The weather forecast was pretty poor for the whole weekend, so we hoped we could get some racing in at some point! Especially as we had our largest field for years, 21 Wild Bunch cars! Saturday dawned grey and soon turned to rain, which looked like it was there to stay, until the clouds cleared, and the marshals and officials worked on the track until it opened at around 3pm, with the Wild Bunch being the first out on track! We also got a second run that day, and a total of 11 Wild Bunch cars took place in the first ever Santa Pod Cacklefest! It was a great show by the Bunch! Sunday started wet and cool, and though the track opened late morning, there was some rain just after the first pair of Wild Bunch ran. The rest of the Bunch waited and were rewarded with the completion of the round, with a total of 19 cars participating. Sadly, due to rain delays and a late shower whilst we were queued up for our second run, we only got one round of competition completed. We had been lucky to get any racing at all, thanks to the hard work of the track crew! 5 drivers ran Personal Best ET's and 3 ran PB Speeds, despite the headwind that prevailed all weekend.
WB 2 Warren Rowlands was in his third drive of the season in the seventh Wild Bunch event of the year for the “Destiny's Angel” altered. Warren had to sit out Saturday's runs as he spent the day at hospital waiting with girlfriend Sarah, who thankfully emerged okay after an accident Friday. So Warren dialled in blind for Sunday's round, at 9.80. He promptly went out and ran a new Personal Best E.T. of 9.749 at 139.83mph. He just missed out the Top 4, finishing in 5th place overall.
WB 3 Adam Price was in his seventh event of the season with the Team Gridlock “Go Hard or Go Home!!!” Topolino altered. Adz began the weekend with a 9.358 at 135.30mph pass. He followed this with a 9.447 at 134.05mph. Adam also took part in his first ever Cacklefest, which he thoroughly enjoyed!! On the evening Val and Dex had arranged a special surprise stag and hen party for Adam and Lorraine, who are getting married in a few weeks’ time! They really enjoyed this! The team dialled in at 9.39 for Sunday, and Adam recorded a 9.348 at 135.71mph, to finish in 3rd place overall for the weekend, his sixth Top 4 placing of the season!!! He was also awarded the “Best Burnout” Spot Prize by the commentators, his fourth of the year! The team had another great weekend! Adz is still leading the Wild Bunch Series, and is in 2nd place in Real Steel.
WB 4 Sarah Howells was back out racing, in her first drive of the year in the Team Dog's Bollocks “RamRaider” slingshot. Sarah was chuffed to be back in the hotseat and ran passes of 9.387 at 135.34mph and 9.411 at 141.25mph on the Saturday. She also took part in the Cacklefest on the Saturday evening. The team dialled in at their old faithful 9.33 for Sunday. Sarah posted a 9.482 at 141.23mph and finished in 9th place. The team are 4th in both the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series.
WB 6 ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was in his seventh event of the year with the “Backdraft” slingshot. His first run Saturday was a 9.277 at 139.85mph, somewhat off his recent pace. He made some changes and improved to a 9.098 at 142.37mph on his next run. Chris and the team had been using his 1964 GMC Suburban to push the slingshot to the track all weekend, and when Chris took part in the Cacklefest Saturday evening, they used this to push down the ‘old’ fire-up road. Chris was real chuffed to recreate this, as the car had done so as “Malibu Express” back in 1969! The next morning the team dialled in at 9.08 for the round, and Chris recorded a 9.157 at 142.03mph, to finish in 7th place. Chris and the team were also chuffed when the commentators awarded them the WB “Spirit of Nostalgia” Spot Prize!! Chris is now in 3rd place in both the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series.
WB 8 Mark Coulsell was back in the Limited Funz Racing “Ballbreaker” slingshot, and the team used Dad Ian's 40's pick up truck as push vehicle all weekend. (It had recently been painted in matching black and orange to co-ordinate nicely with everything the team has!). Mark's first pass Saturday was a 9.629 at 129.07mph. He followed this with a much better 9359 at 134.52mph. Mark and the team also took part in Saturday night's Cacklefest, using Ian's truck to push the slingshot down the old return road. Mark and the team dialled in at 9.40 on Sunday, and Mark recorded a great new Personal Best E.T. and speed of 9.166 at 141.70mph, his first time ever over the 140mph mark. Congratulations to the whole team! Being quite a way under Dial-in, Mark finished in 11th place overall, but didn’t really mind one bit! The Limited Funz team were also thrilled to be awarded the WB “Best Appearing Team” Spot Prize by the commentators.
WB 11 saw Dave Williams also in his seventh event of the season with his “Green with Envy” altered. He had made some tuning changes recently, and his first run Saturday was a test pass of 12.095 at 110.56mph. He then improved to an 11.928 at 113.64mph on his second run. Linda dialled him in at 11.65 for Sunday, and Dave ran an 11.979 at 112.79mph, to finish in 13th place overall for the event.
WB 13 Claire Vize is a newcomer to the Wild Bunch with her “Brain Shaker” altered, and this was her first event with the Bunch. Claire and partner Ash had recently made repairs to the steering on the car, and hoped that it would run well this weekend. Her first pass Saturday was an 11.242 at 121.86mph. She followed this with an 11.418 at 121.74mph. For Sunday's round, they dialled in at 11.20, and Claire went straight out and posted the WB “Best Reaction” of Race-day, with a .101, and also recorded the Wild Bunch “Closest to Dial-in” on this pass, with an 11.211 at 122.20mph! And with only one round of WB competition, this meant that she took the win on her first ever try!! Well done Claire!! She also won a jacket and £50 prize posted by Tiki Munki's Scot Durrant from ‘Scottie's Vehicle Transportation’! (Thanks to him for this great prize!) And welcome to the Wild Bunch Claire!
WB 17 saw Gina Rumble's fourth drive of the season with the Wild Bunch in the “Tiki Munki” slingshot coupe, in its sixth WB event this season. Gina's first run Saturday was a 14.439 at 59.74mph, as she had to slow at the top end, due to a minor oil leak. Gina did a great job of getting the car stopped safely, as she had been getting covered with a fine spray of oil. Well done, Gina! She had a much better run later that day, recording a 13.605 at 93.13mph. Gina and the team took part in the Cacklefest that evening and were the third team to push down the old return road, using their 1954 Chevy! On Sunday morning, the team dialled in at 13.50, and Gina had some problems on the run, posting a 15.782 at 85.71mph. She finished in 17th place overall.
WB 19 Wayne Colliver was back out with the Bunch for the first time this season, with his “Spud” slingshot. The team had other commitments and were not able to arrive until Sunday morning, but soon set up camp and started preparing the car, dialling in blind at 13.50 for the round. Unfortunately, they experienced problems with their fuel pump, and could not make it to the WB first round. We hope to see the team out more regularly next year, when they will also be joined by brother Antony's new slingshot. Best of luck to them all!
WB 25 Terry Clifford was yet another driver in his seventh event this year, with his “Ratcatcher Resurrection” slingshot. Terry's first run of the weekend was a 10.868 at 121.73mph. He improved by over three tenths on his next pass, posting a 10.544 at 124.91mph. Terry took part in the Cacklefest that evening and the whole team really enjoyed it! The team dialled in at 10.45 for Sunday's round, and Terry recorded a 10.574 at 123.78mph. He finished in 8th place overall for the event. Terry is now in 2nd place in the Wild Bunch Series and is still leading the Real Steel Series.
WB 35 Dick Sharp was back in the “Dorset Horn” altered, after acquiring a new fuel pump for the car. This soon proved to be the cure for their recent fuel delivery problems, as Dick was back in the 9's on his first run of the weekend, a 9.949 at 135.33mph. He improved again with his second pass, which was a 9.696 at 137.33mph, getting near to his personal best with this incarnation of the altered. The team dialled in at 9.60 for Sunday, and Dick recorded a 9.857 at 136.87mph, to finish 12th overall.
WB 41 saw Tom Larman in his second Wild Bunch event within a week with his altered “The Ferret”. Tom made two runs Saturday, with the first being an 11.462 at 113.76mph, and the second also in the 11's. The whole team were really chuffed to take part in the Cacklefest, with Tom's son Craig doing the driving duties! The team dialled in at an optimistic 10.70 for the round on Sunday, and Tom posted an 11.238 at 114.63mph. He finished in 16th place overall and had a great weekend!
WB 63 saw Rebecca and Harriet Preston back in their second Wild Bunch event of the season in their “Boadicea” Topolino altered. Unfortunately, due to work commitments, they could not arrive until Sunday morning, so dialled in blind at 12.00 even. They posted a 14.503 at 82.72mph, and finished in 18th place overall. We hope to see a lot more of the team next season. Best of luck to them!
WB 65 saw the debut of Ian Turburville's stunning red and white striped methanol-injected slingshot, “Mr Spokehead II”. Ian and friends had been working hard to finish the car and make it out for Dragstalgia, and they did just that, having fired the car up for the first time the week before. Ian spent most Saturday in the pits, checking things out, and made it out to take part in the Cacklefest that evening! He dialled in blind at 10.00 even for Sunday, but due to doing more checks, did not make it out to take part in the Wild Bunch round. He did however later record a 13-second checkout pass, so many congratulations to him on his debut with the car. We hope to see him out a lot more soon!!
WB 69 Alan Loten was another newcomer in his second WB event within a week, with his “Paranoia” altered. Alan was still in testing mode, as there were a lot of new things to learn and checkout on the car. He started the weekend with a 14.957 at 89.78mph, a much higher speed again than that at the Mini Showdown. He later recorded a new Personal Best E.T. and speed with the new configuration, of 12.772 at 104.71mph, doing some match-racing with his old sparring partner from the 80's, Dave Gibbons and his “Rough Diamond” altered. The team dialled in at 11.00 even for Sunday, and Alan posted a 16.256 at 100.38mph, still checking things out. He finished in 19th place for the weekend. And we look forward to watching him get a handle on the car, which he is enjoying all over again!!
WB 73 was the second WB event of the season for Mike Couch in his “Flathead Frenzy” slingshot. He started the weekend well, taking a second off his previous PB, with a 13.017 at 99.21mph. He improved even more again on his second pass Saturday, running another Personal Best ET and Speed of 12.404 at 102.17mph, his first time over the ton. Mike dialled in at 12.40 for the round on Sunday, and ran a 12.916 at 97.51mph, to finish in 14th place overall for the weekend.
WB 74 was Simon Williams’ second event of the season with the Wild Bunch, with his “Pure Nostalgia” slingshot. Simon had problems before his first pass on Saturday, and had to be pushed back, but he made up for this on his second outing of the day, recording a 9.485 at 135.24mph. Simon took part in the evening's Cacklefest and really enjoyed it! He dialled in at 9.30 on Sunday morning, and ran a 9.474 at 137.29mph, to finish in 10th place overall.
WB 78 was Keith Crampton's fifth event of the year with the Bunch, with his “Soultown Shaker” slingshot. Keith started the weekend with a pass of 11.947 at 112.49mph. He later posted a 12.648 at 112.34mph. Keith took part in the Cacklefest on the Saturday night, and had a ball doing so! He dialled in at 11.90 for the round on Sunday, and recorded a 12.423 at 112.50mph, finishing in 15th place overall for the event. Keith and team were really chuffed when they were given the honour of being chosen by the commentators as the “Best Appearing Team” out of all of the teams participating in “Dragstalgia”! The icing on the cake was when the slingshot was also chosen by the commentators as the “Best Appearing Car” of the Bunch! Well done, Keith and team!
WB 91 Bob Hawkins was in his sixth event of the season with the Wild Bunch in his “Time Traveller” slingshot. He had been testing some settings at previous events, and been recording low 9-second passes, so he was really pleased when his first run of the weekend netted an 8.879 at 149.19mph. His next pass Saturday was a new Personal Best E.T. of 8.734 at 149.68mph, which also proved to be the “Quickest E.T.” for the Bunch for the whole weekend. Bob dialled in at 8.75 on Sunday, and was chuffed to run an 8.795 at 149.06mph, to finish in 4th place overall. His first Top 4 finish since the first event of this season.
WB 194 saw the Wild Bunch debut of Dave Gibbons with his “Rough Diamond” altered. Though Dave is a newcomer to the Bunch, he is by no means new to the sport, but has only recently made a comeback after some 27 years away from the sport! He was enjoying match racing old opponent Alan Loten in the “Paranoia” altered. Dave's only run Saturday was a 9.466 at 141.59mph. He sat out the next round, as he wanted to take part in the “Flame Burnout” demos on the evening, after the Cacklefest. Dave had performed flame burnouts in the 80's, and was looking forward to doing one again with the 4 other cars participating. Dave did a great job, which photos on the internet have shown! Though his turtle deck was a little blistered afterwards, he thoroughly enjoyed it. Dave dialled in at 8.83 for Sunday's round, and recorded an 8.890 at 145.77mph, finishing in 6th place.
WB 258 Dave Ward recently re-joined the Wild Bunch with the gorgeous “Rampage” funny car, alongside co-driver Dave King. Dave King made a couple of runs on the Saturday, with the first being a checkout 12.339 at 119.82mph, getting used to the car. His second pass was a huge improvement, with a 9.959 at 132.57mph. The team also took part in the Cacklefest on the evening, and ran the car for a long time, really enjoying the experience. Dave Ward took over the hotseat on Sunday morning, and dialled in blind at 9.80. This proved to be a great estimate, as Dave recorded a 9.816 at 133.71mph, to finish in 2nd place overall! A great result! We hear they thoroughly enjoyed themselves racing with the Bunch over the weekend. Well done Dave and Dave, and welcome back to the Wild Bunch!!
Big Congratulations to Claire and team on their first ever win! And to Dave, Adam and Bob for their Top 4 placings. And congratulations to all the Wild Bunch teams on a fantastic show! We had so many positive comments from people throughout the weekend about the quality of our cars and teams and everyone was impressed by the size of the field! Well done everyone, you really did yourselves proud!!

It was a great event, despite the weather, and we hope it goes from strength to strength. It is fantastic to have another nostalgia event on the drag racing calendar. Many thanks to the marshals and officials and track crew at Santa Pod for their hard work as always. Through their efforts they really increased the amount of racing which took place, in the face of such poor weather.

We are now really looking forward to the eighth Real Steel Series round of 2011 at the “Open Sports Nationals” at Shakey on August Bank Holiday, 27th – 29th August! This will be the season finale of the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series. We should have another really big field for that one!!
