Hi folks
Here is the brief news from our bonus extra event, the just for fun ‘Fall Shootout’ at the Late Summer Madness RWYB at Shakey, last weekend, 30th September & 1st October.
The Wild Bunch had 5 teams running at the event:
• Rob & Pete Brown in “Wrathchild” • Lee Hartnell in “Metal Mistress” • Philippa Turton in “Bitchcraft” • Steve Bingham in “Sneaky Blinder” • Andy Stones in “Stoned”
Saturday’s weather started with a little drizzle which cleared and the track crew worked hard to get racing going late morning. Several of the teams had 3 runs during the afternoon, which turned out quite nice and sunny in places. Sunday dawned wet, and there were a couple of showers. The marshals and track crew worked relentlessly to get the track open around 12:45pm. The clouds remained all afternoon with a couple of spells of rain spots, and even though the weather threatened it did not actually rain, and we got 3 rounds of racing in, so quite a bonus.
Steve and Heidi with the “Sneaky Blinder” Topo were only at the track for the Saturday, but had time to run a new PB speed, whilst looking great with their 50’s Chevy tow truck and matching teamwear. Meanwhile Lee and Mark Hartnell had once again worked hard to rebuild after head damage in the “Metal Mistress” blown Rover-powered T-bodied altered, and just got it finished Thursday, and fired up Friday night at the track. But on firing up Saturday morning, there seemed to be a timing issue. On inspection it was found that the bottom pulley had cracked, so sadly Lee was not able to run the car. Hope the boys can repair this damage and get some runs in at another RWYB this year. The family all had fun though with the kids joining in playing on the Turtons go karts, and enjoying the racing. Thanks very much for letting the kids (both young and older!!) have fun with the karts, Mark and Philippa!! Everyone seemed to enjoy the laid back atmosphere and made the best of the weather.
So that left us with just 3 teams to contend the racing on Sunday!:
Here are the Top 3:
1st Place: Rob & Pete Brown in “Wrathchild” 2nd Place: Philippa Turton in “Bitchcraft” 3rd Place: Andy Stones in “Stoned”
Here are the Spot Prizes that were awarded:-
Most Improved E.T.: Pete Brown in “Wrathchild” .01 improvement on ET from 10.85 to 10.84 Closest to Dial-in (Race-day): Pete Brown in “Wrathchild” .052 off Best Burnout: Rob & Pete Brown in “Wrathchild” Best Appearing Car & Team: Andy & Cathrine Stones and “Stoned” slingshot and tow vehicle!
PBs: Pete Brown in “Wrathchild” 10.847 / 126.11 Steve Bingham in “Sneaky Blinder” 108.34 mph
And Andy Stones was back deep into the 10’s with a 10.818 @ 130mph and was chuffed with that! Rob and Pete were really consistent on the Saturday, with the boys running within 3 thousandths of each other on their first two runs! And putting in some stonking burnouts! Philippa was running well too and was really consistent Sunday with three 13.3’s. Both keeping up their good form which earnt them 3rd and 4th place in the Wild Bunch Series this season!
Highlights of the weekend include the Bunch dodging the changeable weather and getting 3 rounds in, and the small but enthusiastic group of racers and crews who enjoyed the weekend
Also at the weekend, on Sunday Harley Coulsell lent his Junior dragster to a boy called Will who had just turned 10 and had always wanted to drive some kind of car, and has overcome personal challenges. Will’s family race V Dubs, so he was already used to going drag racing. Harley and Dad Mark tutored him on driving the Junior, and got him used to the car in the pits, and Will eventually had 2 runs, with a best of 15.5 @ 37mph, which was a great achievement for his first time in any kind of car! (Which was coincidentally 6 years to the day since his Mum got her first timing ticket!). Well done, Will! We presented him with a small trophy for being such a great newcomer and a rising star! And such a nice young man, whose talents also stretch to running and football for England! Best of luck to him for a very bright future! The family thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, and thanked the Coulsells profusely for this fabulous opportunity #61514; Well done to Harley too, who was a great teacher, as was his Dad, and so encouraging and generous. (He finished in 12th place in the National Championships so Congrats to him on that!) Way to go, Harley! #61514;
Huge thanks to all the Shakey marshals and officials, track and safety crews and organisers for all their hard work as always, especially in the face of the wet stuff!! Fair play to you all! Also, nice to see Jerry Cookson at the track after his recent health problems. Keep getting better soon, Jerry! All the best! Take it easy!
Some teams will still be going racing for the remaining two RWYB’s at Shakey including the Halloween Bonfire event at the end of October, and some RWYB's at the Pod. Good luck to them all and happy racing!
It is just 7 weeks on Saturday until our Annual Prize Presentation and Dinner Dance on 25th November at Drayton Manor Park and ticket forms will be going out in the post soon for this excellent evening!
All the best C
