Qualifying - Friday
This was a qualifying day and there were scheduled to be 2 qualifiers, and the Wild Bunch were 26th on the running order! The weather stayed dry all day, but there was quite a bit of downtime, so we did not get our first qualifier until mid-afternoon. We queued up for a second and were set to have a night-time run, but an unfortunate incident near to curfew-time meant we didn't get the run.

Saturday
There were then 2 qualifiers on the Saturday schedule, with the first taking place late morning. By then, 5 of the 6 teams had qualified. There was a strong, cold headwind for much of the day. We were later called for a third qualifier, but unfortunately rain stopped play.
WB 1 Wild Bunch winner Keith Crampton was out early for his first event of the season in his 'Soul Town Shaker' slingshot. Keith was sporting a fantastic paint job on his helmet to match the colour scheme of his car. He was ably crewed by the Marras and the Marra ladies. Keith began with a Dial of 11.00 even. He posted an 11.091 for starters. He raised this Dial to 11.05 for Saturday's qualifier and ran an 11.500 at 112.37mph. He qualified 2nd. The commentators awarded him 'Best Appearing Car' Spot Prize, for a well-turned out car and a great overall package, including that fab new helmet design.
WB 4 2015 'Spirit of Nostalgia Challenge' and 'Springbridge MSA Challenge' Winner Phil James was raring to go in his 'Rampage' funny car on the first event in the defence of his titles. Phil was joined by his crew, son Carl and friend Matt. For his first round, he dialled in at 9.33 and ran well straight off the trailer, recording a 9.399 at 139.84mph pass. This was good for #1 Qualifier at that point. On his second qualifier, into the headwind, he raised the Dial to 9.48 and ran a 9.590 at 136.96mph. For the third year in a row, he started the season with a #1 Qualifier position! Well done, Phil!!
WB 25 Terry Clifford was back out in the 'Ratcatcher Resurrection' slingshot, and looking forward to racing, with many of his family as crew. He dialled in at 9.30 for starters, but the car didn't change into 2nd gear, and he posted an 11.194 at 116.55mph. The problem was soon cured for the next round, as he ran a much-improved 9.419 at 144.38mph on a 9.30 Dial-in. He qualified in 3rd place overall.
WB 67 Darryl Howells was back out early in the season in his amazingly-painted 'Chemical Reaction' slingshot. He dialled in at 9.18 to start the ball rolling, and posted a 10.334 at 128.31mph to open his account. He kept the Dial for the next round and ran an 11.168 at 114.33mph, with a problem with the throttle. He's sure to have that fixed for the next event. He qualified in 5th place overall.
WB 76 Sarah Howells was running in Steve and Lesley Field's 'Black Pig Too' slingshot, and couldn't wait to be back out racing. The team dialled in at a 9.1 for starters, but the car coughed and spluttered and wouldn't keep running. The team experienced another problem before the next qualifier, and could not fix it at the track, so could not make the call, so unfortunately Sarah did not qualify at the event.
WB 91 Bob Hawkins was debuting a new bigger blower on his 'Time Traveller II' blown slingshot, and had made some other upgrades, in search of even quicker numbers!! Bob was testing on his first qualifier, and dialled in at an amazingly low 6.90! Bob posted a 7.727 at 167.92mph on his first run, not bad for a checkout pass! He then raised the Dial-in slightly to 7.00 even. Bob took half a second off his E.T. recording a strong 7.224 at 182.88mph, going in the right direction! He qualified in 4th place overall.
Race Day Sunday
We were a long way down the running order on Sunday, and after a few periods of downtime and a massive dry-up effort by the fantastic track crew after a downpour, we were on the verge of being called for our first round. Another shower sadly put paid to this, and the rest of the event, so unfortunately none of our eliminations took place. Such a shame!

Well done to all the teams for a short but good start to the season. A great bunch of cars and teams! Huge thanks to all the marshals and officials and track crew for all their hard work over the weekend!

We are now looking forward to the second Spirit of Nostalgia Challenge Series and Springbridge MSA Challenge rounds of 2016, and the first APIRA Series round, at the 'Springspeed Nationals' at Shakespeare County on April 30th - May 2nd Bank Holiday weekend. It should be a great event! We're hoping for better weather and a really good field of Wild Bunch!
