Qualifying Saturday
This was a qualifying day and there were scheduled to be 3 rounds. The 9 teams competing at the event hoped the weather was as good as the ‘late summer’ forecast predicted! We were 16th on the running order. Saturday's weather started dull, and although we were in the pairings lanes for 11:30am, we eventually had to turn back for persistent drizzle. The track re-opened around 2pm, but sadly Graham Ellis had a bad crash in his Pro Mod Superbird, and the safety and medical teams were quickly on the scene to look after him. Some time later he was flown to hospital, and thankfully early reports were that he was conscious, and though had some injuries, is expected to fully recover. We all wish him a speedy recovery and the best to him and his family and team. And we once again commend all the crews for their professionalism and great care. And the safety regulations and chassis construction and builders for doing such an excellent job. The track crew worked very hard and later re-opened the track around 5:15pm, in lovely sunshine and we got a qualifier at 6:15pm. Then, once again due to their hard work, we got a second qualifier at 7:45pm in the dark! All 9 teams safely qualified. That day, one driver, Andrew Murphy, set a Personal Best ET.
WB 1 Adam Price was back in the Go Hard or Go Home!!! altered for his eighth event of the season, and keen to see if he could make it ‘three in a row’ for Wild Bunch Series wins! The team had been at the test day on the Friday and had some 9.3s and 9.4s. Adam and the team dialled in at 9.35 for the first round, and Adam recorded a breakout 9.347 at 142.55mph to start the day. The team lowered the Dial for the second round, to 9.32, and Adam red lit by a small margin of .002, and broke out again, recording a 9.303 at 143.04mph. He qualified in 8th place overall.
WB 4 Andrew Murphy was back in the B-Sting altered for the team's fourth event of the season, after repairing the damage sustained at ‘Dragstalgia’. The team dialled in at 10.50 for the opening round. Andrew recorded a breakout run, and new Personal Best ET of 10.190 at 130.20mph! Much to the team's surprise! And taking close to two tenths off the previous best. They lowered the Dial-in to 10.15 for the second round, and Andrew posted another PB of 10.118 at 130.29mph! The car was sure running well! He finished in 9th place overall in qualifying.
WB 6 ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was on his eighth Wild Bunch event of the season in the Backdraft slingshot. The team had recently taken part in a push start at their 6th Cacklefest at the 25th Anniversary Hot Rod Drags, the weekend before, where they also had a tribute to ‘Miss Hurst Golden Shifter’. The team started the weekend with a Dial of 8.78, and Chris began with an 8.879 at 149.06mph. The team raised the Dial to 8.82 for the night qualifier, and Chris posted a breakout 8.803 at 150.14mph, his quickest and fastest run in the dark! He qualified in 3rd place overall.
WB 17 Scot Durrant was in his third and the team's sixth event of the season with the Tiki Munki slingshot coupe. They had taken part in another push start at the Hot Rod Drags Cacklefest and thoroughly enjoyed it! The team started the day with a Dial-in of 13.05, and Scottie posted a 13.303 at 94.46mph in the first round. The team raised the Dial to 13.16 for the next qualifier, but due to reduced visibility on the night run, Scottie recorded a 14.424 at 67.86mph. He finished in 6th place.
WB 25 Terry Clifford was in his seventh Wild Bunch event of the season with his Ratcatcher Resurrection slingshot. Terry and team had also taken part in the push start for the previous weekend's Cacklefest at the Hot Rod Drags. Terry began the day with a Dial-in of 9.28 and posted a 9.369 at 147.65mph for his first qualifier. The team kept this Dial for the night qualifier, and Terry ran a much quicker 9.161 at 149.07mph. He qualified in 2nd place overall.
WB 67 Darryl Howells was in his seventh Wild Bunch event of the season in the DASH Racing Chemical Reaction slingshot. He was another driver to run in the Hot Rod Drags Cacklefest the weekend before. He began the weekend with a Dial-in of 9.54 and recorded a 9.703 at 138.21mph for starters. But unfortunately, after the burnout for the night qualifying run, the car lost fire. Darryl tried to re-fire, but then shut down with problems. Back in the pits, the team found that the cam retainer had come off and pushed the fuel pump off, and jammed the timing chain! So sadly that was it for their weekend. Hopefully the damage is minimal and the winter rebuild small! Darryl qualified in 4th.
WB 69 Alan Loten and crewman Steve arrived for their seventh event of the season with the Paranoia altered. They had made a change, and hoped the car would be back on form. They dialled in at 9.50 for the first round, and Alan posted a frustrating 10.192 at 125.14mph. The team made another change for the night run and dialled in at 9.70. Alan had problems with the shift on this run, and recorded a 12.701 at 68.03mph. He qualified in 7th place overall.
WB 78 Keith Crampton was back out with his Soultown Shaker slingshot for his eighth Wild Bunch event of the season, and had an even fancier blue and orange marquee, and disco flooring in his pit. He started off with a Dial-in of 11.25, and recorded a good 11.292 at 114.34mph, to go straight into the Top Spot. He kept this Dial on the evening qualifier, and ran a breakout 11.208 at 115.51mph. He Qualified #1, a great start to his weekend!
WB 91 Bob Hawkins was in his seventh Wild Bunch event of the season with his Time Traveller slingshot. He had taken part in another ‘fire burnout’ at the Cacklefest at last weekend's Hot Rod Drags. He dialled in at 8.10 for the first round, and ran an 8.273 at 163.66mph for starters. The team kept this Dial-in for the night qualifier, and Bob broke out with a strong 8.068 at 165.46mph! He qualified in 5th place overall.
Race Day Sunday (Eliminations)
Sunday dawned cloudy and soon cleared up and the temperature was nice and warm, more like the ‘Summer Nationals’ than the ‘Fall Nationals’! The track opened around 9:30am and we completed all 4 rounds of racing. There were some exciting moments with breakouts and red lights and close races!

Round 1
All 9 Wild Bunch cars had qualified for eliminations, so there were due to be 4 good races and a Bye in the first round, which took place around 12:30pm. The first run saw Adam taking a Bye, as he had been due to race Darryl. He recorded a breakout 9.274 at 143.76mph on a 9.30 Dial-in. He also posted the Wild Bunch Best Reaction of Race day, with an .057 light. Keith Crampton then took his earned Bye for being #1 Qualifier. He posted a breakout 11.140 at 115.23mph on an 11.25 Dial. One of the races this round saw Scottie matched up with Terry. Scottie ran close to his Dial-in with a 13.119 at 95.45mph on a 13.10 Dial-in to take the win over a breaking-out Terry, who recorded a strong 9.002 at 149.06mph on his 9.16 Dial. Another race was Chris against Alan. Chris dialled in at 8.78 and Alan opted for a 9.75. Alan and Steve had certainly cured a problem, as the altered ran a 9.657 at 134.43mph in a breakout loss to Chris’ 8.853 at 149.12mph. The last of the races was Andrew versus Bob. The team dialled Andrew in at 10.15 and Bob went for an 8.08. Andrew left the line before the tree was activated and did not record a time, handing the win to Bob, who ran an 8.179 at 164.85mph.

Quarter-Finals
These took place at around 2:15pm. On this round, it was Scottie who had a Bye. He recorded a 13.312 at 95.55mph on his 13.10 Dial-in, to advance to the Semis. One of the two races of the round was Chris against Bob. Chris and team raised his Dial to 8.82, whilst Bob kept his 8.08. Bob ran close to his Dial, taking the win by posting an 8.114 at a slowing 149.56mph, whilst Chris broke out, with a strong 8.726 at 150.10mph, one of his best runs ever. The other race of the round was crucial for the Wild Bunch Series: if Adam could beat Keith and then stage in the Semis, he would win the Wild Bunch Series, and if Keith could beat Adam and get to the Final, he would win! Adam and team dialled in low at 9.23, and Keith went for an 11.14. Well, the race was over at the start, as Keith left early before the tree was activated, handing the win to Adam who posted a good 9.277 at 143.40mph! Fourth place for the event was decided on ‘Closest to Dial without breaking out or redlightling’, but as only Chris recorded a time out of the two runners-up in the Quarter-finals, he finished in 4th place. And Keith was awarded the Best Appearing Car Spot Prize by the commentators.

Semi-Finals
There was not long to wait until the Semi-Finals, in fact our class was being called just after we had returned to the pits! This round saw Bob taking the Bye run. He ran a great 8.021 at 165.39mph on his 8.08 Dial-in. The only race of the round saw Adam matched with Scottie. Now, if Adam managed to stage and break the beam, then he would win this year's Wild Bunch Series! Adam dialled in at 9.24 and Scottie at 13.10. Adam had another good reaction, and this exciting race was a battle of the breakouts. Adam recorded a 9.216 at 143.39mph, to Scottie's strong 12.994 at 97.09mph, just a thousandth off his PB! Adam took the win by having a lesser breakout, and also secured Team Gridlock's 3rd Wild Bunch Series title in a row! Congratulations to the whole team on this achievement!! The team were also awarded the Best Appearing Team Spot Prize by the commentators for their well-turned our car and team appearance, especially Lorraine's beautiful new blue and white polka dot 50's dress backup outfit!

Final
Again, there was not much time between the Semi and the Final. Again, this was a crucial race, as the winner would secure the ‘Springbridge MSA Challenge’ win. Adam and team again lowered their Dial, to a 9.16, and Bob lowered his to 8.05. Again, this race was all over at the start, as Bob redlit, recording a slowing 8.532 at 145.27mph, to Adam's great 9.171 at 143.49mph. Just one hundredth off his PB, and taking the Closest to Dial-in Spot Prize for good measure! Congratulations, Adam!!

It was a great event to finish the season with! Once again huge thanks to the track and safety crews, marshalls and officials and everyone at Santa Pod who worked really hard as always!

Tom Larman has finished in 2nd place in the Wild Bunch Series, another great result for the team! Keith Crampton finished in 3rd place and Scot & Gina Durrant finished in 4th place, so congratulations to all of them!! Adam and Team Gridlock have also won the 2013 Real Steel Series AND the Springbridge MSA Challenge! So big congratulations again to them!! As they won all 5 Series!

We are now looking forward to our Annual Dinner Dance and Prize Presentation on 23rd November. It will be another great evening to celebrate all our winners after another fantastic season!!
