The June Shootout was the fourth event of the WB season. It was the second round of the Wild Bunch Series, and Real Steel Series Round 4, and there was a field of 13 Wild Bunch cars participating: 6 Altereds and 7 Slingshots (including 1 coupe).

| The weather forecast was predicted to be warmish and dry for the weekend! Saturday dawned cool, cloudy and with a headwind, and became warmer mid afternoon. Many teams managed to get in around 3 runs throughout the day, with some having as many as 8 runs! There was a lot of track time available! On Saturday night, the Wild Bunch had our annual fancy dress party with the theme being popstars, musicians and band. We had the Beach Boys (Team Ferret), Simply Red with Ed Sheeran and Jason Donovan for support acts (Team Ratcatcher), Sonny and Cher (Chris & Claire), plus a later version of Cher (Miss B!), and the Spice Girls (Mark & Nicole, Joey & Kim). And there was even someone who looked remarkably like Jimmy Page! The night chilled off quickly but a great time was had by all. Sunday dawned dry and cloudy again, with a bit of a headwind. We completed all 4 rounds of competition, which again was very close! Only 1 driver ran a PB this weekend. | |
| WB 1 | Adam Price was in his fourth event of the season with the Team Gridlock 'Go Hard or Go Home!!!' Topolino altered. Wife Lorraine had been in hospital during the previous week, so we were all very happy to see her back out, and on the mend! The team had had the engine and box out between rounds, trying to sort out the transbrake. Adz began Saturday with a checkout 9.866 pass at 113.96mph. He then ran consistent passes of 9.48, 9.485/142.11 and 9.450/142.14, as well as another close 9.50/143. The team dialled in at 9.47 for Sunday's rounds, and Adam's first round pass was a 9.571 at 140.43mph. He followed this with a 'Closest to Dial-in' of the Bunch of 9.472 at 141.02mph. He then ran a 9.446 at 141.60mph in the third round and a 9.511 at 140.19mph in the fourth. Adam was just .006 outside the Top 4, and finished in 5th place overall. Adam is now in 3rd place in the Wild Bunch Series and 2nd place in the Real Steel Series. |
| WB 2 | saw the second event of the season for Tom Larman and team with 'The Ferret' altered. Tom and team were very busy on the Saturday, and put in 6 runs: 10.763/118.87, 10.650/120.07, 10.607/118.92, 11.960/119.18, 10.656/119.09 and 10.630/118.82. The team deliberated the Dial-in and opted for a 10.65 on Sunday. Tom began with a 10.718 at 119.09mph. He followed this with a closer 10.627 at 118.85mph and an even closer 10.633 at 119.33mph in the third round. His fourth round pass was a 10.619 at 124.09mph, and he finished in 2nd place overall! Another great result! To top it all, Tom was voted the Wild Bunch 'Driver's Choice'! Tom is still leading the Wild Bunch Series. |
| WB 4 | Andrew Murphy was taking his second turn of the year in the hotseat of the 'B-Sting' altered. He had a grand total of 8 runs on Saturday, beginning with a 10.602 at 127.13mph. The following runs were: 10.495/128.62, 10.555/127.29, 10.704/125.53, 10.493/128.09, 10.524.127.12, 10.542/127.06 and 11.922/83.47, the latter with a slight electrical problem. This was soon sorted and the team dialled in at 10.50 for the rounds on Sunday. Andrew began with a 10.612 at 127.40mph. His second round pass was a 10.818 at 125.17mph, and his third round pass was an identical ET of 10.818 at 126.43mph, with a 'Best Reaction' for the Bunch, of .064 on this run. But the team diagnosed a problem, so had to park the car for the rest of the day. We’re sure they will soon have this sorted and be right back on form. |
| WB 6 | ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was in his fourth event of the year with the 'Backdraft' slingshot. He made three very consistent passes on the Saturday, beginning with an 8.932 at 147.88mph. He followed this with and 8.920 at 147.93mph, and an 8.945 at 146.94mph. The team discussed the Dial-in and eventually chose an 8.92 for the rounds on Sunday. Chris’ first pass was a 9.006 at 147.18mph. He then ran much closer to Dial with an 8.911 at 147.40mph. He was even quicker in the third round, posting an 8.856 at 148.25mph. His fourth round run was very close, with an 8.917 at 147.58mph and Chris finished in 4th place overall. He is now in 4th place in the Wild Bunch Series and 3rd place in the Real Steel Series. |
| WB 11 | saw Dave Williams in his first event of the season with his 'Green with Envy' altered. He made 4 runs on the Saturday, including: 11.419/114.24, 11.300/115.42, 11.212/115.37 and 11.294/115.04. He and Linda dialled in at 11.26 on Sunday, and Dave started well, with an 11.302 at 114.94mph. He followed this with a similar 11.308 at 114.42mph. He then ran quicker with an 11.231 at 115.19mph. His fourth round run was a new Personal Best ET of 11.118 at 116.40mph. (Dave was the only Wild Buncher to run a PB this weekend). The team were also awarded the 'Best Altered' Spot Prize by the commentators, so a great start to their season. |
| WB 17 | saw Gina Rumble's second Wild Bunch event of the season in here and Scottie's 'Tiki Munki' slingshot coupe. Gina made several passes on Saturday morning, mostly in the low 13-second range. She and Scottie dialled in at 13.07 for the rounds on Sunday, and Gina's first run was a 13.469 at 96.09mph. In the second round, she ran a better 13.282 at 96.26mph. She followed this with even better runs of 13.217 at 96.35mph in the third round and 13.139 at 97.16mph in the fourth. She finished in 7th place overall for the weekend. The team have diagnosed a clutch problem, which no doubt they will be able to fix in time for the Nostalgias. |
| WB 25 | Terry Clifford was in his fourth event of the season in the 'Ratcatcher Resurrection' slingshot, fresh from some excellent PB's at the last round. Terry made 3 passes on the Saturday, including a 9.3 and a 9.4, and was now running pretty straight. The team dialled in at 9.33 on Sunday, and Terry started well, recording a 9.395 at 148.79mph on his first pass. He then ran a quicker 9.238 at 148.88mph in the second round, and an even quicker 9.203 at 148.91mph in the third. He had a problem in stage in the fourth round, and pulled a red light, posting a 9.364 at 149.11mph on the run, so then not being eligible for a placing. The team still had another great weekend with their strong-running car which is now firmly in the low 9's! |
| WB 35 | Dick Sharp was back in the 'Dorset Horn' altered, for his third event of the season. He made a total of 5 runs on the Saturday, and was doing some tuning: 9.907/133.82, 10.512/133.33, 9.925/133.55, 10.570/126.38 and 10.337/131.70. The team dialled in at 9.90 on Sunday, and Dick recorded a 10.262 at 130.08mph on his first round run. He second pass was way better, with a 9.569 at 138.34mph! He then posted a 10.025 at 139.60mph in the third round, but son and crew member Dan had to leave early, so the team did not take part in the fourth round. Hope they can repeat the form from the second round at the next event, as this was definitely going in the right direction. |
| WB 39 | John Dalrymple and team were in their second Wild Bunch event of the season with their slingshot. One of the team member's drove the car in testing on Saturday, and John dialled in at 11.85 for Sunday. His first round run was a 12.711 at 96.78mph, somewhat off the usual pace. The team went down for a run between rounds, but there was some smoke at the top end. Back in the pits, they realised there was a crack in the timing cover! So unfortunately could not take part in the rest of the rounds. Hope they can get this fixed soon and be back out racing! |
| WB 67 | was Darryl Howell's third Wild Bunch outing of the season with the 'Chemical Reaction' slingshot. Darryl made a few passes on Saturday, including an 11.218 at 115.27mph, and a better 10.7-second run. The team are still chasing an intermittent problem, and were trying to find a gremlin. They dialled in at 10.50 for Sunday, and Darryl slowed to a 12.994 at 98.61mph in the first round. Back in the pits they worked on the car, trying different things, but then did not take part in the other rounds. Hope they can diagnose the problem quickly, and that we see Darryl return to his high 9-second form again soon! |
| WB 69 | Alan Loten was also in his third Wild Bunch event of the year, in his 'Paranoia' altered. He made 3 runs on Saturday, beginning with a 10-second pass, followed by a 13-second pass, with problems with the gear selector. He and Steve then made temporary repairs to this and Alan then improved on his third run of the day, to a 9.579 at 135.83mph. They dialled in at 9.50 for Sunday. Alan's first pass was a puzzling 10.274 at 126.35mph. His second round run was similar, a 10.234/126.27. But then the car improved again to a 9.831 at 126.71mph in the third round. Alan then posted a 10.271 at 119.60mph in the last round and finished in 8th place overall. The good news is that he should be able to get a new part machined for the gear selection. Alan was awarded the 'Best Engineered' car of the Bunch by the scrutineers. |
| WB 78 | was Keith Crampton's fourth event of the year with the Bunch, with his 'Soultown Shaker' slingshot, and he was leading the Real Steel Series. Keith made a few runs Saturday, including an 11.3-second pass. Wife Christine was crewing as well as the Marras who were again assisting. Crewman Ian arrived Sunday morning, and the team dialled in at 11.29. Keith's first round pass was an 11.306 at 114.09mph and he took the lead at this point. His second was an 11.266 at 114.43mph, and he maintained his lead. He next two passes were within a thousandth of this run, either way, with an 11.267/113.63 and an 11.265/114.42! With this consistency, Keith earned his first ever Wild Bunch win! Many congratulations to Keith and all the team! He is now in 2nd place in the Wild Bunch Series and is still leading the Real Steel Series. Fair play! |
| WB 91 | saw the third Wild Bunch event of the season for Bob Hawkins in the 'Time Traveller' slingshot. Bob made 4 passes on the Saturday, and got quicker each time: 8.341/157.29, 8.297/160.21, 8.253/160.50 and 8.206/159.52, which was the quickest Wild Bunch run of the weekend. Bob and Tom dialled in at 8.30 for Sunday's rounds. Bob started off with an 8.246 at 161.64mph in Round 1, which proved to be fastest of the Bunch for the event. He then ran an 8.270 at 160.81mph followed by a similar 8.280 at 161.33mph. His last run of the day was an 8.347 at 159.30mph, and Bob finished in 3rd place overall. He was also awarded the 'Best Slingshot' Spot Prize by the commentators. Bob is in 4th place in the Real Steel Series. |
| Big Congratulations to Keith and the whole extended team on the win! And to Tom, Bob and Chris and teams for their Top 4 placings. Well done to all the Wild Bunch teams on some more good close racing and a great show. Congratulations to Dave who was the solo PB of the weekend. And very best wishes to Tom Hawkins, who was taken ill at the end of the event. We were glad to hear he was soon on the mend later that day!
It was another really good event, with more good weather. Many thanks to all the marshals and officials and track and fire crews at Shakey for their hard work as always. We are now really looking forward to the third Wild Bunch Series round, fifth Real Steel Series round and first Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Car Series round of 2013 at the Nostalgia Nationals at Shakey on June 22nd & 23rd! Hoping for similar dry weather and an even bigger field of Wild Bunch for that one!! | |
