Dragstalgia was the seventh event of the WB season. It was the 5th round of the Wild Bunch Series, and Real Steel Series Round 7 and Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series Round 2. There was a field 19 Wild Bunch cars participating: 7 Altereds, 11 Slingshots & 1 Rear-engine dragster

| And of special mention, 'Crazy' Chris and the team were at the event with 'Backdraft'. The parts for their engine rebuild had not yet arrived from the US, so Chris had the car on display in the 'historic car marquee' over the weekend, in classic wheelying stance, of course! The slingshot was between Wild Bunch Honorary Lifetime member Nobby Hills' 'Houndog 1' slingshot and Russ Carpenter's 'Glacier Grenade' dragster, with the 'Money Hungry' Camaro next to them. John Hobbs was also displaying 2 bikes. The marquee was just one of the many special features of the 'Dragstalgia' event. The weather forecast was mixed for Saturday, but pretty good for Sunday, so we hoped to be able to get our Wild Bunch rounds in. Especially as we had another big field of cars! There had been several showers Friday night and Saturday dawned wet, grey and cloudy. It took a while for the clouds to clear, and several teams had flooded pit areas. But the track crew worked hard as usual, and racing began around 4:15pm! And the Wild Bunch were first out on track! Most cars made this round. We had just got the call to go down for another round when a heavy shower fell. But again the track crew worked hard to dry the track and it was open in time for the second ever Santa Pod Cacklefest which included one of the first fireups of the Allard Chrysler dragster! A total of 8 Wild Bunch cars took part in the Cacklefest and it was another great show by the Bunch! Sunday started cool and cloudy, but dry! And it stayed dry all day! The Wild Bunch were able to run all four rounds, so a great result! Over the weekend 4 drivers ran Personal Best ET's and 2 ran PB Speeds. It was a great weekend! | |
| WB 1 | Adam Price was in his sixth event of the season with the Team Gridlock 'Go Hard or Go Home!!!' Topolino altered. He entered the Peak Performance test day on the Friday, and made 5 runs that day, including a competitive matchup with Tom Larman in 'The Ferret', which both teams really enjoyed! Adz ran a low 9-second pass during the WB round on Saturday, and took part in the Cacklefest on the Saturday night. The team dialled in at 9.27 for Sunday's rounds. Wife Lorraine was again performing backup duties and had a special outfit for the occasion, and was awarded Wild Bunch 'Best Backup Girl' by the commentators! Woop woop, Lorraine!! Adam began the rounds well when he recorded a Wild Bunch 'Closest to Dial-in' run in the first round, with a 9.271 at 142.61mph, just one thousandth off! He then posted runs of 9.228 at 143.93mph, 9.298 at 142.10mph and 9.339 at 142.16mph with a Wild Bunch 'Best Reaction' of .058. With this consistency, he won the event! His third win of the season and the team had another great weekend! Adam is now leading the Wild Bunch, Real Steel and the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series! |
| WB 3 | saw Dave Williams in his seventh event of the season with his 'Green with Envy' altered. Dave made a good 11-second pass on the Saturday in the Wild Bunch round session. He and Linda dialled in at 11.60 for the rounds on Sunday. Dave opened his account with an 11.662 at 112.50mph. He then ran closer, with an 11.577 at 113.34mph in the second round. His third round pass was even closer, with an 11.619 at 113.02mph. But he ran even quicker in the last round, posting an 11.439 at 113.92mph. His earlier rounds were real consistent, and Dave finished in 4th place overall for the weekend, his second Top 4 of the season. He is now in 4th place in the Wild Bunch and 3rd place in the Roy Wilding Series. |
| WB 7 | saw the welcome return of Roy Wilding with his blown 'Hemi Hunter' slingshot in his first event for a couple of years with the Wild Bunch. He had a couple of fireups in the pits on Saturday, and cured a few gremlins, so missed the Wild Bunch session Saturday afternoon. He went down shortly after, for the RWYB slot, and performed a smoky burnout. But when he launched for the run, he had to pull over, as he detected a problem. Later investigation in the pits proved that the engine had spun a bearing, so unfortunately Roy was out for the weekend. Best of luck to him for the repair! |
| WB 8 | Mark Coulsell was back in the Limited Funz Racing 'Ballbreaker' slingshot for his seventh event of the year, and the team used Dad Ian's 40's pickup truck as push vehicle all weekend. Mark recorded a 9-second pass in the Saturday Wild Bunch session. Mark and the team also took part in Saturday night's Cacklefest, using the truck to push the slingshot down the old fireup road before joining the rest of the cars on the track, which they all really enjoyed. And it was nice to see Rob and Pete (the Marras) had the old 'Limited Funz' chassis and bodywork on a trailer in the pits, as they start their work to rebuild the car. Mark and the team dialled in at 9.20 on Sunday, and Mark recorded a 9.358 at 144.77mph in the first round. He improved on the second and third rounds, posting a 9.258 at 143.00mph and a 9.204 at 143.38mph. His fourth round was also strong, a 9.249 at 142.62mph. Mark finished in 5th place for the weekend. The Limited Funz team were also thrilled when the commentators awarded them the 'Best Appearing Team' of all the teams at Dragstalgia! |
| WB 9 | Sarah Howells was back in the hotseat of the Team Dog's Bollocks 'RamRaider' slingshot for the team's seventh event this season. Sarah ran a good 9.2-second pass in the WB session Saturday, and was chuffed to take part in the evening's Cacklefest again. She dialled in at 9.20 for Sunday. Sarah posted a 9.307 at 138.97mph in the first round, and then a better 9.224 at 142.08mph in the second round. During maintenance between rounds, the team discovered that they had a minor problem with a small bit of oil seeping from the jacket in the block, so unfortunately were forced to park the car for the rest of the event, to err on the side of caution. They are sure to have the problem fixed by the next event, so best of luck with that. The Dog's Bollocks Team are now 3rd in the Wild Bunch Series and 4th in the Real Steel Series. |
| WB 19 | Wayne Colliver was back out with the Bunch for the first time this season, with his 'Spud' slingshot. The team fired the car up a few times in the pits on Saturday, and towed down for the round, but unfortunately could not make the run. Wayne was able to join in with the Cacklefest on the evening, so the team really enjoyed that. They dialled in at 13.50 for Sunday, but unfortunately had some problems, and could not make the rounds. They are now making plans to put a new engine in the slingshot, so very best of luck to them all and look forward to seeing them again! |
| WB 35 | Dick Sharp was back in the 'Dorset Horn' altered for his fourth event of the season. Dick put in a strong 9.5-second pass in the Saturday WB session. The team dialled in at 9.55 for Sunday's rounds, and Dick opened his account with a 9.718 at 135.45mph. He improved on his second pass, to a 9.659 at 137.32mph. His third and fourth round runs were consistent, as he recorded a 9.681 at 136.09mph and a 9.664 at 136.04mph. Dick finished in 7th place overall, with one of his strongest sets of ET's with the car this season. The team were also chuffed to be awarded the Wild Bunch 'Best Appearing Team' by the commentators, who noted that even their wellies were bright yellow! |
| WB 40 | Darren Law was in his sixth event of the season with the Wild Bunch in 'The Wicked Lady' rear-engined dragster. On the Saturday though, it was again son Sean's turn to run the car, and he recorded another strong 9.4-second pass, and had his MSA competition licence finally signed off fully. Well done, Sean!! On Sunday, Darren and the team dialled in at 9.35 for the rounds. He started well with a 9.325 at 144.30mph in Round 1. His second round run was a 9.442 at 142.93mph and he followed this with a 9.416 at 142.49mph and a 9.396 at 143.38mph in the third and fourth rounds. Darren finished in 2nd place overall for the weekend, his third 2nd place of the season! He is now in 2nd place in the Real Steel Series. |
| WB 41 | saw Tom Larman in his fifth Wild Bunch event this year with 'The Ferret' altered, and his second time at Dragstalgia. Tom entered the Peak Performance test day on the Friday, and made a grand total of 8 runs! Including a match race with Adam Price, which both teams really enjoyed and talked about all weekend! Tom made another strong 10-second pass in the WB round on Saturday, and son Craig drove the car for the Cacklefest, his second time, which the whole team enjoyed. The team dialled in at 10.62 for the rounds on Sunday, and Tom posted a 10.600 at 119.64mph for starters. He then recorded a 10.584 at 119.32mph, a 10.735 at 118.36mph and a 10.699 at 118.57mph in the remaining rounds. He finished in 3rd place overall, his third Top 4 of the season! Tom and the team are now in 2nd place in the Wild Bunch Series, 3rd in the Real Steel Series and 2nd in the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series. |
| WB 62 | Kev Preston was running with the Wild Bunch with his 'Valkyrie' blown altered for the first time this season. He made a couple of passes Saturday, including a PB of 8.47. He also took part in the evening's Cacklefest and really enjoyed this! He dialled in at 8.50 for Sunday, and began well with a new Personal Best E.T. of 8.431 at 153.11mph. Unfortunately, the car had experienced an unexplained dip in oil pressure in the shutdown area, so Kev decided not to run for the rest of the day, to avoid risking damage to the motor. The team were chuffed to be awarded the 'Best Burnout' Spot Prize by the commentators for Kev's strong smoky burnouts. |
| WB 67 | saw Darryl Howells in his sixth event with the Wild Bunch this year in his 'Chemical Reaction' slingshot. Darryl began Saturday with a 10-second pass. He had the car tuned to 'flame mode' for Saturday evening's Cacklefest, and put on a great flame show with the car, with clearly the best flames of all those firing up! Fair shout! On Sunday, Darryl dialled in at 10.26. His first round was a close 10.310 at 127.72mph. But the car ran slower on all the following rounds, with Darryl posting a 10.828 at 120.59mph, an 11.097 at 116.26mph, and a 10.997 at 118.57mph. Darryl finished in 11th place overall for the weekend, and really enjoyed the event. |
| WB 68 | saw Mick Gleadow out with the Wild Bunch for his first event of the season in his 'Jurassic Parts' slingshot (the commentators loved the name, by the way!). Mick had only made shakedown runs with the car before, so was keen to see how it would run. He started Saturday with a checkout pass, but had a problem in the shutdown area when he did not make the turn. The car glanced the fencing, and suffered some minor damage, but thankfully Mick was okay. He parked the car for the rest of the day, and made some repairs overnight. He missed the first round, but dialled in at 11.50. he was really pleased when the car then ran a new Personal Best ET and Speed of 10.456 at 117.16mph in the second round! Fair play. But unfortunately, Mick had a problem after the launch in the third round and had to coast over to the side of the track. The car was towed off, so hopefully everything will be okay and we will see Mick out again running soon. All the best to him and the team! |
| WB 69 | Alan Loten was back out with his 'Paranoia' altered for his third event of the year. He and crew chief Steve had been forced to miss several events, due to a painful Achilles injury which Steve suffered at an earlier event. He had just gotten out of plaster, and was still on crutches with a 'Star Wars' style boot, but he was still keen to crew! And that he did admirably, ensuring the 'chute pin was removed and duly shown to Alan for the usual reassurance! Fair play, Steve! The team had a bit of help from Terry of the 'Dorset Horn' team, Alan's lovely wife, and an old faithful crewman who showed up for the first time in over 25 years in the 'person' of one Norman Hyde! Hee hee! Alan made one pass Saturday. He dialled in at 10.00 even for Sunday. It was his birthday, and he soon received a present, as his first round run netted a new Personal Best E.T. and speed of 9.968 at 133.23mph. His first 9-second pass of his second drag racing career! His next round run was also a new PB ET and Speed of 9.809 at 133.26mph. He did not make the third round, but came back out for the fourth and ran a 10.362 at 124.88mph. Alan and team were really chuffed to be awarded the 'Best Appearing Car' Spot Prize by the commentators, icing on the cake of a great weekend! |
| WB 73 | was the second Wild Bunch event of the season for Mike Couch in his 'Flathead Frenzy 2' slingshot. He made a couple of passes on Saturday. Mike dialled in at 11.60 for Sunday, and was hoping to take part with fellow flathead slingshot driver Bradley Cooper, in some flag start sessions organised in the RWYB time, so missed the first three rounds. He joined in with the Bunch for the fourth round and ran a good 11.659 at 110.45mph. |
| WB 76 | saw Steve Field in his first event at Santa Pod for a few years, and his fifth event of the year with his and Lesley's 'Black Pig Too' slingshot. Steve ran a 9-second pass on Saturday. He and Lesley dialled in at 9.60 for Sunday's rounds, and Steve began well with a 9.537 at 145.27mph in the first round. His next run saw a bit of a squirrely launch, and he had to back off to a 9.977 at 127.59mph. His third round pass was also a bit out of shape, and he posted a 9.866 at 141.59mph. He improved again in the fourth round, running a 9.672 at 143.83mph and was pleased to have run all the four rounds and received some great comments about the car. Steve finished in 8th place overall. There was also a special bonus when he and Lesley were awarded the 'Spirit of Nostalgia' Spot Prize by the commentators for their beautiful period slingshot and the exciting runs! |
| WB 78 | was Keith Crampton's fifth event of the year with the Bunch, with his 'Soultown Shaker' slingshot. Keith ran an 11-second pass on the Saturday, and also took part in the Cacklefest on the Saturday night, having a great time! He dialled in at 11.25 for the rounds on Sunday, and recorded an 11.151 at 116.56mph in the first round. He then posted a close 11.254 at 115.21mph in the second round, though thought the car felt a little strange at the top end. Only about half an hour before the next round, Keith realised that there was a big crack in the hub of one of the front wheels, and some spokes were in danger of coming out. He remembered that Wayne Colliver had a set of spare wheels and a quick deal and even quicker changeover was done in time for the third round, where Keith ran an 11.542 at 114.94mph. His fourth round run was a big improvement as he recorded an 11.168 at 115.34mph. Keith finished in 6th place overall for the event. |
| WB 91 | Bob Hawkins was in his seventh event of the season with the Wild Bunch in his 'Time Traveller' slingshot. He ran a strong 8.3-second pass on the Saturday. On the evening, Bob took part in his first ever 'Flame Burnout'. He had sensibly removed his parachute beforehand! Bob made a spectacular burnout with some great photos to show for it, and thankfully only had a little bit of soot on the rear of the car. Bob dialled in at 8.00 even for the rounds, after turning up the nitrous. In the first round, he recorded an 8.458 at 156.29mph. He then improved to an 8.345 at 164.26mph in the second round. He had a bit of a wayward moment in the third round, and had to back off to a 9.164 at 146.21mph. He then recorded the 'Quickest E.T.' of the weekend for the Bunch, with an 8.320 at 164.96mph, in the fourth round. Bob finished in 9th place overall and had a great weekend! |
| WB 94 | Tom Maunders was in his first 'Dragstalgia' event and the team's fourth of the season with their slingshot. Tom ran an 11.6 pass on the Saturday. Dad Steve dialled him in at 11.45 for the rounds on Sunday, and Tom began with a 12.001 at 101.21mph with a missed shift. He greatly improved in the next round and ran a new Personal Best E.T. of 11.259 at 104.09mph. His third round pass was an 11.556 at 103.49mph, and he recorded an 11.494 at 102.59mph in the fourth. Tom finished in 9th place overall for the weekend and enjoyed running at Santa Pod. |
| WB 194 | saw the second ever Wild Bunch event for Dave Gibbons with his 'Rough Diamond' altered. Dave also ran at the Peak Performance Test Day on the Friday. Dave had last run with the Bunch at last year's Dragstalgia. He ran an 8-second pass on Saturday and later took part in the 'Flame Burnout' demos on the evening, after the Cacklefest, for the second year in a row and was the first to run. Dave dialled in at 8.68 for Sunday's rounds. Due to a problem with a wire shaken loose by the burnout, he slowed to a 10.310 at 129.92mph in the first round. He was right back on course in the second round, posting an 8.707 at 149.60mph run. He then recorded an 8.788 at 147.12mph in the third round and an 8.706 at 149.13mph in the fourth. Dave finished in 10th place overall for the event. |
| Congratulations to Adam and the whole of Team Gridlock, on their third win of the year! This was accompanied by £50 prize money, courtesy of Roy Wilding, for each event winner in his Series. Many thanks to Roy for this kind contribution! And congratulations to Darren, Tom and Dave for their Top 4 placings. And congratulations to all the Wild Bunch teams on another fantastic show! We had a lot of good comments from people throughout the weekend about the Wild Bunch, especially the size of the field and the quality of the cars!
It was a great event, and we hope next year is even better. Many thanks to all the marshals and officials and track crew at Santa Pod for their hard work as always. Much appreciated! We are now really looking forward to the eighth Real Steel Series round of 2012 at the 'Open Sports Nationals' at Shakey on August Bank Holiday on 25th - 27th August! This will be the season finale of the Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series. We should have another really big field for that one!! | |
