Saturday The weather forecast had again been not too good for the weekend, but luckily Saturday's weather turned out pretty good. This was a practice day and many drivers got in 3 or more runs. On the evening, the Wild Bunch held our annual fancy dress party, and this year the theme was “Pirates of the Caribbean”! There were around 40 pirates and wenches ‘marauding’ around the pits, with Chairpirate ‘Crazy Chris’ turning his motorised bar stool into a fully fledged pirate galleon, complete with Jolly Roger sail! Helen of Team Twisted had handmade some fabulous costumes for the whole team, and the youngest pirate to take part was Harley Coulsell, 21 months! So there was fun for all ages, and everyone had a great time! Click here for some pics ! Sunday (Series Points Day) With an early start promised for Sunday, we were hopeful of getting at least one round in on the day, but again the weather did not play ball, and there were rainshowers on and off all day. Despite the best efforts of the track crew, the organisers were forced to call the event off early afternoon. Another great shame! And thanks again to all the track crew and marshals for all their hard work to try to get the event going on Sunday. As no Wild Bunchers had any runs over the weekend, here is a summary of Dial-ins and other news: | |
WB 1 | saw Tony and Dave still in the lead of the Wild Bunch Series with The Cunning Plan minivan altered. Tony made 4 passes on the Saturday, starting with an errant 12.455 @ 100 mph, with 7 cylinders. The team fixed the problem and Tony recorded an 11.626 followed by an 11.513 @ 113.31 mph, before posting a wayward 12.045 at the end of the day. Tony and Dave remain leaders of the Wild Bunch Series. Dial-in: 11.50. |
WB 3 | Andy Murphy was the driver of the B-Sting altered this weekend. He made 4 runs Saturday, including a 10.475 @ 128.86 mph and a 10.549 @ 129.05 mph, a new Personal best speed for Andy. Dial-in: 10.45. |
WB 6 | ‘Crazy’ Chris Hartnell was hoping for some consistent runs with the Backdraft slingshot. On Saturday, he put in three runs, starting with a 9.726 @ 134.06 mph, followed by a 9.747 @ 138.11 mph. He then ran a 9.936 @ 141.11 mph, not hooking up off the line, but improving at the top end. Dial-in: 9.73. |
WB 7 | Roy Wilding was back out in his Hemi Hunter blown slingshot. Roy made a couple of checkout passes on the Saturday, which including a troubled 9.8. On inspection back in the pits, there was a broken rocker arm and other minor damage. Roy proceeded straight home for spares, came back, fixed the damage and fired the car up ready for the morning! Dial-in: 8.70. |
WB 9 | saw Ray Ford again in the hotseat of the RamRaider slingshot of Team Dog's B's. He made 3 runs Saturday, starting with a 9.2. He then recorded a 9.31 and another 9.3-second pass, both at 145 mph. Dial-in: 9.25. |
WB 17 | saw Gina Rumble raring to go in the Tiki Munki Pinto-powered altered. Gina put in 5 or 6 runs on the Saturday, including a 15.6 @ 86 mph. She improved throughout the day, recording passes of 15.1, 14.9 @ 87 mph, and 15.0. Dial-in: 14.98. |
WB 34 | was the Mad Rs second event of the season with the Shy Talker slingshot, after the team's checkout passes at the Summer Nationals at the Pod. Alec made 3 runs, beginning with a checkout 10-second pass. The next two runs saw slight improvements with a 9.8 and a 9.4, with steady progress. Then Tom had his first run in the car since the engine rebuild, and for the first time in about a year. He recorded a respectable 9.645 @ 145.32 mph. Dial-in: 9.50. |
WB 40 | Darren Law was back in The Wicked Lady Rear-engine dragster. Darren made 3 runs Saturday, starting with a low 10-second pass, with a good reaction of .055. A couple more 10-second passes followed. Dial-in: 10.20. |
WB 44 | Dave Rowlands was in his second event with the Destiny's Angel altered. Unfortunately he deep-staged on his only pass of Saturday, and did not record a time. He's sure to bounce back for the next event! |
WB 47 | Liam Maltby arrived Saturday afternoon with his Vauxhall-bodied comp altered, Still Shovin’ It, due to work commitments, so unfortunately did not get to make any runs over the weekend, though he did have a couple of fire-ups. Dial-in: 13.00. |
WB 52 | Ant Harris in the Frantic Topolino altered was hoping for some more strong mid 9-second passes. He made 5 runs on the Saturday, starting with a 9.840 @ 137 mph. He then posted runs of 9.812 @ 136 mph, 9.638 @ 138 mph, 9.809 @ 136 mph, and 9.7 @ 139 mph. Another set of good runs. |
WB 54 | saw the debut of Phil Sweeney's new altered, Bone Idle, which he had been working on for months, burning the midnight oil! The car looked great, complete with nostalgic scoop and a nice paint job! Phil and Tony did some tuning and firing up in the pits and got the car to the line mid-Saturday, only to be pushed back after the burnout, due to a leak in the gearbox. The team had this fixed later in the day, and were hopeful of some checkout passes on the Sunday. Dial-in: 10.50. |
WB 57 | Neil Ward was back with his crew for hopefully more tuning progress in the Andromeda slingshot. He made 4 passes on the Saturday, including a great 8.96, and later a 9.3. Dial-in: 9.10. |
WB 67 | Darryl Howells went into the event in the lead of the Real Steel Series with the DASH Chemical Reaction slingshot. He made several runs on the Saturday, beginning with an 11.308 @ 132.37 mph, an off-pace 12.4 with a bog off the line, and then a much-improved 10.2! Darryl remains in the lead of the Real Steel Series. Dial-in: 10.30. |
WB 76 | Steve Field was back out with The Black Pig altered. He made a couple of runs on the Saturday, including a 10.112 @ 139.36 mph, and a 10.729 @ 137.59 mph. |
WB 95 | was Mark Richardson with the canopied Pony Express altered. Mark made a few 9-second runs on the Saturday. Dial-in: 9.60. |
WB 147 | was the second event of the season for Sid Slattery's Destiny slingshot, but his first actual runs of the year, due to the complete rainoff at the Nostalgia Nationals! So, also Sid's first runs in about a year! On his first pass, he had a problem on the line, and could not run. But he bounced back well with an 11.6 @ 118 mph, followed by an 11.8 @ 122 mph. Dial-in: 10.30. |
This was a good event on the Saturday where we were lucky with the weather and had quite a lot of track time. But unfortunately the weather disappointingly curtailed another event so no runs took place on the Sunday. Thanks very much to all the hard working marshals and officials for their efforts in trying to make it happen!
We are now really looking forward to the Summer Shootout RWYB event at York Dragway! This will be Wild Bunch Series Round 5, Real Steel Series Round 8 and Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series Round 3! |
