Hi John,
For a slingshot tThe drivers compartment area needs to be to the spec. That includes everything from the motor plate back including side rails, top and bottom hoops, all the cage, uprights, floor crossmembers etc. Get the MSA tech rule book (about £10) and/or the racer club book, and it describes all you need for a taggable compartment.
It's peculiar because although you will hear CDS everywhere it never states it has to be CDS, just mild steel tube of the correct dims, but everyone uses CDS as it's readily available and better than welded etc. From memory, the min gauge for mild steel CDS is 3mm, and the tube sizes are all in the drawings.
If you want to go further/faster then the SFI regs are avaialble from the US for about $50 and are an interesting read. Likewise you can buy plans from Mark Williams and companys like that which are informative too.
But, for an 8.50 slingshot you only need the lower spec as per MSA book etc.
References to roll bars maybe referring to door cars.
Cheers,
Dean.
p.s. what you do from the motor plate to the front wheels is upto you! but it has to pass the 'general' reg section too. I'm sure any of the MSA scrutineers would also be happy to advise you on any details.

As Dean said, its only the driver cell which gets checked for a tag, but even though in front of the engine plate is up to the builder, we (As in scrutineers) dont think 1 mm exhaust tubing would do. "I'm only interested in BWYB" to be honest, I cant see the point on building a car and not doing it to spec in the first place, at least you can enter MSA meetings if you do get hooked or got a more of a chance selling the car if you dont. |

dont bother with the MSA blue book, there is nothing in there about drag racing frames, all the information you need if in the Drag Racing year book (White book) which can be obtained from APIRA or SPRC or you ask someone who has a out of date one (Chassis have been the same for about 5 years now) (I have already given mine away) |
