(The winner has to back up the speed during the year within 5%, which he did with a 164.49 mph, at the same event!). (Son Tom ran a 166.62 mph, and Alec later went on to improve to a 166.80 mph at the Halloween Showdown!)
Quickest E.T.
Alec Coe, WB 34, "Shy Talker" Slingshot
Alec ran an impressive 8.528 at the Allstar Nationals in August. (The winner has to back up the time during the year within 5%, which Alec did with an 8.533 at the Fall Nationals!). (Son Tom recorded an 8.441 and later in the year, Alec recorded a fantastic 8.208 at the Flame and Thunder at Santa Pod!)
Fastest time by a British-engined dragster
Sid Slattery, WB 147, "Destiny" Slingshot
This is a trophy awarded by Team Paranoia. The criteria is that the winner must have participated in at least 5 Wild Bunch banner events, must run a British engine, and must back their time up within 5%. This year’s winner is Sid Slattery, who ran a 10.604 in his "Destiny" slingshot at the Hot Rod Drags in September, which he backed up with a 10.772 at the same event.
Big Bang Trophy
Darryl Howells, WB 67, "Chemical Reaction" Slingshot
Darryl re-debuted his beautiful ‘Chemical Reaction’ slingshot at the Mini Nationals last year, complete with brilliant paintjob and airbrushed mural. He made steady progress throughout last season and looked forward to a year of good racing, but on the very first pass this year, a rod let go and completely and utterly decimated the engine, leaving large holes in the block and sump! But Darryl came back with a new engine at the Mini Nationals this season and has gone from strength to strength since, lowering his PB to a 10.028!! Fair play, Darryl!
Best Newcomer
Phil Sweeney, WB 54, "Antisocial"
Phil is a very eager young driver and has come to Drag Racing via other motorsports. He participated in 6 events this year, and has really got to grips with driving the slingshot and learning the sport. He ran a Personal Best E.T. of 13.059 @ 100.38 mph at the Allstars and went on to win this, the very first MSA event he entered, winning 3 Spot Prizes along the way, including "Closest to Dial-in" (running exactly on his index). He later won his 2nd MSA event, at Santa Pod, showing his keen competitive ability. He finished 5th in the Wild Bunch Series in his first year of competition, and shows even greater promise for next season! Phil is keen, determined and a great asset to the Wild Bunch!
Best Altered
Helen & Dean Smythe, WB 38, "Hell’s Belle"
‘Hell’s Belle’ is a very nicely-presented, safe and well-engineered car. The team developed the car’s potential this season and lowered the E.T. to an amazing PB of 9.472 at Santa Pod. They also won numerous Spot Prizes including "Best Altered" and several "Best Appearing Team" awards during the season, and finished in 3rd place in the Wild Bunch Series.
Best Radical/Rear-engine dragster
Dr Tony Wynne-Jones, WB 29, "Welsh Raider II"
The ‘Welsh Raider II’ has really improved on performance throughout the year, and Tony ran his first 10-second pass, a PB of 10.911 at Santa Pod, where he was Runner-Up. The car is always immaculate in appearance and presentation, and won no less than fou "Best Radical/ Dragster" Spot Prizes this season, on the way to yet another Top 10 Wild Bunch finish.
Best Slingshot
Mad R’s, WB 34, "Shy Talker"
‘Shy Talker’ has won Spot Prizes including two "Best Slingshot" and a "Best Engineered" award. This brand new blown alcohol slingshot is absolutely immaculate and looks superb on the track, running mid to low 8’s. The team always try to improve performance, running a PB this season of 8.208 @ 166 mph, and are the Quickest and Fastest in the Bunch this year!
Best Turned Out
TEAM TWISTED, WB 38, "Hell’s Belle"
In this team everything is matching and there is great attention to detail in the appearance of their team as a professional package. They have really improved the performance of the car this season, racing at 11 events at Shakey, Santa Pod and York, and winning several Spot Prizes, including two "Best Altered" trophies and five "Best Appearing Team" awards. They are very smart in their purple team shirts, fleeces and caps, and have attended several static shows throughout the year, promoting Drag Racing, the Wild Bunch and their lovely altered. Helen, Dean, Christine and Dave are great ambassadors for the Wild Bunch.
Perseverance Award
Dr Tony Wynne-Jones, WB 29, "Welsh Raider II"
Tony faced teething problems throughout the season, including lengthy waits for parts for his new bigger engine, but remained philosophical and kept plugging away through misfires and other gremlins, and just kept trying until his car’s performance was once again improving, still helping other people along the way! Throughout the season he maintained a beautifully turned-out car, which won several Spot Prizes including four "Best Radical" awards. For all his efforts Tony Wynne-Jones was rewarded with his first ever 10-second pass!
Best Achiever
Mark Hartnell, WB 16, "Awesome 4–Some"
This young driver has worked hard all year, on a limited budget to try to achieve the most he could out of his car. He had a Top 4 placing at one event and won several Spot Prizes, including a "Driver’s Choice" and two "Best Slingshot" awards. He had several breakages throughout the year, including 3 gearboxes! Despite the experts available in the family, he did most of the rebuilding himself, and kept coming back and trying new parts, and learning his car and its tuning. This resulted in his first 12-second pass, a PB 12.927 at over 101 mph at the very last event in October. Great achievements for a 17-year old apprentice mechanic!
Daddy Cool (Sags) Personal Achievement
SNS Racing, WB 147, "Destiny"
At the beginning of this year, the team lost a very dear friend, former Wild Bunch racer Ian Roddy. This was a devastating blow, and although the loss had hit them hard, they managed to pick themselves up and carry on racing, in tribute to their friend. The team persevered through breakages and personal difficulties, and it is a great credit to the whole team that Sid has lowered his PB to a 10.6 and finished in 6th Place in the Wild Bunch Series in the always beautiful "Destiny" slingshot. We all remember Ian’s easy-going nature and his spirit of goodwill and friendliness and that he was always willing to help those around him. SNS Racing have carried on in this same spirit, and this is a true Personal Achievement.
C & C Sportsperson
Bernie Nicholas, WB 44, "Destiny’s Angel"
Bernie epitomises the spirit of sportsmanship and good humour and has been eager to help and support the rest of the Wild Bunch all year long. He is always keen and friendly, and a great ambassador for the spirit of the Wild Bunch, always showing fair play and sportsmanlike conduct to fellow racers. He is at the same time mild-mannered, serious, dedicated and professional, whilst always encouraging everyone else and congratulating them on their achievements. Bernie Nicholas is a true gentleman!
Derek & Brenda Annable trophy
Gerald & Jerry Cookson
This year the 2004 winners Wayne & Janet Schreier have chosen Gerald and Jerry for their combined efforts over a total of many decades: one as a racer and enthusiast, and one as a commentator and media reporter. Behind the scenes, they have both promoted Drag Racing in various ways and are a dedicated family team.
DON GARLITS ‘SPIRIT OF DRAG RACING’ SHIELD
Alec, Kev, Tom, Rita, Jan and Jenny ...... Team Mad R’s with the "Shy Talker"
This year’s winners are very much a team concern and have been keen members of the Wild Bunch for several years. They travel some distance to get to the tracks and run both MSA and RWYB events, consistently fielding an excellently-presented professional-looking car, and keeping the spirit of the Wild Bunch nostalgia theme alive. They are keenly competitive, whilst at the same time being sporting to other racers, always applauding their successes. The car and team have won the "Best Slingshot" award 3 times this year, as well as "Best Engineered" showing their high standard of presentation. They have a great team camaraderie no matter who is driving, and every member of the team is vital in a supporting role. They showed determination by attending every event they could, overcoming some very tough personal circumstances and making some sacrifices along the way for family reasons. The team have very much shown their commitment to the Wild Bunch this season and are great ambassadors promoting the class wherever they could. They are always keen to put on a good showing and run the car to the best of their ability and seek to raise the profile of the Wild Bunch whenever possible. They have begun to develop the full potential of the car, and both drivers in the team ran Personal Best E.T.’s this season, both reaching the goal of 8-second passes over 160 mph, winning the "Quickest E.T. and "Fastest MPH" season trophies along the way and achieving success with the car, running it down to an E.T. of 8.208. This enthusiastic team are great family members of the Wild Bunch!
