The weather forecast was predicted to be wet all day Saturday and mixed Sunday. After an initial downpour at about 10am Saturday, the sun later came out and the track opened for 3 ½ hours on a nice sunny afternoon! Many teams managed to get in 2 or 3 runs throughout the afternoon. On Saturday night, the Wild Bunch had our annual fancy dress party with the theme being uniforms. We had lots of pilots from all eras, a stewardess, a nurse (!), a soldier and some officers, a land army girl and a schoolgirl! It was great fun and a good time was had by all! Sunday dawned dry and sunny, and remained so until 10 to 5 when an absolutely torrential downpour occurred and soaked all of the Wild Bunchers waiting for their third round. At least we got 2 in! Four drivers ran PBs this weekend. | |
WB 3 | was Keith Cramptons fourth event of the year with the Bunch, with his Soul Town Shaker slingshot. Keith made 2 runs Saturday, beginning with a 10.993 at 118.23mph. He followed this with an 11.025 at 117.88mph. Wife Christine was crewing this weekend, as well as two friends who were new to drag racing! The team dialled in at 11.01 for Sundays rounds. Unfortunately in the first round there was a problem on staging and launching and the car stalled, and Keith recorded a pass of 22.888 at 115.40mph. His second was a spot-on 11.005 at 118.12mph, so a real shame the first pass was not representative of this performance. Keith finished in 9th place overall for the event. |
WB 8 | Mark Coulsell was in his first event of the season with the Limited Funz Ballbreaker slingshot. Crew Chief Steve Cassisi had recently finished building the engine, after some cam damage last season, and the team had installed the bird catcher on top! One highlight of the teams weekend was that it was the first time Mark had raced at the same event as son Harley, who was racing a Junior Dragster. Mark began with a checkout pass of 15.623 at 54.59mph. He later ran an improved 11.654 at 106.21mph. The team then dialled in at 8.88 for Sundays rounds, as they hoped the car would start to run quicker. Marks first round pass on Sunday was a 13.765 at 71.55mph. Back in the pits, the team diagnosed problems with the fuel pump, so unfortunately they could not take part in the second round. Hope they can get a new pump soon and be back out with the Bunch! |
WB 17 | saw Scot Durrants second Wild Bunch event of the season in his and Ginas Tiki Munki slingshot coupe. Scottie and Gina had family commitments on the Saturday, so arrived early Sunday and dialled in blind at 12.90. Scot started well, beginning with a new Personal Best ET and Speed of 12.821 at 100.70mph in the first round! His next round run was also another PB at 12.768 at 100.97mph, which is the quickest the car has gone yet. (Ginas PB is the fastest). Scotties improvement in speed this weekend proved to be the Most Improved Speed for the Bunch for the event, with an .069mph betterment. Scot finished in 5th place overall for the event. |
WB 40 | Sean Law was back in The Wicked Lady rear-engined dragster for his second event of the season. He made a total of 3 runs on the Saturday, starting with a 9.310 at 144.81mph, a new Personal Best Speed and best speed for the new car. He followed this with a 9.301 at another PB speed of 144.97mph. His third run was event quicker, as he posted a 9.224 at 144.16mph. The team dialled in at 9.25 on Sunday, and Seans first round run netted a 9.397 at 143.11mph. He then ran much closer, with a 9.244 at another PB speed of 145.11mph. He finished in 4th place overall, another great result for the team. |
WB 69 | Alan Loten was in his third Wild Bunch event of the year, in his Paranoia altered. He made just one run on Saturday, a promising 9.579 at 136.40mph. He and Steve then dialled in at 9.45 for the rounds on Sunday. Alan began very well, with a 9.441 at 139.66mph, one of his closest ever runs to Dial. He then recorded a 9.557 at 140.66mph in the second round. Both he and Steve were over the moon to finish the event in 3rd place, the teams first ever Top 4 result! Congratulations to them! The car was also awarded the Best Altered prize by the commentary team, and the Best Engineered prize by the scrutineers. A great weekend all round! Fair play! |
WB 70 | Alan Smith was in his second event of the year with Mrs Rotherhams Avanti slingshot. (And for those who dont know, the car was formerly driven by her husband John. Mrs Rotherham is now 92 by the way and still the official owner!). Once again Alan was ably crewed by partner Margaret. They arrived on Sunday, and dialled in blind at 11.30 for the rounds. Alans first run was an 11.565 at 116.35mph. But in the second round there was a problem and he slowed to a 16.543 at 53.24mph. It seems there could be a problem with the flexiplate, which Alan will investigate back home. He finished in 8th place overall for the event. |
WB 76 | Steve Field was in his third event of the season with his and Lesleys Black Pig Too slingshot. Steve had replaced the crank since the previous event two weeks before! (The bearings had spun and were something to behold!). The team spent Saturday in the pits testing things out and driving the car slowly down the pits to check it out, and all seemed fine. On Sunday, they dialled in blind at 10.90, to have something to shoot for. Well, the car ran really well on the first pass, recording a 10.194 at 121.29mph, a new Personal Best ET! But there was a problem with a lot of smoke at the top end. Luckily this only turned out to be a problem with oil from a rocker box, and Steve managed to fix this for the next run, thankfully. He then ran another PB, 10.084 at 120.12mph. He will again be tweaking in between events to fine tune a few issues, but the team are headed in a good direction, so fair play to them for all their hard work! Steve finished in 7th place for the event. |
WB 91 | saw the fourth Wild Bunch event of the season for Bob Hawkins in the Time Traveller II slingshot. Bob made 2 passes on the Saturday, and although the team changed a couple of things in between, they were very consistent, a 7.734 at 170.40mph and a 7.720 at 173.70mph. Bob dialled in at 7.65 for Sundays rounds. He made an excellent start, with a Wild Bunch Closest to Dial-in run of 7.653 at 173.52mph in the first round. He later ran a consistent 7.621 at 174.89mph in the second, and won the event! Congratulations to Bob and team! He was also awarded Best Slingshot by the commentators, and earned the Drivers Choice award voted for by all those attending the event. Bob is now leading both the Wild Bunch and Real Steel Series. Fair play! |
WB 101 | Steven East and crewman and son Joshua were in their second Wild Bunch event with the Ellies in Trouble Now slingshot. They arrived on Saturday afternoon, and set up in the pits and got scrutineered, though did not make a pass that day. Steven dialled in blind for the rounds on Sunday, at 10.01. His first round run produced a 10.589 at 131.28mph. He also performed his first full burnout at this event. His second run was much better, as he recorded a 10.141 at 138.66mph. Steven finished in 6th place overall for the event, and the pair thoroughly enjoyed themselves again! |
WB 109 | Andrew Murphy was taking his second turn of the year in the hotseat of the B-Sting altered. He made 3 runs on Saturday, beginning with a new Personal Best ET of 10.029 at 133.36mph. He then ran a 10.110 at 133.48mph and a 10.204 at 132.80mph. The team dialled in midway at 10.10 for Sundays rounds. Andrew started well, with a 10.135 at 134.06mph. And his second round run was a quicker and closer 10.085 at 133.55mph. This earned him 2nd place for the event. Well done! |
Big Congratulations to Bob and the whole team on the win! And to Andrew, Alan and Sean and teams for their Top 4 placings. Well done to all the Wild Bunch teams on some more good close racing and a great show.
It was another really good event, where the weather turned out better than expected. Many thanks to all the marshals and officials and track and fire crews at Shakey for their hard work as always, which enabled lots of racing to take place despite the weather! We are now really looking forward to the third Wild Bunch Series round, fifth Real Steel Series round and first Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Car Series round of 2014 at the Nostalgia Nationals at Shakey on June 21st & 22nd! Hoping for some dry weather and a big field of Wild Bunch for that one!! |
