Super Series 2001 Round 3 June 16 - 17

Super Series 316th - 17th June 2001Points awarded for Super Series Championship

Super Series 3 was another good event, despite the fact that Saturday was completely rained off. This meant that all the qualifying positions were 'drawn out of a hat' in the interest of fair play. Sunday was brighter and all eliminations were completed. There was a field of 11 Wild Bunch cars.

Saturday

The weather was pretty rainy, and despite the best efforts of the marshals nearly getting the track dry, the rain came down again and the day was a washout. Like most other classes, qualifying was by random draw and this saw Tony Smith getting the '#1 Qualifier' spot!
Sunday

This was race day, and despite some very grey clouds at times, the rain held off, and eliminations were actually completed early, thanks to hard work from organisers, marshals, officials and racers.
Round 1

Tony Smith took the bye-run with a 12.429 on a 12.00 Dial-in, the first run of the weekend! (Tony had only just rebuilt the engine a couple of weeks ago, and was now running with the body back on the altered).

Next up was Andy Gosling running-in the newly rebuilt engine with a 14.028 "checkout"(!) pass on a 13.40 Dial-in against Paul Croston's 12.986 on a 12.50 Dial-in. Andy won with a 3/10ths better reaction time, but Paul took the "Closest Runner-up" Spot Prize, finishing only .091 behind.

Chris Hartnell ran 9.493 on a 9.44 Dial-in beating Colin Aldred's 10.863 on a 10.80 Dial-in (.053 off vs .063 off!), Chris with a slightly better reaction. Colin had been lying 3rd overall in Super Series and always runs consistently, so another close race.

Ed Yates had been in 4th place overall in Super Series, and ran an 11.051 on a 10.20 Dial-in against Tom Coe's 12.348 on an 11.93. Tom had had a front tyre puncture on this run, but soon fixed it by the next race! (Tom and Dad Alec were lying 1st in Super Series, running as a team, leading Chris by just 10 points!).

Pete Watkins had just come back from rebuilding his engine, blown up at Super Series 1. He ran an excellent Personal Best of 10.835 on an 11.00 Dial-in, against Johnny Hall, who ran a 10.139 on a 9.70 Dial-in to advance to the Quarter-finals in only his second event.

In the last pair, Mark Coulsell had problems on the line, experienced a flameout, and had distributor problems, so did not run, while Darryl Howells ran a 13.118 on a 12.60 Dial-in.
Quarter-Finals

The first Quarter-final saw Tony Smith running the "Closest to Dial-in" of a 12.212 on a 12.20 against Andy Gosling's breakout of 12.884 on a 13.40 Dial-in. This was the first time that "Nutcracker" had been in the 12's and the whole Team Dog's Bollocks were really chuffed with the performance (nearly another ton with 99.78 mph too!)! Congratualtions!

Chris Hartnell faced Tom Coe and ran a 9.512 on a 9.44 Dial-in to Tom's 12.404 on an 11.93, to advance to the Semi-finals. (Tom took 4th Place by virtue of the tot-back system).

The third pairing saw Johnny Hall breakout with an excellent Personal Best of 9.669 on a 9.99 Dial-in against Darryl Howells' 12.965 on a 12.60. Once again Johnny was really chuffed, in only his 5th run in the car, taking "Fastest MPH" Spot Prize to boot with a 142.41 mph!
Semi-Finals

Darryl had a Bye-run in this round and clocked a 12.912 on a 12.60 Dial-in, to advance to the Final.

Meanwhile, Chris faced Tony in the other Semi. Chris' lights came down and he set off for a brilliant 9.461 on a 9.44 Dial-in, but Tony had just sat there. It was immediately diagnosed as a fault on the tree and a re-run was called for!!
Fortunately, the officials took a lunch break giving Chris some extra time to get back to the pits, drop the oil, refuel and get back round to race Tony.
Unfortunately, there was then an oildown just as the two cars were about to burnout, so they then had to sit with the tension mounting further! (To while away the time, both drivers were seen testing out each other's cars for size - the pictures can even be seen on the "BootSoop" website!).
When the re-match came, both drivers were a little off the pace with Tony running a 13.008 on his 12.20 Dial-in and Chris taking the win with a 9.731 on his 9.44 Dial-in. This only left a short time til the Final, as all other classes were already lined up for their finals, including Darryl who was waiting patiently at the end of the queue.
Final

Within 24 minutes of the Semi, Chris had refuelled and made it in time to join Darryl as the last 2 finalists of the day. Darryl had dialled in a more conservative 12.85 and ran a sensational Personal Best of 12.328, eclipsing the Dial-in by nearly half a second! Chris also broke out with a 9.415 on a 9.44 Dial-in, but broke out least to take the win, and collecting "Best Reaction" Spot Prize on this run with a .532 time. Chris also took the "Driver's Choice" Spot Prize voted for by all Wild Bunch drivers present.
The Super Series prizegiving was very shortly afterwards, and along with the 1st and 2nd place trophies, a special award for "Best Appearing Team" overall of Super Series 3 was given to Team "B-Sting" (for obvious reasons!!), so many congratulations to them as well! Another great event!
