The weather forecast had been fantastic so everyone was eagerly anticipating the event. There was a fair bit of track time on the Saturday and many Wild Bunchers got in 3 or 4 runs, with one getting in 6! Sunday dawned warm and sunny again, and we hurried to queue up in the lanes to get in early. We got our first round in about 10:30am. We then queued for a second round at about 11:45 but it took until around 1pm to get the run. We then queued for from around 2:30pm and got the third and final round in at about 4pm. Throughout the weekend 7 drivers ran Personal Best E.T.s and 5 ran PB Speeds. And a new Wild Bunch class E.T. and Speed record was set by Bob Hawkins at 7.478 and 192.08mph! Congratulations Bob! And well done to all those who ran PBs!
WB 1 Adam Price was in his 4th event this season in the Team Gridlock Go Hard or Go Home!!! altered. Adam began with Saturday with a 9.174 at 147.39mph pass. He followed this with a 9.153 at 146.75mph. He went quicker on his third run, recording a 9.079 at 147.91mph, and his fourth pass was a 9.148 at 146.85mph. The team then dialled in at 9.14 for Sunday, and Adam began well with a 9.158 at 147.37mph in the first round. He then recorded a 9.118 at 147.83mph in the second, with a Wild Bunch Best Reaction of .028. He went quicker again in the third round, posting a 9.106 at 147.48mph. He finished in 2nd place overall for the weekend. Well done, Adam!
WB 3 was Keith Cramptons 5th event of the year with the Bunch, with his Soul Town Shaker slingshot. Keith arrived early on Sunday morning, and had to dial in blind. This weekend he was assisted by the Tiki Munki crew. He dialled in a 11.01 for the rounds and started well , with an 11.032 at 119.02mph. He followed this with an 11.065 at 116.51mph in the second round. He then recorded a new Personal Best ET of 10.909 at 120.49mph, near his best speed, in the third round. Keith was chuffed to finish in 3rd place overall for the event. He was also awarded the Best Slingshot Spot Prize by the commentators. Fair play, Keith!
WB 4 Scot Durrant was in the hotseat for his 3rd event of the season in the Tiki Munki slingshot coupe. He made 3 runs on Saturday, starting with a 12.882 at 96.89mph and improving to a 12.815 at 98.57mph. He improved again to a 12.790 at 99.23mph. Scottie dialled in at 12.80 on Sunday morning. His first run was a promising 12.825 at 99.13mph. In the second round, he recorded a 12.834 at 99.60mph. And then in the third round, he posted a new Personal Best ET and Speed of 12.676 at 101.23mph! Great stuff! Scottie finished in 4th place overall for the event.
WB 6 Crazy Chris Hartnell and team were in their 2nd event of the season with the Backdraft slingshot. Chris made a total of three passes on Saturday, and they were very consistent: 8.872 at 149.38mph, 8.853 at 149.40mph and 8.826 at 150.15mph. Claire had several new backup girl outfits for the event and took advantage of the warm weather! On Sunday morning, the team dialled in at 8.84 for the rounds. On Chris first run, he posted an 8.967 at 147.47mph. He then ran really close to Dial-in with an 8.833 at 149.79mph in the second round. Then in the third round he recorded a fantastic 8.763 at 151.01mph, one of his best speeds. Chris finished in 5th place for the event.
WB 8 Mark Coulsell was back in the Limited Funz Ballbreaker slingshot, after acquiring another fuel pump. He began Saturday with a checkout pass of 10.127 at 128.79mph. Back in the pits there was some more tuning, and this produced a very promising 9.717 at 136.73mph. The team dialled in at 9.00 even for the rounds on Sunday. There was some confusion on the startline regarding pairings, and Mark ended up redlighting and not recording a time. In his second round run, he posted an improved 9.579 at 135.40mph, which the team were pretty happy with. But there was a problem on the third burnout, and Mark could not make the pass. This later turned out to be a broken dizzy cap, though there was another problem too, which the team suspected may be the torque converter. So hopefully the team can fix this, get another converter and be back for Dragstalgia!
WB 35 saw Dick Sharp back with the Bunch in the Dorset Horn altered for his first event of the year! He had recently installed a new cam in the Pontiac motor and was keen to see how this would run. Dick made 2 runs on Saturday, beginning with a 9.673 at 147.49mph, a new Personal Best Speed! He then followed this with a new Personal Best ET, an excellent 9.077 at 148.32mph, another PB Speed! Dick and the team dialled in at 9.00 for Sundays rounds! Dicks first pass was a 9.258 at another Best Speed of 149.95mph, oh so near that magic 150! His second round pass was a better 9.102 at 147.32mph. He later recorded a 9.427 at 144.60mph on his third round run. This was a very special race as it saw the first time that Dick and son Dan, in the Little Big Horn altered, raced together. A great moment and nice to finally see this matchup! Dick finished in 8th place overall.
WB 39 saw the Wild Bunch debut of Jason Cull and Martin White in the Perfect Pete slingshot. They shared driving duties for the weekend. Saturdays first run saw a new Personal Best E.T. for Jason, an 11.859 at 105.56mph. A later run was an 11.946 at 106.41mph. The team dialled in at 12.00 even for Sundays rounds. They recorded passes of 12.375 at a new Best Speed of 108.36mph, 12.240 at 107.07mph & 12.030 at 108.51mph. The team finished in 7th place. Welcome!!
WB 45 Phil James was in his 4th event with the Wild Bunch this year. He made passes of 9.549 at 139.43mph and 9.455 at 138.93mph, though there was a problem with the brakes. The team hoped to cure this, and dialled in at 9.45 for the rounds on Sunday. Phil began with a promising 9.427 at 138.56mph, and followed this with a 9.732 at 128.95mph in the second round. Unfortunately, the brake problem became worse and Phil was unable to take further part in the event, so hope the team can remedy this for the next event.
WB 69 Alan Loten was in his 4th Wild Bunch event of the season in his Paranoia altered. The team had some bad luck the week before and were delayed arriving at the event, so had to dial in blind on Sunday. They opted for a 9.45. Alans first run was a 9.750 at 135.09mph. In the second round, he recorded a slowing 10.558 at 120.88mph, with a shifting problem. There was another problem in the third round and Alan posted a 10.651 at 123.13mph. Later investigation revealed a blown gasket, and problems with the o-rings, so hope this can be rectified for the next event. Alan finished in 10th place overall for the weekend.
WB 70 Alan Smith was back in the Avanti slingshot, after fixing the problems experienced at the last event. There was cause for celebration too, as Alan and Margaret had gotten married the weekend before, after 26 years together. Huge congratulations to them both! They arrived on the Sunday and dialled in blind, at 11.40. Alans first run netted a 12.205 at 92.39mph. In the second round, he posted a 12.360 at 106.78mph. And in the third, he slowed to a 13.339 at 90.41mph, suspecting a problem with the flywheel. So hope he can fix this and be back out for Dragstalgia! Alan finished in 11th place overall.
WB 73 Mike Couch was in his second event with the Wild Bunch this year in his Flat Frenzy slingshot. He made 3 runs on the Saturday of 10.141 at 135.03mph, an improved 9.889 at 136.74mph and a 10.324 at 114.06mph. He dialled in at 9.85 for Sunday. His first round run was a 10.152 at 133.14mph. He followed this with a gasket-blowing 10.198 at 118.12mph in the second round. Sadly that was it for the event for him, and he has since discovered more damage in the faithful flathead, so a replacement engine is on the cards. Best of luck to Mike with this!
WB 76 Steve Field had installed a new carb on the Black Pig Too since the last event, and made some other modifications to the setup on the slingshot. The team spent Saturday testing this and firing up the car, but some other problems developed. And sadly they could not take any further part in the event. Best of luck to Steve, Lesley and the whole team for curing this ready for Dragstalgia!
WB 91 Bob Hawkins was in his 5th event of the season with the Wild Bunch in his Time Traveller II slingshot. He had done some tuning since the last event, and started Saturday off with a great 7.526 at a massive new Personal Best Speed of 192.08mph! This was the new Wild Bunch class speed record he had been hoping for! Congratulations to Bob and the whole team on this achievement! He followed this with a new Personal Best E.T. and another new Wild Bunch class ET record of 7.478 at 164.92mph (the speed of which may have been erroneous). This run also earnt him a trophy from the NSRA for Quickest Wild Bunch Car of the event. However, Bob had problems that day with a dropped valve, and thanks to the loan of tools and teamwork, the team sorted this out. Bob dialled in at 7.50 for Sunday, but unfortunately did not make the first round when a minor problem was found. The team rectified this and Bob came back out in the second round, posting a 7.552 at 185.79mph. He then recorded an off-pace 8.731 at 151.10mph in the third round, with unfortunately another dropped valve. More damage was later found including a scored bore, so best of luck to Bob and team for repairing this for the following event! Bob was chuffed to be awarded the Best Burnout Spot Prize for his long smoky burnouts.
WB 109 Andrew Murphy was back in the hotseat of the B-Sting altered for his third event of the season, and raring to go. He put in 4 exceptionally consistent runs on Saturday, of 10.134 at 132.79mph, 10.119 at 132.75mph, 10.118 at 132.28mph and 10.122 at 132.73mph. The team therefore decided on a Dial-in of 10.11 for Sunday! Andrew began very well with a 10.112 at 132.67mph. And going one better on the second round, he recorded a Wild Bunch Closest to Dial-in of 10.111 at 132.92mph! He followed this with a slightly quicker 10.091 at 133.63mph. With this consistency, just .007 off Dial on average, he won the event! Congratulations, Andrew! The team were also awarded the Best Appearing Team prize by the commentators. Well done to all!
WB 111 Dan Sharp was on his second Wild Bunch event of the year in the teams Little Big Horn altered. There were a few more teething problems on the Saturday, and Dan did not make a run. The team dialled in blind for Sunday, with an 11.50. Due to a minor steering breakage, Dan did not make the first round, but bounced back well in the second with a new Personal Best E.T. of 11.627 at 105.19mph! He followed this by another PB E.T. of 10.920 at 105.13mph! This earnt him the Most Improved ET award, with a 1.436-second improvement over his previous Best ET. Well done, Dan! The icing on the cake for the weekend was that he finally got to run against Dad Dick in the Dorset Horn altered! This has been a long time coming and was great to see!
WB 112 saw Matt Fuller making his Wild Bunch debut with the Oblivion funny car. Matt made three runs on Saturday, beginning with a checkout 14.399 at 63.29mph, running in new parts. He improved on the next run to a 13.638 at 94.07mph. And his third pass saw a new Personal Best E.T. of 11.903 at 86.90mph! He dialled in at 12.00 even for the rounds on Sunday. Matt finished in 9th place overall for the event. Welcome to Matt and the whole team!
