The weather forecast fulfilled its promise with 2 days of glorious sunshine and hot weather, especially on the Saturday! And it was pretty much ‘Spirit of ‘76’ weather! Highlights included the third ever Santa Pod Cacklefest where 3 Wild Bunch cars took part and 2 took part in the fire burnouts. There were backup girls a-plenty as well as push cars and great team uniforms and pit displays and it was a fantastic show from the Bunch! And we ran all four rounds of competition once again Sunday! Over the weekend 9 drivers ran Personal Best ET's and 3 ran PB Speeds. It was a brilliant event!!
WB 1 Adam Price was in his sixth event of the season with the Team Gridlock Go Hard or Go Home!!! Topolino altered. The team had run at the ‘Race Retro’ event the Sunday before, and turned up on the Friday to set up their pits, as Adam had to leave mid-morning to go and work on a wedding photoshoot! He and Lorraine then arrived back early Saturday morning. But he had to leave midday Saturday to go and work on another wedding photoshoot! So he put in one run before he left, a 9.535 at 140.39mph! Lorraine was again performing backup girl duties and had a special outfit. The team dialled in at 9.45 for Sunday, and Adam began well with a 9.423 at 142.49mph, and a Wild Bunch Best Reaction of .040. His second round run was even closer, a 9.460 at 140.74mph. He posted a 9.500 at 141.58mph in the third, and then a quicker 9.353 at 143.38mph in the fourth. He finished in 3rd place overall. Adam is now in 2nd place in both the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series and is leading the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series!
WB 2 saw Tom Larman in his fourth Wild Bunch event this year with The Ferret altered, which was celebrating its 30th birthday since being built by the original owners. Tom entered the Peak Performance test day on the Friday, and made a total of 8 runs! He made several passes Saturday, including a 10.569/121.74, a 10.489/123.06 and a 10.530/121.89. The team dialled in at 10.50 for the rounds on Sunday. Tom started well, with a 10.555 at 121.23mph. He followed this with a closer 10.476 at 120.58mph. His third round pass was a 10.530 and his last run of the day was his closest, a 10.520 at 117.76mph. Tom finished in 2nd place overall. He is now leading the Wild Bunch Series, 3rd in the Real Steel Series and equal 4th in the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series.
WB 4 saw Andrew Murphy in his third event of the season with the B-Sting altered. The team had been working on fixing the problem experienced at the Super Pull event. Andrew's first pass Saturday was a checkout 11.024 at 122.72mph. He then ran a quicker 10.734 at 123.74mph. But back in the pits between rounds, the team discovered that they had broken a push rod. And were forced to sit out the rest of the event. Such a shame! Hope the damage is limited and they can fix it and be back out for the next round. Best of luck to them!
WB 6 ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was in his sixth event of the season in the Backdraft slingshot, and at his third Dragstalgia event. The team had brought up their ’64 Suburban to act as push car all weekend, and Claire had some special new backup girl outfits, a silver/gold minidress complete with silver knee high boots, and another outfit of red shorts, white vest top and white knee high boots. Chris began Saturday well with a strong wheelying 8.846 at 148.68mph. His next pass was another 8, an 8.999 at 145.76mph in the hottest part of the day. But on his third run of the day, the car did not pick the wheels up at all on launch, and then did not change up into second. Chris saw smoke and pulled over to the side and coasted through the finish line. He suspected that the gearbox had broken. Such a huge shame for the team who were enjoying the event so much! Plus Claire caught a case of heatstroke Saturday afternoon. And they did not get to take part in their planned push start for the Cacklefest due to the breakage. But no doubt Chris will have the breakage fixed quickly and in plenty of time for the next event! The team still had a great weekend overall and loved the event!
WB 17 Scot Durrant was back in the hotseat of the Tiki Munki slingshot coupe for his first drive of the year in the team's fourth event this season. They had brought up their ’53 Chevy to use as push and tow car all weekend. And wife Gina and niece Nicole had some very period 50's dungaree outfits, and were on duty as staging girls. Scottie began the weekend well with a new Personal Best ET of 12.993 at 97.93mph, his first ever 12-second run! He later ran a 13.817 at 92.75mph, followed by better passes of 13.061/96.09 and 13.142/97.71. They were one of two Wild Bunch teams who took part in the push starts for the Cacklefest on the Saturday evening, and thoroughly enjoyed it! Scottie dialled in at 13.05 on Sunday, and started very well, with a 13.043 at 98.12mph, which put him in 2nd place at that point. He followed this with another good pass of 13.065 at 96.68mph, and an even better one of 13.058 at 96.88mph. Very consistent! His fourth round pass was a 13.129 at 97.09mph. Scottie won the event! The team's first Top placing of the year. So big congratulations to all of them! And to top it all, Gina and Nicole were awarded the Wild Bunch Best Backup Girls Spot Prize by the commentators! Scottie and Gina are now in 4th place in the Wild Bunch Series and 2nd place in the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series.
WB 19 Wayne Colliver was back out with the Bunch for the first time this season, with his Spud slingshot. The team had now installed a Chevy engine, and fired the car up the week before and were really keen to see how it would run. Wayne put in a couple of checkout passes Saturday with the first a 22-second run. The team dialled in at 15.00 even for Sunday. Wayne did not make the first round as he was fixing some problems, and changed the rocker cover gaskets. He did make the second round, however he stopped on track and did not record a time. Wayne came out for the third round and recorded a 19.796 at 68.44mph. The whole team were chuffed to be able to get down the track and make some progress with the tune-up. Hope to see them back out soon!
WB 25 Terry Clifford was raring to go in the Ratcatcher Resurrection slingshot for his sixth event of the season. The Ratcatcher Racing team had very kindly sponsored all our trophies for this event! So many thanks to them all! This weekend, wife Ruth and daughter-in-law Rachael were on backup girl duty and had some special outfits, with red tops and black skirt or shorts, and looked very 50's. Rachael even had her red parasol on the line to keep cool! Terry began the weekend very well with a new Personal Best ET of 9.010 at 149.57mph. He then followed this with his first ever 8-second run, an 8.951 at 149.15mph! Congratulations to Terry and all the team! He was real consistent on the next pass, running another 8 at 8.990 at 148.62mph. He later ran a 9.6-second pass. Terry and team took part in the push start for the Cacklefest and really enjoyed it! On Sunday, the team dialled in at 8.99, their lowest ever. Terry had a bit of a wayward launch and recorded a 9.899 at 147.68mph. He then posted a better 9.245 at 148.13mph. His third round run was a strong 9.022 at 150.06mph, and his fourth round pass was a 9.400 at 148.65mph, but he had redlit, so did not get a placing. The team were well chuffed with their first 8's and had a brilliant weekend!
WB 33 Mark Mills was running in his first ever ‘Dragstalgia’ event with his Xenomorph altered, fresh from some excellent PB's at the Nostalgia Nationals. Mark started well, with another Personal Best ET of 9.111 at 130.64mph. He followed this with another PB of 9.107 at 131.80mph. And on his last run Saturday, he recorded his first ever 8-second pass, a really strong 8.742 at 152.14mph, deep into the 8's! Congratulations to Mark and the whole team on this achievement! Mark dialled in at 8.99 for Sunday's round. He started very well, with an 8.989 at 117.30mph, just one thousandth off Dial and earning the Closest to Dial-in Spot Prize. He then recorded a 9.102 at 117.31mph in the second round and a 9.308 in the third. He was back in the 8's for the last round, posting an 8.882 at 124.76mph. Mark finished in 6th place overall and had a great weekend!
WB 35 Dick Sharp was back in the Dorset Horn altered for his fifth event of the season and was continuing the team's 40th Anniversary celebrations. Dick began Saturday with a solid 9.553 at 138.41mph. He followed this with a better 9.520 at 140.71mph He then recorded a 9.647 at 137.28mph. The team later took part in the evening's Cacklefest and really enjoyed it. Dick dialled in at 9.52 on Sunday and posted a 9.799 at 134.41mph in the first round. He then went quicker, with a 9.677 at 135.26mph in the second round. In Round 3, he recorded a new Personal Best ET of 9.361 at 139.95mph. Well done, Dick! But in the fourth round, he had problems staging and rolled out twice. The starter kindly allowed him to re-stage, but the altered lurched forward at the hit. Dick then stopped but got going again, and recorded a 26 second run at 136.19mph. This put him in 10th place overall. Dick and the whole team were awarded the Spirit of Nostalgia Spot Prize by the commentators, another fine and well-deserved tribute for them in their 40th anniversary year!
WB 62 Kev and Harry Preston were running with the Wild Bunch with their Valkyrie blown altered for the first time this season. The team had sold their Boadicea altered which Harry and Bex had been driving, and Kev had installed a new engine in Valkyrie so that the girls could share the running of the altered. Kev and Haz made some checkout passes on Saturday, and this included an 11.904 at 103.03 and an 11.210 at 124.88mph, which was promising. Kev was planning to take part in the Fire Burnouts Saturday night and got lined up. But he had trouble getting the car to idle properly so erred on the side of caution and did not carry on. On Sunday the team dialled in at 10.70, but sadly did not take part in the rounds as there was still some teething trouble with the new engine.
WB 67 saw Darryl Howells in his fifth event with the Wild Bunch this year in his Chemical Reaction slingshot. Darryl had taken part in the Friday Test Day after making some alterations to the fuel system, including new fuel lines. The team found an issue with the barrel valve setting and had also put this right, so were hoping they had cured their recent problems. They indeed had, and on Darryl's first run Friday, he recorded a new PB ET and Speed of 9.478 at 140mph! Congratulations Dar!! Fair play! He made two more runs in the 9.49's that day. During the whole weekend, Sarah was wearing a powder blue mini dress (identical to her Mum's 60's wedding dress), plus white knee-high lace-up boots and a fluffy 60's hat, for her duties as backup girl, and she looked fab! On Saturday, Darryl began with another solid 9.560 at 139.83mph. He then ran a 9.601 at 141.26mph, a new Personal Best Speed. He then ran another Personal Best ET of 9.389 at 140.40mph! Fair shout! Darryl dialled in at 9.38 for Sunday. He began with a 9.442 at 139.52mph, and posted a 9.644 at 136.57mph in the second round. His third round pass was a 9.550 at 138.54mph. Due to the heat of the day, his engine was still red hot, so the team decided to sit out the fourth round. It was great to see that they had now cured their problems and that Darryl is now firmly in the mid 9's! Well done to all the team! Darryl was awarded the Best Wheelstand of the whole event and Sarah was awarded the Best Backup Girl of the whole event.
WB 68 saw Mick Gleadow out with the Wild Bunch for his first event of the season in his Jurassic Parts slingshot. Mick had some problems Saturday, and did not make a pass in the Wild Bunch sessions. He then dialled in at 10.40 for Sunday, but again did not run in any Wild Bunch rounds. Hope Mick can get everything sorted and be back out at the track soon!
WB 69 Alan Loten was back out with his Paranoia altered for his fifth event of the year. He and Steve had recently had problems with the MSD unit on the car and were running off their usual pace. They made some adjustments and Alan began the weekend with a 10.100 at 129.82mph. He then had problems on his second pass, posting a 14.640 at 58.06mph. He did not run in the third session, but then recorded a strong 9.50-second pass in the fourth, so right back on form! Alan dialled in at 9.50 for Sunday and began the day with a promising 9.631 at 134.42mph. He then ran 9.800 at 127.26mph in the second round. He ran better in Round 3, posting a 9.667 at 132.18mph, and the recorded his best pass for some time in the fourth round, a 9.481 at 138.13mph. Alan is having the MSD reconditioned between rounds, so hope he will be running these numbers consistently at the next event. He finished in 7th place overall. And was awarded the Best Appearing Car Spot Prize by the commentators. A great achievement in such a big field of well turned out Wild Bunch cars!
WB 72 Dave ‘Sag’ Southworth was in his second event of 2013 with the Bunch with his Daddy Cool rear-engined dragster, and it was his first ever trip to Santa Pod with the dragster! The car was fresh from some PB's on its last outing at Shakey. The team had been having problems with their mag, and ended up missing the first three sessions on Saturday. Sag then recorded a 10.40-second pass in the fourth session. The team then dialled in at 9.50 for Sunday. Sag began the day with a 9.990 at 131.81mph, so already an improvement on the previous day. In the second round, he ran a new Personal Best ET and his first ever 8-second pass, with an 8,948 at 141.28mph! Big congratulations to Sag and the whole family and team on this great achievement, in their 35+year career! Fantastic! They were all over the moon! Sag then recorded another good pass of 9.103 at 136.97mph in the third round, but a small breakage after this put the team out for the weekend. But they had a brilliant weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it all!
WB 73 was the second Wild Bunch event of the season for Mike Couch in his Flathead Frenzy 2 slingshot. He began the weekend with a promising 10.052 at 134.06mph. He followed this with a 10.153 at a new Personal Best Speed of 135.63mph. He later ran an 11.692 at 103.34mph, in the heat of the day. Mike made some tuning adjustments to the fuel system, and dialled in at 10.05 for Sunday. His first round pass was a 10.543 at 122.09mph. And he was really off the pace in the next round, with a 12.868 at 82.87mph. He then made some more fuelling changes and ran a better 11.016 at 111.81mph in Round 3, and another improvement of 10.760 at 115mph in the fourth round. Mike finished in 8th place overall. That 9 will just have to wait for the next event! Best of luck, Mike!
WB 75 saw the first ever Wild Bunch event for Andy Jackson in his Unfinished Business rear-engined side-winder dragster. The car was built in 1972 as the Econorail by Ian Fraser, and Andy bought it in 1986 and ran it for the 1987 season, winning an event. He later sold it on when his family came along. He had recently found it again and bought it back, hence the name, and had been working hard to get the car to the track for this event. He did not make any passes in Wild Bunch sessions Saturday with the dragster, though did make it to the startline in a RWYB session. He dialled in at 16.00 even for Sunday, but unfortunately did not take part in any of the rounds on Sunday, due to various minor problems. Hope he can get the teething troubles sorted and be back out on track soon. Welcome to the Wild Bunch, Andy!
WB 78 was Keith Crampton's sixth event of the year with the Bunch, with his Soultown Shaker slingshot. Keith came into the event having been in the Top 4 at all the other 5 events this season, and was leading in the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series. Keith started Saturday with a pass of 11.289 at 109.79mph. He then ran a slower 11.637 at 101.41mph. He improved again in the third session, to an 11.248 at 113.33mph, and ran even better in the fourth, with an 11.19-second pass. The team were again wearing the white Castrol overalls on the start line, and Keith had decked out his pit complete with ‘disco floor’ matting and glitter ball! Keith dialled in at 11.24 for Sunday's rounds. He started the day really well, with an 11.226 at 115.83mph. He then ran quicker, with an 11.203 at 115.07mph. Keith was a bit off pace in the heat of the day, running an 11.370 at 110.16mph in the third round. He then ran his quickest pass of the weekend in Round 4, and 11.162 at 114.50mph. Keith finished in 4th place overall, keeping his string of Top 4 placings going. Well done, Keith! He and the team were also awarded the Best Appearing Team Spot Prize by the commentators. So another great weekend for them! Keith is now in 3rd place in both the Wild Bunch and Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series and is still leading the Real Steel Series.
WB 91 Bob Hawkins was in his fifth event of the season with the Wild Bunch in his Time Traveller slingshot. Unfortunately, son Tom was ill, so could not attend the event, but Bob was ably assisted again by Dave and Linda Williams and another friend. Bob had been running a string of very low 8's recently, and had tuned the car again for the start of the weekend. Well, he went straight out and ran a new Personal Best ET and first ever 7-second run of 7.990 at 167.30mph, on his first pass of the weekend! Big congratulations to Bob and the whole team on their achievement! Bob then made some tuning adjustments and recorded a more conservative 8.380 at 159.69mph in the second session. He later ran an 8.203 at 164.25mph in the third and an 8.379 in the fourth. Bob dialled in at 8.24 for Sunday's rounds. He began the day with a strong 8.099 at 164.91mph. He followed this with a closer to Dial 8.261 at 160.78mph, and an 8.162 at 162.49mph. His Round 4 pass was an 8.283 at 164.26mph and he finished in 5th place overall for the event. Well done on the magic 7, Bob!! Bob is now in 4th place in the Real Steel Series.
WB 154 saw the welcome return of Roy Wilding with Roger Sinclair and Mick Kemp's S&K Racing rear-engined dragster in their first event for a couple of years with the Wild Bunch with that car. (Roy was also running his blown Chariot of Fire slingshot at this same event, ably crewed by the Marras! And they eventually won the Best Appearing Team for the whole event!). The S&K team had recently had a new nitrous system and had high hopes of testing this. But they had some problems late in the week with a fire up, when the fuel pump was not working properly. They tried a spare Saturday, but this was not producing enough pressure. It looked like they were not going to be able to make a pass at the weekend, but eventually managed to acquire a suitable pump from NFAA head Lawrie Gatehouse. They then dialled in at 7.50 for Sunday's rounds, somewhat quicker than the car's best ever ET. They did not really have a baseline for the tuneup, as the settings were all made to the previous fuel pump and system. Roy put in a checkout pass of 8.451 at 143.54mph in the first round. The team then missed the next round, and Roy came back out for the third, with an 8.739 at 153.14mph. He also missed the last round. So hope they can get a handle on the new setup soon. Roy was awarded Best Burnout by the commentators for his strong smoky burnouts! It was great to have the whole team racing with us again!
WB 496 saw the first ever Wild Bunch event for Sam Freeman with his Double Density altered. Sam had been working hard to get the car ready for the event and was looking forward to seeing how it would run. After some initial problems Saturday morning, which prevented the team from making the first session, Sam came out in the second and ran a promising 8.29-second pass. His next run was a new Personal Best ET and first time in the 7's in the car, with a 7.902 at 162.49mph! Congratulations to Sam and all the team! This earned him the Quickest ET of the event for the Wild Bunch. He then posted an 8.6 on his next run. Sam dialled in at 8.00 seconds even for Sunday, and started the day with an 8.202 at 164.83mph. He then had a problem off the line in the second round, and posted a 17.877 at 163.08mph, an unusual combination of ET & Speed! He then bounced back in the next round, recording another 7, a 7.941 at a new Personal Best Speed of 166.71mph. He then posted another good time in the fourth round, an 8.061 at 163.66mph. He finished in 9th place overall, and the team thoroughly enjoyed the weekend! Welcome to the Bunch!
Guest 971 saw us welcome a racer from Germany, Rainer Ziegler, as a guest participant, with his slingshot The Dude. Rainer had entered in the historic class, but Dragstalgia organiser James Forster had asked if he could join in with us, as he ‘really wanted to run against some slingshots’! Seeing as he had travelled all that way, and was a keen nostalgia racer, we of course said ‘yes’! Rainer's previous PB had been an 8.60, but he had tuned up his engine and was raring to go, on his first ever time at Santa Pod, which he described later as the ‘holy grail’ of Drag Racing for him! He began Saturday with a new Personal Best ET of 8.557 at 154.23mph! Congrats to him! He followed this with a consistent 8.577 at 154.25mph. On Sunday, he dialled in for fun, with an 8.45. He did not make the first round, but raced in the second, posting an 8.619 at 146.70mph. He was then doing some maintenance and making adjustments, and did not make the third round, but came back out in the fourth round and recorded another PB of 8.503 at 154.69mph! Well done, Rainer! Great to have you run with us! We awarded him a token Spot Prize for the ‘Furthest Travelled’! He later wrote that It was a great pleasure for me to run with the Wild Bunch and it was fun fun fun. If you see the guys from the Wild Bunch please say greetings to all of them.Hope to see him again at next Dragstalgia!
Congratulations to Scottie and the whole of Team Tiki, on their first win of the year! This was accompanied by £50 prize money, courtesy of Roy Wilding, for each event winner in his Series. Many thanks to Roy for this kind contribution! And all of the trophies this weekend were sponsored by ‘Ratcatcher Racing’, so many thanks to them! And congratulations to Tom, Adam and Keith for their Top 4 placings. And congratulations to all the Wild Bunch teams on another truly fantastic show! We heard a lot of good comments from people throughout the weekend about the Wild Bunch again, especially about the quality of the cars and the appearance of the teams! Great weekend for many people, with Scottie running his first ever 12, Terry, Mark and Sag running their first ever 8's and Bob and Sam running their first 7's! Great achievements for all!

It was a brilliant event! Huge thanks to all the marshals and officials and especially the fire and track crews at Santa Pod for their extreme hard work in the very hot conditions! Much appreciated as always! And big thanks to the organisers for a wonderful event!

We are now really looking forward to the seventh Real Steel Series round of 2013 at the Open Sports Nationals at Shakey on August Bank Holiday on 24th - 26th August! This will be the season finale of the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series. We should have another big field for that one!!
