The June Shootout was the fourth event of the WB season. It was the second round of the Wild Bunch Series, and Real Steel Series Round 4, and there was a field of 11 Wild Bunch cars participating: 3 Altereds, 7 Slingshots and 1 Rear-engined dragster.

| But missing were many regulars, including Adam Price and Team Gridlock who had transmission and tyre woes, Crazy Chris and team who had thrown a rod in the Backdraft slingshot, Dick Sharp who is repairing the throttle linkage in the Dorset Horn, Ian Turboville who had holed a piston in the 'Mr Spokehead II' slingshot, Alan Smith who suffered engine damage in the 'Avanti' slingshot and Pedro Rawlinson who suffered gearbox damage in 'The Fleeting Glimpse' slingshot. We hope these teams and many others will be back out as soon as possible!! Best of luck to all of them!!
The weather forecast was mixed for the weekend. Saturday dawned cool, cloudy and very windy. We all knew the forecast was rainy for Sunday so we put our back-up plan into action and, by unanimous agreement of the drivers present, scheduled our first Series points round for Saturday afternoon. Many teams managed to get in around 2 runs throughout the day, before dialling in. We were going to try for 2 rounds, but some oildowns delayed the action, and our round took place around 3:45pm, with 10 drivers making passes. Surprisingly, Sunday turned out drier than expected and the wind dropped, and though there were heavy clouds around all day the rain held off til 4pm, and we were able to complete the remaining 3 Series points rounds!! So a real good result on that! | |
| WB 3 | saw Dave Williams in his fourth event of the season with his 'Green with Envy' altered. He made two runs Saturday, the first an 11.4, and the second an 11.446 at 116.87mph. Linda dialled him in at 11.40 for the rounds, and Dave recorded an 11.436 at 116.38mph on the first round. Though, due to a problem, he had rolled through stage, and received a red light which put him out of contention for the Top 4! In the second round, Dave posted an 11.592 at 114.71mph. He then went much quicker in the third and fourth rounds, running 11.317 at 115.49mph and 11.371 at 115.51mph, with a Wild Bunch 'Best Reaction' of .041 on this run. |
| WB 8 | saw Mark Coulsell and the Limited Funz team in their fourth event of the season with the 'Ballbreaker' slingshot. They installed a new fuel filter on the Saturday morning, and were in the pits firing up and testing. They were in the queue to run a checkout pass, but ran out of time before the afternoon round, so dialled in blind at 9.08. In the first round, the slingshot bogged off the line, and Mark coasted to a 16.692 at 69.16mph. He came back out for the next round Sunday morning, but had trouble keeping the car running, and got pushed back. The team tried something different back in the pits, but the same problems recurred, with Mark posting 28 and 21-second runs in the following rounds. Back in the pits, the team tried something else to cure the problem but missed out on a test run when the rain started. Hope to see them running quick again at the Nostalgias! |
| WB 9 | was the first drive of the season for Ray Ford in the 'RamRaider' slingshot, which is still available for sale (to some lucky buyer!). It was the team's fourth event of the season with the Wild Bunch. Ray put in a solid pass of 9.38 on the Saturday morning, but missed another test pass due to the oil downs. The team dialled in at 9.33 for the rounds. Ray began with a 9.409 at 144.05mph in the first round. He then ran a similar pass the next morning, a 9.419 at 143.11mph. His third round run was a 9.457 at 143.30mph, and then he went much quicker in the fourth round, with a 9.274 at 144.71mph! Ray finished in 4th place overall, the team's second Top 4 in as many events. Team Dog's Bollocks are now in 2nd place in the Wild Bunch Series and 3rd place in the Real Steel Series. |
| WB 17 | saw Gina Rumble's first Wild Bunch event of the season in the GAS Racing 'Tiki Munki' car, which now sported some neat slingshot bodywork. Gina had several passes on Saturday morning, including a 13.3 and a 12.9-second run. She and Scottie dialled in at 12.83 for the rounds, and Gina's first run was a 12.982 at 100.93mph. In the second round, she ran a new Personal Best E.T. with the slingshot configuration of 12.937 at 98.57mph! She then posted a 13.126 at 96.78mph in the third round, and a 13.102 at a new Personal Best Speed of 101.19mph, which was the fastest the car had run, in any guise. Well done Gina! She finished in 6th place overall for the weekend. |
| WB 40 | Sean Law was again running 'The Wicked Lady' dragster on the Saturday, after recently gaining his MSA licence. Sean put in two good passes of 9.8 and 9.4-seconds before handing the car back to Dad Darren. Darren then dialled in blind at 9.35 for the rounds. His first pass was near the mark, with a 9.302 at 145.31mph. On Sunday morning, teams were given the option of changing the Dial-in once, due the overnight change in the conditions. Darren opted to change to a 9.30, being near his first round run. His second round pass was then a 9.350 at 143.13mph!! Say no more! He followed this with two more consistent passes 9.361 at 143.59mph and 9.371 at 143.67mph in the third and fourth rounds. This consistency earned him 2nd place overall for the event. Darren is now in 4th place in the Wild Bunch Series and 2nd place in the Real Steel Series. |
| WB 41 | Tom Larman and team were raring to go in 'The Ferret' altered. Tom put in 3 runs on Saturday testing, including two 10.6 second passes and a 10.485 at 122.71mph. The presented a Dial-in quandary, but the team settled on a 10.52 for the rounds. Tom started well, with a 10.574 at 121.77mph in the first round. He then recorded a 10.641 at 120.60mph and a 10.635 at 119.79mph in the second and third rounds. The team were delighted when he ran quicker in the fourth round, with a 10.578 at 120.24mph. Tom finished in 3rd place overall, the team's first Top 4 result in Wild Bunch! So many congratulations to all of them!! Tom is now in 3rd place in the Wild Bunch Series. |
| WB 76 | was Steve Field's second outing of the season with the 'Black Pig Too' slingshot. Steve and Lesley had made a last minute decision to attend the event on the Friday, and this proved a good one! Steve was checking things out in the pits Saturday and made one test pass. He and Lesley dialled in at 10.25 for the rounds. Well, Steve's first round run eclipsed this, as he ran a 9.617 at 145.43mph, very near his PB ET, and a new Personal Best Speed! Fair play! This had been much quicker than expected, so Sunday morning, Lesley changed the Dial-in to 9.50. Steve then ran another good pass of 9.645 at 143.47mph in the second round. He experienced trouble in the third round though, as the car lost fire after the burnout and would not re-fire, so Steve could not make a pass. They then decided to sit out the last round, to investigate more, and while they were on a roll! Look forward to seeing more great passes from the car at the Nostalgias! |
| WB 78 | was Keith Crampton's second event of the year with the Bunch, with his 'Soultown Shaker' slingshot. Keith made a couple of passes Saturday, before dialling in at 11.10 for the rounds. His first round run Saturday was an 11.249 at 117.12mph. His second round pass Sunday morning was an 11.206 at 116.23mph. He then ran another 11.2, with an 11.234 at 119.00mph in the third round. He posted his quickest run of the weekend in Round 4, an 11.194 at 118.24mph. Keith finished in 5th place overall. There were bonuses for him at the prize presentation when the car was chosen as 'Best Slingshot' by the commentary team, and Keith was voted 'Driver's Choice' by the majority of the Wild Bunch drivers attending the event. Well done, Keith! |
| WB 91 | was the fourth Wild Bunch event of the season for Bob Hawkins in the 'Time Traveller' slingshot. Bob's first run Saturday was a squirrely 8.832 at 146.91mph on a cool track. He then disconnected the nitrous and recorded a 9.211 at 145.26mph. Bob and Tom dialled in at 9.20 for the rounds, and Bob began well with a 9.263 at 143.81mph in the first round late Saturday. On Sunday morning, they changed the Dial-in slightly to 9.22, and Bob recorded a very close 9.227 at 144.75mph, to move into temporary #1 spot. He then had a problem in the third round and posted a 9.688 at 140.19mph. The fourth round was a similar story, and Bob ran a 9.717 at 138.86mph. He finished in 7th place overall. We're sure he'll have a handle on it at the next event. |
| WB 94 | Steve Maunders arrived early Sunday morning with the team's slingshot. Regular driver, son Tom, had been unwell at the weekend and remained at home, so Steve jumped into the driving seat and dialled in blind for the day, joining in with the early round, and ably assisted by Janet in her first time crewing and tow car driving. Steve had a problem on the run, and recorded a 15.084 at 66.72mph. He then improved in the next round, running a 12.504 at 101.21mph. There was still an issue in the last round where Steve posted a 13.203 at 93.10mph. Later he diagnosed a problem with a push rod, so did not make a late test pass. Hope Steve and Tom can easily sort this and be back out for the next round. Best of luck! |
| WB 109 | saw the second Wild Bunch event of the season for Andrew Murphy in the team's third event of the season with the 'B-Sting' altered. Andrew made a couple of passes Saturday including a 10.818 at 127.76mph, and another where he did not record a time. The team dialled in at 10.80 for the rounds. Andrew recorded a 10.711 at 128.19mph in the first round, and followed this in the second round with a WB 'Closest to Dial-in' of 10.796 at 123.13mph, just .004 off! Andrew's third round run was also consistent, with a 10.791 at 122.47mph. He then posted a 10.826 at 122.62mph in the last round and won the event!! The team were also awarded the 'Best Engineered' car by the scrutineers, as well as the 'Best Altered' by the commentary team! A great weekend for the team!! Team B-Sting are now leading the Wild Bunch Series and the Real Steel Series. |
| Big Congratulations to Andrew and the whole team on the win! And to Darren, Tom and Ray and teams for their Top 4 placings. Well done to all the Wild Bunch teams on some more good close racing and a great show. Congratulations to both of those who ran PB's!
It was a pretty good event, where we were pretty lucky with the weather. Many thanks to all the marshals and officials and track crew at Shakey for their hard work as always. We are now really looking forward to the third Wild Bunch Series round, fifth Real Steel Series round and first Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Car Series round of 2012 at the 'Nostalgia Nationals' at Shakey on June 23rd & 24th! Hoping for better weather and a really big field of Wild Bunch for that one!! | |
