weekend. Saturday had been wet early on, and dawned cloudy and cool, though the track soon dried. Many of the teams managed to get in 3 or more runs throughout the day. Sunday was sunny and warm all day!! It got quite hot in the afternoon too. Due to some loss of track time with an oildown there was not time for all the rounds, but we did complete 3 full rounds! Throughout the weekend 4 drivers ran Personal Best E.T.'s and 6 ran PB Speeds. Well done to all!
WB 2 Dave Rowlands was in his 5th event this year, and made two great 9.5-second runs Saturday in the “Destiny's Angel” altered within 2 hundredths of each other, of 9.517 at 144.18mph and 9.534 at 144.46mph. He dialled in at 9.52 Sunday and had some kind of battery or electrical problem in the first round, losing fire before the run. He pushed back to the wall and managed to get going in time to pair up with another WB car within the class slot, and ran a 12.360 at 76mph. He then posted better runs of 10.066 at 136.85mph and 10.315 at 135.04mph in the next two rounds, to finish in 8th place overall for the weekend. He was awarded the “Best Altered” Spot Prize by the commentators.
WB 3 Adam Price was also in his 5th event this season, and began the weekend with a 9.325 at 133.90mph in the “Go Hard or Go Home!!!” altered. He later ran a 9.277 at 134.55mph, a 9.273 at a new Personal Best Speed of 139.50mph and a 9.251 at 134.5mph. The team dialled in at 9.27 for Sunday, and Adam recorded a 9.326 at 133.62mph in the first round, with a Wild Bunch ‘Best Reaction’ of .052. He then posted a 9.342 at 135.17mph in the second round and a 9.351 at 137.59mph in the third. He finished in 2nd place for the event, his 4th Top 4 finish this season; and was also awarded the ‘Best Burnout’ trophy by the commentators, for the third time this year! Adam is now in 3rd place in both the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series.
WB 4 was the first drive this year for Ray Ford in the Team Dog's Bollocks “RamRaider” slingshot. Ray started the weekend well with a 9.306 at 146.86mph, and ran consistently all Saturday with a 9.287 at 147.07mph (not far off his best speed) and a 9.296 at 145.83mph, all within 2 hundredths of each other. The team dialled in at 9.29 for Sunday's rounds, and Ray ran well again with a 9.364 at 145.00mph for his opening bid, followed by a 9.342 at 146.00mph (exactly the same ET as Adam's 2nd round run!) and a 9.306 at 145.14mph in the final round. This last run was “Closest to Dial-in” for the Bunch at .016 off, and Ray took the team's first win for 2011! Congratulations Ray and the team!!
WB 6 ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was in his fifth event of the season, and started Saturday with an 8.975 at 146.85mph in the “Backdraft” slingshot. He followed this with an 8.959 at 147.07mph, both runs within 2 hundredths of each other. He was later really chuffed to take part in a demo push start and flag start alongside Gina in the “Tiki Munki”, organised by the NSRA. Chris used his 1964 GMC Suburban as push car for this, and indeed all weekend long. The team dialled in at 8.96 for the rounds on Sunday, and Chris started by posting a 9.015 at 145.87mph. After nearly not firing in the second round, Chris managed to get the car fired and pair up with another WB car within the class time slot, and ran a 9.029 at 144.56mph. In the third round he recorded a 9.097 at 140.78mph and finished in 4th place. He is now in second place in both the Wild Bunch and the Real Steel Series.
WB 8 Mark Coulsell was back in the Limited Funz Racing “Ballbreaker” slingshot, after replacing the push rods broken at the last event. As usual, the team were raring to go! Mark started Saturday well with a new Personal Best ET of 9.206 at 135.07mph, taking over three tenths off his previous best run. He later ran a 9.734 at 137.71mph and had a problem and recorded a 22-second pass. The team dialled in at 9.20 for Sunday, and Mark posted a 9.701 at 137.26mph in the first round. He ran a 9.467 at 130.02mph in the second round, but had a problem on the third and had to push round to the start of the return road. He later got the car fired, but this was out of session after the Outlaw Anglias round so did not count. It was an improved run of 9.399, so good to see no major problems.
WB 11 saw Dave Williams in his fifth event of the season with his “Green with Envy” altered. He ran well Saturday, posting an 11.567 at 119.21mph, near his best speed, an 11.524 at 118.87mph and an 11.495 at 119.16mph. Linda dialled him in at 11.50 for Sunday and Dave recorded a pass of 11.604 at 116.77mph to start the day. He later ran an 11.609 at 118.16mph and an 11.653 at 117.00mph. Again these were consistent runs, but the car seemed to suffer with the heat like several other teams so was a bit down on Saturday's numbers. He finished in 5th place overall.
WB 17 Gina Rumble was again in the hotseat of the “Tiki Munki” slingshot coupe and started the weekend well, recording a 13.278 at 97.69mph, a new Personal Best Speed. She later posted a 13.369 at 99.36mph, another best speed, and later another Personal Best ET and Speed of 13.087 at 101.14mph! (This was the first time over the ton for any of the Tiki Munki versions!). Big congrats to Gina and Scottie on this!! And close to that 12 now! Gina was also really chuffed to take part in her first ever push start and flag start, against Crazy Chris. The team used their 1954 Chevy for this, and it looked real cool! They dialled in at 13.25 for the rounds on Sunday and Gina ran a 13.456 at 94.35mph to start off with. She posted a 13.373 at 94.48mph in the second round and a 13.334 at 96.69mph in the third, to finish in 6th place overall for the weekend. The team are currently in 4th place in the Wild Bunch Series.
WB 25 Terry Clifford was another driver in his fifth event this year, with the “Ratcatcher Resurrection” slingshot. He was real consistent Saturday and was yet another driver running within 2 hundredths all day: starting with a 10.345 at 130.35mph, followed by a 10.326 at 129.16mph and later a 10.335 at 129.11mph. The team dialled in at 10.33 Sunday and Terry ran a10.405 at 127.54mph to open his account. He ran a quicker 10.282 at 128.16mph in the second round and a 10.440 at 126.52mph in the third, to finish in 3rd place overall, his 5th Top 4 of the season! And the only driver to be in the Top 4 at all events this year! Well done, Terry! He is leading both the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series.
WB 35 saw Dick Sharp back with the Bunch in the “Dorset Horn” altered, after missing the last 2 events. His first pass Saturday was a 10.395 at 129.67mph. He followed this with a 10.674 at 120.64mph, experiencing some problems with the fuel delivery system. The team investigated this, but as the engine was running a bit on the lean side they decided not to risk running the car Sunday. Hope they can solve the problem, and be back out running well soon. Good luck to all!
WB 52 Ant Harris had brought the “Frantic” Topolino altered to the track, and wanted to be part of the event and support the Wild Bunch. He did not run the car this weekend, but it is up for sale as a rolling chassis, as he has a new car! Hope to see him out in that soon!
WB 68 Mick Gleadow made his Wild Bunch debut with his new slingshot “Jurassic Parts”. He is by no means a newcomer, having started Drag Racing in the late 60's, and successfully campaigning a variety of cars. He got the bug again a few years ago, and decided to build a slingshot, and join the Wild Bunch. He spent much of the weekend working on the car in the pits, curing a few minor teething problems, and doing a few fireups. He was trying to get a handle on the idle, but unfortunately did not make a run this weekend. We hope he’ll be back out soon. Welcome Mick!
WB 73 was another newcomer to the Bunch, Mike Couch in his “Flathead Frenzy” slingshot, powered by a flathead, of course! (He has been the quickest runner in other classes with another flathead engine, but this is his first time running a slingshot). He spent some of Saturday checking things out, and later ran a debut pass of 14.033 at 85.80mph. The car looks real nice, and is pretty unique and Mike also runs a period fuel mask, like several of the other Wild Bunch racers. He joined in with the Bunch Sunday and dialled in at 14.00 even. He posted a 14.464 at 85.38mph in the first round. He had some more tuning to do, and checks to make, so sat out the rest of the day. Welcome, Mike!
WB 78 was Keith Crampton's third event of the year with the Bunch, with his “Soultown Shaker” slingshot. Keith and the crew had some great new team wear, including some nice embroidered letterman jackets on Saturday, and some white Castrol overalls on the Sunday! He began Saturday with a 12.193 at 116.26mph, and followed this with a 12.122 at 116.44mph. He later ran a much better 11.620 at 117.03mph. Keith dialled in at 11.62 for the rounds Sunday, and ran a 12.052 at 113.23mph to start with. He then improved to an 11.506 at 118.23mph, a new Personal Best Speed! He went quicker again with an 11.479 at 117.32mph in the third round, finishing in 7th place overall. Keith was awarded the “Best Slingshot” Spot Prize, as well as the “Best Appearing Team” award by the commentators. Well deserved!
WB 91 Bob Hawkins was in his fourth event of the season with the Wild Bunch in his “Time Traveller” slingshot. He started off with a 9.403 at 145.99mph pass Saturday. He then experienced electrical problems before the next run, nearly not being able to start. He also had a problem on the burnout, and ran a 10.287 at 151.26mph. He bounced back later that day with an “NSRA Quickest Wild Bunch” run of 8.784, at a new Personal Best Speed of 154.44mph!! He dialled in at 8.80 for the rounds, and ran a 9.146 at 149.36mph to start with. He was back in the 8's again in the second round, with an 8.830 at 151.78mph, but red lit on the third, and recorded a 9.606 at 152.86mph. Bob is currently 4th in the Real Steel Series.
WB 129 Pedro Rawlinson was back out with his “The Fleeting Glimpse” slingshot coupe. He began with a 15.503 at 103.52mph Saturday and later recorded a new Personal Best ET and Speed of 14.171 at 103.67mph. He dialled in at 14.50 for Sunday's rounds, and red lit in Round 1, with a 15.756 at 95/11mph. He then posted 14.649 at 101.39mph in the second round and a 14.138 at 101.01mph in the third, another PB ET, which proved to be the “Most Improved ET” for the Wild Bunch with a .361 betterment over his previous PB of 14.499. Congratulations, Pedro!
Congratulations to Ray and the Dog's Bollocks team on their first win of the season and congrats to Adz, Terry and Chris for their Top 4 places. Well done to all the Wild Bunch on some exceptionally close racing – the competition was sooo close, that after the second round, the Top 4 contenders were separated by only .006 (on aggregate)!!!!! Another excellent show! It was a great event where we were really lucky with, and enjoyed the weather! Many thanks to all the marshals, officials and track crew at Shakey for their hard work as always, especially in the heat on Sunday.

We are now really looking forward to the fourth Wild Bunch Series round and sixth Real Steel Series round of 2011 at the “Mini Showdown” at Shakey on July 9th & 10th! It's our annual fancy dress party too! We should have another really big field of Wild Bunch for that one!!
