Qualifying - Saturday
This was a qualifying day and there were scheduled to be 3 qualifiers, and we were 4th on the running order, so out nice and early. The forecast had not been good for this day, so we were pleasantly surprised when the morning began dry. Our first qualifier was held around 10:30am, so one was in the bank early on. All 6 teams had safely qualified. Another hour later there was some rain, which persisted for an hour or so. The track crew worked very hard to dry the track, repeatedly, and thanks to their efforts, it re-opened at around 5pm. We waited and were again surprised that the second cycle of qualifying began. Our second round then took place at 7:25pm! Two teams ran Personal Best E.T.s and one a PB Speed.
WB 3 Keith Crampton was in his sixth Wild Bunch event of the season with the “Soul Town Shaker” slingshot. Keiths brother was his sole crewman for the weekend, and is credited with getting Keith interested in drag racing in the 70s! Keith dialled in at 11.02 for starters, and posted an 11.179 at 115.07mph to open his account. In the second qualifier, he raised the Dial-in to 11.09 and broke out with a quicker 11.014 at 117.30mph. Keith qualified in 4th place.
WB 4 Scot Durrant was running in his 4th event of the year in the teams “Tiki Munki” slingshot coupe. Scottie dialled in at 12.67 for the first round, and recorded a 12.830 at 99.42mph. He then raised the Dial-in slightly for the next round, to 12.76, and posted a closer 12.813 at 94.26mph. He qualified in 3rd place overall. The team were awarded the “Best Appearing Team” Spot Prize by the commentators. So well done to them!
WB 25 Terry Clifford was back for his third event of the season, after repairing rocker shaft damage in the “Ratcatcher Resurrection” slingshot. His first Dial-in was a conservative 9.96. Terry and the team were then pleasantly surprised when he ran a big breakout of 9.311 at 148.15mph! The team checked the car over between rounds and there was no repeat of the previous problems, so the Dial-in was duly lowered to at 9.23. Terry improved again, posting a 9.265 at 149.65mph, and finished in 2nd place overall in qualifying. Fair play!
WB 40 Sean Law had been running well with “The Wicked Lady” rear-engine dragster since the new car debuted and the team started with a Dial-in of 9.28. Sean then broke out slightly on this, running a 9.270 at a new Personal Best Speed of 145.26mph in the first qualifier. This was with a Wild Bunch “Best Reaction” of .114. The team lowered the Dial slightly to 9.25, and Sean then recorded another breakout, a new Personal Best E.T. of 9.201 at 144.88mph. Well done! Sean qualified 6th.
WB 76 Sarah Howells was having her first drive in Steve and Lesley Fields “Black Pig Too” slingshot. She dialled in at 11.19 for the first round. There was a fair bit of smoke on the run and Sarah recorded a 14.648 at 67.22mph. Back in the pits Steve diagnosed a problem with the lash caps, so sadly Sarah could not make another run. Steve is sure to have this cured for the next event, so good luck to the team on the repairs. The car won the “Best Appearing Car” Spot prize chosen by the commentators, who remarked that it was a stunning-looking car.
WB 91 Bob Hawkins was in his sixth Wild Bunch event of the season with his “Time Traveller II” slingshot. Bob and the team had put another tune-up in the car, hoping for even better performance. Tom set the Dial-in for the first round at 7.43, and Bob promptly ran another Personal Best E.T. of 7.449 at 179.97mph. This was also another Wild Bunch class E.T. record! The team kept the Dial-in for the second qualifier, and Bob smashed this with another PB E.T. and record of 7.347 at 178.55mph! Congratulations, Bob and team! He also qualified in 1st place overall for the weekend!
Race Day Sunday (Eliminations)
Sundays forecast was better and everyone was hopeful. The officials ran the whole of the rest of the second cycle of qualifying, and had only just began on the first few pairs of eliminations in the first class, when it started to rain. It was not heavy, though it was persistent. The track crew dried the track, and it rained again. They dried it again, and eventually racing re-started at around 2:30pm. A few classes got through until it rained again, not long after 3pm. After another big effort by the super track crew, racing began again at 4:30pm with the plan of getting every class through their first rounds. Sadly, this did not get very far as it rained again at 5pm and the officials were forced to call time on the event! Such a shame! Thanks to the crew for trying so hard!

Quarter-Finals
All 6 Wild Bunch cars had qualified for eliminations, with Keith due to face Bob, Scottie matched with Sean and Terry paired with Sarah, and unfortunately though the teams waited all day, it was not to be.

The results mean that Bob Hawkins is still leading the Real Steel Series, Keith Crampton is in 2nd place, Adam Price in 3rd and Andrew Murphy rounds off the Top 4. Keith leads the Springbridge MSA Challenge Series, with Adam in 2nd place, Bob in 3rd and Phil James in 4th place.

It was such a shame that the weather shortened what would have been a great event, though at least a couple of qualifiers were had. Many thanks to all the track crews, marshals and officials at Santa Pod for all their constant hard work! A great effort!

We are now really looking forward to the fourth Wild Bunch Series round, seventh Real Steel Series round and second Roy Wilding Nostalgia Race Cars Series round of 2014, at the fourth annual “Dragstalgia” event at Santa Pod on 12th & 13th July! We have over 35 Wild Bunch teams entered for that one already!! Cant wait!!
