Mild steel is good down to 7.50 if built to the correct specs. Probably best to talk to someone like Roy Wilding if you need plans that would be "legal". The mild steel for your cage has to be specific sizes on specific bars, and from memory has to have a 3mm wall thickness. I think Roy told us that he would recommend 10 Guage CDS from Wheeler tubing. |

The building plans are from Mark Williams(usa)so it should be good I think if you use the wall measerments what`s on the drawing it should be ok and on some points something bigger (sorry for my englisch) Is there anyone who is building a fed out of mild steel? |

We built ours about 5 years ago - its mild steel using Mark Williams plans from Roy Wilding, built from 10 guage CDS. Id check the rule book as well as the Mark Williams plans, that was what Roy recommended to us. |

Did you made modifications on the chassis according to the drawing? What engine are you driving with? |

Hi Willys Roy Wilding built a 168" wheel base FED chassis for me last November/December. It is in mild steel, it is/will be tagged for 7.5 seconds when I have finnished fitting it out (hopefully by March '12). It was from the Mark Wiliams plans, but modified by Roy and checked against the SFI regs. As I said it has it's first stage of tagging for 7.5 seconds and when complete will get it's final inspection and tag. I will be running a small block chevy and power glide. I hope that is of some help. Best regards Mike

Hi Around the roll cage area the modifications are, the chassis bottom tube Kicks up 5" to the rear starting directly where the rear axel mounting joins the bottom tube, the axel is moved forward slightly (about 1.5") from where the drawing had it to allow for my long-ish upper leg (knee to thigh) and shortish calf The chassis is 25" wide (outside of tube to outside of tube) to allow for my generously proportioned backside. The motorplate is (I think) set forward a little over the drawings again to get the mass centre forward a bit. Further forward (in front of the motorplate) the chassis tubes run parralel to about 2' infront of the plate to give me room for the dry sump pump my engine will have (which should allow me to fit a bigblock should I wish to in the future) and the top tubes run more parralel to the bottom tubes than the drawing shows ending in a sharp turn down to meet the bottom tube just before the torsion tube for the ftont suspension. It makes the whole front section of the car deeper (going from about 8" at the motorplate to about 5.5" about a foot back from the front axel. Nothing major really mostly fitting the chassis to me and the drivetrain, and to some ideas I had about how I want the finished car to look. Best regards Mike
