The Wild Bunch welcomed back a small group of racers for the start of the 2018 Season, including reigning Roy Wilding Series title holder Terry Clifford and incumbent Springbridge MSA Challenge holder Bob Hawkins, who is now running on Nitro in his awesome 'Time Traveller II' slingshot. Unfortunately Phil James had entered with 'Rampage' but was unable to attend due to personal reasons. The 5 teams were all looking forward to running on the new concrete track at Santa Pod! However the weather was not on anyone's side and it was rainy and cold most of the weekend.
Qualifying Friday This was a qualifying day and there were scheduled to be 2 qualifiers, and the Wild Bunch were last on the running order! Unfortunately the day was rained off and no runs took place. Saturday There were 2 qualifiers on the Saturday schedule, and again the Wild Bunch were last on the running order. Again, sadly the day was rained off. Santa Pod were even advising spectators not to turn up unless they had tickets and a lot of fortitude for the conditions!! | |
WB 25 | Terry Clifford was back out in the 'Ratcatcher Resurrection' slingshot, and looking forward to starting his 12th season with the car. More exciting things are planned for later in the year! |
WB 64 | Russ Heaven and team had worked hard to get the 'Tight Fit' slingshot ready for the event, and stuck it out until the end, just to make sure they were there in case any runs happened! |
WB 67 | Darryl Howells was raring to go with his 'Chemical Reaction' slingshot. It was his 60th Birthday on the Sunday, so a fun party was arranged for the Saturday night! Darryl received an awesome present from wife Sarah – a flight in a 2-seater Spitfire!! Wow! Darryl will be over the moon to do that!! |
WB 76 | Steve Field was out early with his and Lesley's 'Black Pig Too'. Wishing them lots of luck this year with the car and no gremlins! Steve, this could be your year!! Fingers crossed! |
WB 91 | Bob Hawkins was debuting Nitro in his 'Time Traveller II' blown slingshot!! It sounded amazing! Bob was all prepared, and set with a reasonably mild tuneup, but wouldn't mind betting even the test run would have been a 6!! Best of luck with the CH3NO2 Bob!! |
Race Day Sunday We were a fair way down the running order, so waited to see what happened. There had been a bit of damp first thing and it was still very cold and the track itself was also very cold. Unfortunately there were a couple of crashes, one in Pro ET and then Jack Brewster in Super Pro in his gorgeous 'Just Mustard'. Thankfully both racers were okay, though Jack had to go for a checkup. Really sorry to see this and we send our best wishes to both for their rebuilds. After this, the officials decided to race only the slower classes for the rest of the day. The Wild Bunch teams waited to see if the situation would change but in the end only 7 classes raced. So no runs all weekend! Such a shame, but the weather conditions were against it. The track crew did everything they could!! Well done to all the teams for their patience and support! Much better luck next time! Huge thanks to all the marshals and officials and track crew for their hard work over the weekend! We are now looking forward to the first Wild Bunch Series round at the 25th Annual 'Nostalgia Nationals' on 11th – 13th May, now at Santa Pod! It should be a great event! We're hoping for much better weather and a big field of Wild Bunch! |
